Why do I care whether or not you wear Nike, Vans, Adidas, or the like? When it comes to footwear, you could do worse (ahem, stilettos). But there are still some valid reasons to consider swapping your big brand sneakers for a barefoot alternative. Barefoot sneakers have the following:

• Foot Shape: Mainstream sneakers more closely resemble a shank than a human foot, and evidence increasingly shows that footwear can cause bunions and many other foot deformities.
• Flexibility: Barefoot sneakers are significantly more flexible than most, making them movement and balance friendly.
• Zero Drop: Most sneakers seem flat, but actually have a small heel lift which can affect your alignment and posture. Over time, that small heel can contribute to foot, ankle, knee, back, even neck pain.

The Best Barefoot Sneakers

1. Koel Ila

The Koel Ila and Ilo (men’s version) is my current all time favorite sneaker. They have an excellent fit that leaves room for your toes without being floppy or slidey through the heel and midfoot.

They also have just a touch more cushion and thickness than most barefoot sneakers, which I really enjoy – IMO it makes for a more versatile shoe. I can wear them for miles of walking on concrete, but still enjoy the flexibility and movement they offer.

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Wide to extra wide fit – these are wide, but not extra extra wide.
• Medium volume – Might feel snug on high volume feet, but laces can be opened up for more space.

These have a really universal fit that should work for most foot shapes and volumes. But if you are really wide or high volume, they may not fit. If you want a softer feel out of the box, go for the suede.

What I Love About Them: The Shapen Rewind is a special kind of sneaker that fits both extra wide feet and slimmer, lower volume feet. They are very soft, light, and flexible and cinch up on most foot types. A removable insole makes them more adaptable as well. They are also so cute, and I find I am always reaching for the joyful pop of color.

They’ve been super popular at Anya’s Shop for the last couple of years, because no break-in time is needed! And they fit Samantha’s extra wide feet too. They’re also good for people who need extra vertical space so their toenails don’t rub the top of the shoe.

Shapen has a number of other sneaker styles, but I’ve found them to be stiffer and less comfortable. Especially on my lower volume feet, the stiffer material on creases and I didn’t like the way it felt. So I stick with Re:wind!

• Runs slightly big, but I don’t size down.
• Extra wide – but they work well on regular width feet too.
• Medium to High volume & roomy – I am able to cinch them over my low volume feet, and they fit me best with the removable insole that comes with them.

I wear my usual size 37, but have more space in them than I do in many other sneaker brands.

What I Love About Them: Bohempia barefoot sneakers fulfill that classic look so well. They’re all sustainably made with hemp, and they’re one of the only brands to offer a regular and wide width. The sole looks thick, but the rubber wall comes up much higher than the sole so you still are close to the ground.

What I Love About Them: Splay shoes are a great entry point for those new to barefoot shoes because they have a classic American look and a wide toe box, but aren’t super thin (though the sole is much thinner than it appears to be). They also come with a removable insole for more versatility.

They also offer several more affordable options, which is greatly appreciated. And for the price they offer good value. This brand also has a specialized skate line (the Rev series)with extra durable outsoles and uppers, and a slightly wider toe box than their other models.

And if you want a more cushioned option, the Runner V1 has a standard thickness to its sole while still being flat and spacious.

• Runs slightly small in women’s sizes for most models, so I size up to a 7 (6.5 is my usual size). Rev-S series does not run small and is roomier.

What I Love About Them: Be Lenka is another brand that makes very high quality barefoot sneakers – they combine the best shoe making techniques, great style, AND the features of barefoot shoes all in one. They are more classic in style, and not quite as immediately soft as Koel Ila or Shapen Re:Wind. But I love them, and so do our Anya’s Shop customers.

The Barebarics Zing is a perennial favorite with a durable, urban outsole and classic styling. They are heavier and more robust than the other options presented here, but for someone who doesn’t want full barefoot but does want all the toe space it’s a great choice.

What I Love About Them: True to their name, these are extra WIDE sneakers! Despite the chunky looking outsole, it’s actually only 10mm thick and decently flexible for that stack height. These are great if you have really wide feet and also want a little cushion.

These have been really popular among my readers, because there are lots of people who need all the space and some cushion. But truthfully, they don’t fit my foot type well (too low volume and narrow in the heels). Samantha has tested them for us and is modeling them in the pictures above.

What I Love About Them: Peerko sneakers have a really nice fit with a mainstream look, but they are still very flexible. They have more of a barefoot feel than Barebarics, for example, so are great for someone who want that flexibility in a classic looking sneaker.

I also have found that they hold up well to wear, and still look sleek even after being broken in.

8. Mukishoes

What I Love About Them: Mukishoes barefoot sneakers are next level light and flexible. They are very minimal, with thin and soft soles that bend in all directions, so you get a real barefoot experience in them. But they still look stylish, and they always have unique colors and prints each season. My personal favorite line is Lyra (above right). They are supremely soft and feel more generous in the toes than their others.

Another thing I love about Mukishoes is that they care deeply about choosing sustainable materials and manufacturing processes. As I’ve gotten to know the founders over the years, I’ve been so impressed with how they stayed true to those original ideals even when it is more difficult.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• Runs slightly small – I often wear a size 38 in Mukishoes sneakers, because they fit a little snugger than other brands. In Lyra I wear a 37.
• Average width – but the natural materials stretch well so can accommodate wider feet too. The outsole is so flexible it spreads out underfoot.
• High volume, so I almost always use an extra insole with them (sold separately).

9. Whitin

What I Love About Them: Whitin casual sneakers have a classic mainstream look but are significantly cheaper than most other stylish barefoot sneakers. They are definitely more cheaply made, which can sometimes be bothersome (they have some seams that rub if I wear them without socks) but overall they are a solid shoe option. And I like that they have some barefoot and some cushioned option with the wide toe box. You can find the Whitin Wide Toe Box (but not barefoot) options here.

In fact, I often recommend these to people who want to try out the concept of a wide toe box shoe but really don’t know where to start. Whitin sneakers are good for figuring out what you like and whether you want to try out higher quality brands. They’re also excellent for fast-growing teens. My son’s feet have been growing constantly the last 6 months, so it’s saved me some money to go with a cheaper option.

A couple notes re: barefoot features – Whitin sneakers have a little bit of toe spring on some models that feels a little bothersome to me if I wear them a long time. It’s not a huge concern for me, but if you have a history of plantar fasciitis I personally would avoid this.

10. Groundies – Extra Wide Friendly

What I Love About Them: Groundies Barefoot sneakers are some of the most stylish around, and there are a dizzying amount of options and styles! The quality is excellent, and if you go with the original rubber GO1 outsoles they are very flexible and comfortable. The nova is my personal favorite, and it comes in extra wide. The Panama is also really cute, but only comes in one width.

Also, this is a brand that offers two widths. Just be aware that Groundies sells a line they call “Barefoot Lite” which is not foot-shaped. I only recommend Barefoot and Barefoot+ sneakers from Groundies.

• True to size
• Medium width – these are on the slimmer side for barefoot shoes, and really only just wide enough for me. I prefer the fit of the GO1 sole, as it feels roomier.
• Medium to high volume – GO1 sneakers fit more medium to low volume, GS1 sneakers are high volume.

And Groundies Barefoot+ sizing:

• Runs slightly big
• Extra wide fit
• Medium to high volume.

Barefoot+ is overall bigger and roomier, but still can cinch down to fit lower volume feet.

What I Love About Them: Ohne Project sneakers have a high-end, fashion-forward look and feel. They offer some really fun, bright colors and accents, so if you’ve been searching tirelessly for the right sneaker to perfectly pair with that hard-to-match outfit, you might find what you’ve been looking for at Ohne. All their products are vegan and earth friendly, using plant based material for their vegan leather (it’s not plasticky and feels really nice!).

12. Lems Shoes – Extra Wide Friendly

What I Love About Them: Justin and I love our Lems sneakers. I wear the Laguna slip-ons (above right) several times a week and have for the last few years. The heel is collapsible, so I keep them by the back door and am always slipping them on for a quick errand or to take the kids to school. Justin loves the Chillum, and we have introduced many of our friends to barefoot shoes through the unparalleled comfort of the Primal Zen Suede sneakers (above left, these are Lems widest model).

Lems sneakers are unique because they have a thicker sole than most barefoot shoes, but are still very lightweight and flexible. This makes them an excellent choice for people who are not comfortable in thin soles but want all the other benefits of barefoot shoes. I love to rotate in the extra cushion for long walks on the pavement.

• Runs small – I typically order a half size up from my usual.
• Wide to extra wide – Lems Shoes come in multiple fits. Wide is wide (ha) and Widest is extra wide approved. I wear both, but hands down the Widest models are the comfiest.
• Medium volume – Lems sneakers are a little closer fitting than their boots, and keep my heel and ankle secure. But they are still quite roomy if you need vertical toe space or have high arches!

13. Xero Shoes

What I Love About Them: The Xero makes a few casual sneakers that I dig, such as the Dillon (slip-on and lace up) and the Wynn. They are flexible, low profile, and easy to wear. Solid kicks IMO!

If you are someone who wants the toe space, but finds that many barefoot shoes are massive and floppy on you – these are good options to look at. They are fitted through the heel and midfoot, and have a slimmer fit overall.

• Medium width – good for average feet, but not an extra wide toe box
• Medium volume – historically Xero has been very high volume, but their recent casual sneaker line has a closer fit that I think is much better.

What I Love About Them: Dolfie Paradise sneakers were a runaway hit in 2025. The two pairs you see above quickly became among my most worn. What I Love About Them: Vivobarefoot sneakers are consistently well made and durable. My personal favorite is the Primus Lite, because it’s sleek and classic. One con to Vivo sneakers is that they tend to make my feet sweat. The upside is that they last a long time despite being thin and flexible. They also are so thin that I don’t like wearing stomping around on pavement. But if you’re a barefoot purist, there some of the best out there.

• Average to slim width – Vivo sneakers have a narrower fit than most other barefoot brands. They are also sloped shape, so even though they are slim they provide a lot of big toe space (just not a ton of outer toe space, for people with squarer feet).

Men’s and Women’s models are different widths, so if you fit into men’s sizes and have a wider foot that is a great way to go.

What Are Barefoot Kids Shoes?

“Barefoot” shoes are so-called because they let your feet move as if barefoot. Most shoes, even kids shoes, inhibit foot function with stiff soles, cramped toe-boxes, and heels that push your body into an unnatural position.

By contrast, barefoot kids shoes let their feet move naturally! This is especially important while their bodies are growing and developing. And don’t worry if your child has flat feet – this is normal and usually corrects itself over time if they continue using their foot muscles!

As a general rule, kids barefoot shoes are:

1. Foot shaped, with a wide toe box (won’t squish their toes)
2. Zero drop, or completely flat (for natural alignment)

The winter models are made with wool and are surprisingly warm for how light and thin they are (get an additional felt insole for max warmth).

But there are limits to the water resistance – they will get soaked if you stay in water long enough and then can be difficult to dry (I swear by my vent dryer!). And if used for rough play the sole can start to come undone and develop holes in the fabric upper over time – but they last much long than you would think for how light and flexible they are.

We love Wildling best for comfort and casual use, in that domain they are hard to beat.

Wildling works for a variety of foot types because the sole flattens out and molds to your foot shape. They’re also designed to leave plenty of space in front of the foot so your toes never touch. Wildling makes some of the best barefoot shoes for infants and toddlers.

Keep in mind that the fit varies by model, and models change seasonally so always read the sizing & fit description on Wildling’s website before purchasing. In general this brand fits medium width and high volume, so we usually get the extra insole for my son with low volume feet.

Shapen’s barefoot kids shoes are adorable, sturdy, and have lots of toe room. They also come with removable insoles, and we’ve found that they have a solid fit that works well on many kids’ feet. They’re also freaking cute, and the color and even the glitter have held up well for our testers (I had a bunch of samples I shared with neighbors and friends to test for me).

Besides being on the pricier end, my only real complaint is that the sole isn’t as flexible as I prefer for young children (6 and below) whose bones are still developing. They’re great as a durable school shoe, but I prefer them for older kids.

Mukishoes is a slow fashion barefoot shoe brand that makes adorable kids barefoot shoes with extremely flexible outsoles – and bonus they are sustainably made. They have lots of vegan options and some lined boots in the fall & winter. We’ve never had them fall completely apart, but the thinner uppers take more of a beating than the more durable barefoot kids brands listed here. My kids still love them because they’re so comfy!

Another challenge with Mukishoes is that inventory changes seasonally and it can be hard to plan ahead. They do small batch production, often using limited quantity of materials, so you never know exactly what they’ll have available. Mini Moss is a perennial model and boots come back every fall, otherwise things change each season.

We love Splay because they meet all barefoot shoe requirements, are affordable, easy to get on and off, and lightweight. Our kids’ favorite is the Dash model, which has a cool look, good fit, and is durable. Splay also sells the Explore model which has a cheaper price point, but the canvas doesn’t hold up as well.

When my kids were younger the Explore was our go to, because their feet were growing and they trashed their shoes anyways, so we didn’t mind! But now that they’re a little pickier about style, the Dash is what they prefer.

Over time Saguaro has become one of my kids’ favorite brands. The knit sneakers (above right) are really soft, comfortable, breathable, and have a generous toe box. For the price, we get a lot out of these shoes. They’ve also been adding more “cool” sneaker options over time that we’ve had pretty good luck with, but the velcro straps tend to fail while the rest of the shoe still has a lot of life left in them.

The materials are not as high quality as other brands’ listed here, but they’ve worked well for our needs and are a good balance between function and affordable.

Reima sneakers and sandals are excellent for the price. They have a good fit and feel, they’re durable, and my kids love them. All while still being quite a bit cheaper than many brands! Just note that they are on the slimmer side, so best for long thin feet and not wide feet.

If that’s your kid’s foto type, the Astelu is the perfect everyday shoe. They are soft and breathable (no stinky feet issues even when worn without socks), they pull on with elastic laces, and they have held up really well for us. We adjusted the knot on the elastic lace to tighten them a bit, and they’ve been perfect for my younger son who is constantly on the go.

Less Barefoot?

While Splay shoes are a fantastic entry point for those new to the barefoot movement, the changes might not appeal to the more dedicated barefoot enthusiasts. Most models now have a less flexible sole with a transitional feel, and a removable insole for optional cushion.

This makes them ideal for those who want to ease into barefoot footwear, or who are craving more classic styling. They still are flexible and wide, just not as much as they used to be (except for the kids Explore! Those are unchanged).

Splay will soon be launching an updated Freestyle with a wider and softer fit. If you’re someone who wants a true barefoot feel, stay tuned for that!

Improved Quality

The newly redesigned models are a marked improvement over older versions in terms of design and quality, but they aren’t intended to rival high-end sneakers. Splay shoes are best suited for casual wearers who don’t mind a sneaker looking slightly worn over time. Don’t expect them to hold up as well as $200 shoes, but for $60  – $100 a pair, they offer good value for their price.

Another great improvement to Splay shoes is that they all have a removable insole now! Something I’ve been pushing for from barefoot shoe brands for years. That also gives you the option of two different cushioning levels in the shoe.

Overall Sizing & Fit

While there are some differences between models, overall sizing is as follows:

• Runs slightly small, and doesn’t come in half sizes. I typically wear a women’s 6.5 and a 7 works well for me.
• Average to wide fit – adult models have lots of toe space compared to traditional sneakers, but may not suitable for extra wide toe splay. Kids models have a slim heel but wide toe box.
• Medium to high volume – this is where you get the most variation on fit between models, so read on for the lowdown!

Now let’s get into the individual models!

The Rev

The Rev is probably my favorite new shoe from Splay. They come in both low and high-top versions with a cool, modern look that is reminiscent of Vans shoes.

The design strikes a balance between functionality (as grippy skate shoes) and aesthetics, with a medium stack height that isn’t as thick as the new Runner 1 but still not super thin. I appreciate that they have a lot of vertical toe space, which makes the toe box feel roomier and more comfortable.

My one complaint is that the high tops take forever to put on and off. Neither of us wear high top sneakers very often for this reason, but it seems to take a particularly long time to do the laces on Rev hightop. Once on they’re really comfortable! But the low top Rev is the one I wear most often because I’m impatient.

Overall Justin and I both are fans and find the fit comfy and wearable.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: While the shoe is on the wider side, it’s not suited for extra-wide feet. The rubber sole wraps up around the edge, which makes for a cool look that both Justin and I appreciate, but it limits the stretchability of the canvas upper and makes it less adaptable for extra wide foot shapes.
• Medium to high volume: The Rev fits true to size and works best for medium to high-volume feet. The laces allow for customization, making it possible to tighten the shoe for low-volume feet (like mine). I noticed this caused a bit of bunching though.
• Vertical toe space! The Rev offers good vertical space above the toes, which is a common issue with many shoes. While it doesn’t quite match the spaciousness of the Runner 1, it still provides more than enough room to feel comfortable.

Streetstyle Slip-on

The Streetstyle Slip-On is the Splay shoe I have had the longest time to test. As a slip-on, it’s easy to throw on and go, and the canvas material softens quite a bit over time. However, they have a really high-volume fit that was tricky for me and lots of others. I had to add two tongue pads to the top of the shoe to keep my foot from sliding out!

Justin also had trouble with them being super wide in the heel, but if he wears them with socks they aren’t too slidey. He is less interested in using fit hacks to modify shoes, so socks it is. Despite the issue of them being too loose, we like the design and I find that I wear them on often.

In summary – high volume friends will be happy! And if you’re not high volume, expect to need to make use of tongue pads to get a good fit. Overall I still like the Streetstyle Slip-On because they look cool, are comfy, and easy to put on and off.

Sizing & Fit

These fit similarly to the Rev, just without laces for adjustability.

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: A wide fit that feels generous because there is a lot of volume
• High volume: No adjustments means that medium and low volume feet may have too much room and need to use a fit hack.
• Vertical toe space: Space above the toes in the Streetstyle means more wriggle room!

The 101

The 101 is a leather sneaker that builds on the same foundation as the Rev and Streetstyle Slip-on, but with a more elevated design and materials. The leather upper gives it a more polished feel, making it a good option for those who want a higher end sneaker look. It also feel sturdier, is easier to clean, and offers better durability for long term wear. However, it does feel stiffer initially and takes a bit to break in.

While I love the look, I found these to be the least comfortable of the bunch when brand new. The thicker material makes the whole shoe feel narrower so my toes rub on the sides of the shoe. They’ve been breaking in over time and becoming more comfortable, but I still prefer the Rev and Streetstyle.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium to wide fit: A wide fit that feels a little less roomy than Rev and Streetstyle because the leather is stiffer and thicker.
• High volume: On the high volume side, even with the removable insole inside. But I can cinch the laces to fit.

Runner 1 

The Runner 1 is a transition-style shoe with the thickest sole of all the Splay models and retro vibes. It is less flexible than the other models too, and doesn’t really have any ground feel. But if you are someone who wants zero drop and toe space in an otherwise typical sneaker, they’ll help you on your way to happier feet.

I like them alright myself, but wish the sole was more flexible. I don’t mind the thickness, I just wish it moved with my foot more. And I think the toe box could be a touch wider. But I’d wear them over New Balance sneakers any day!

Running Shoe? Despite its name, I personally wouldn’t use the Runner 1 for running or gym use. The upper is thick and not particularly breathable, and the outsole isn’t as flexible and grippy as I like for gym use. To me, they are a lifestyle shoe.

Sizing & Fot

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width – more toe space than a typical sneaker, but not as roomy as the other models. Best suited for an average width foot.
• Medium to low volume: These have a much closer fit than the other styles and feels a lot more secure on my low volume feet. You can remove the insole for more space.
• Vertical toe space: Runner 1 has a rounded shape with a lot of room above the toes.

Freestyle 2.0

The Freestyle 2.0 is your basic lace up sneaker. They have the thinnest, most flexible sole of any Splay shoe and come with a removable insole. For me the style is nothing special, compared to the other Splay styles, but classic Vans or Keds wearers will appreciate it.

I find the fit on the Freestyle to feel on the narrow side (for a barefoot shoe), because the canvas rubs. I actually feel like I have more room in the Rev and Streetstyle because those models have a lot more vertical space in the toe box. But the outsole is thinner and more flexible than those other models.

The Freestyle sneaker is already going through an update, and will be re-launched this year with a wider toe box and softer feel. I have a feeling I will appreciate this update!

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width: IMO these are best suited for average width and not wide or extra wide feet.
• Medium volume: These have an average volume and fit me fine with the insole and laces tightened a bit. Will fit higher volume feet without insole.

Kids Explore

The Kids Explore has the same thin, flexible sole as the Freestyle but a nice roomy toe box for growing toes. They are one of the cheapest kids barefoot shoes available, and come in all kinds of cute colors and prints. We have followed the Explore shoes from Splay ever since they were launched on a crowdfunding platform in 2018 – my son wore those shoes to death! The velcro is easy, they’re affordable, and they don’t squish their toes. Win all around.

Another great thing about the Explore is they are an accessible shoe for kids with mobility limitations.

The only issue we’ve ever had with the Explore is that the canvas can fade and look worn over time. For the price of these shoes, this is not surprising to me. And we were never too concerned about our shoes looking worn, so my boys just kept wearing them!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Extra wide toe box, slim heel and midfoot: This makes for a secure fit without compromising toe space. If your child has a thick foot throughout, the shoes might feel too snug in the middle.
• Medium volume, with adjustable velcro.

Overall, Splay has done a commendable job with their redesigned lineup. However, if you’re a barefoot purist looking for the most minimalistic experience, Splay might not be the best fit for you. That said, for those transitioning to barefoot shoes or seeking an affordable, casual option, Splay is a strong contender.

My oldest boy has been wearing Splay Shoes for years now. We backed their original crowdfunding campaign in 2018 and they’ve just worked really well for his feet (and our budget). I’ve been hoping and encouraging them to make an adult version for a long time now so I am so stoked to be able to share these with you!

The Freestyle is Splay Shoe’s newest barefoot sneaker that fits even Justin, who wears a US men’s 13. He and I were both Vans wearers before switching to that healthy feet life and the Freestyle is the perfect replacement, both in looks and in price!

Why Splay is Better Than Vans

I will always pick Splay over Vans and other mainstream sneaker brands for three important reasons. Splay Shoes have:

• A foot shaped toe box
• A thin, flexible sole
• No heel rise

If you’re not used to thinking about your feet, it might come as a surprise that those shoe features can have a profound effect on your body. Foot shaped toe boxes allow the big toe to lay straight, making it possible to use your arch muscles while you walk. It also allows blood to flow through the foot, helping prevent issues like plantar fasciitis. Yep, you’re reading that right – tapered shoes like Vans might be causing your flat feet and foot pain.

And flexible soles are no less important: foot motion is intricately connected with the pelvic floor, so a shoe that lets your foot bend and flex (like it’s designed to do) keeps you healthy further up the chain. Finally, Splay shoes are completely flat from toe to heel so you can stand erect with good alignment. You may think that Vans are also completely flat, but the insole of the shoe has a built in heel lift. Even a small heel like that pushes your center of gravity forward, stressing your joints.

I could go on and on! If you’d like to learn more about the impact shoes have on your body, read this post on the benefits of barefoot shoes. Especially for my children, who don’t have foot issues (yet), I am adamant about putting them in these types of shoes.

Suffice it to say, choosing Splay shoes over Vans is a gift to your body that will keep on giving. Now let’s move on to picking a size in your Splay Freestyle sneakers.

Splay Freestyle Sizing

When it comes to picking a size, I always recommend learning how to measure your feet first. Remember that how you got your foot measurement determines how much extra space you need in front of your toes. My feet measure 22.8 cm long using the wall method (read the article linked above for an explanation), so I need a shoe 1-1.5cm longer than that. I wear my shoes without socks, and chose the women’s 7 which is 1.1 cm longer than my feet. If I were to wear socks, I would probably go with an 8.

When picking Freestyles for Justin, I broke my own rule and ordered his usual size without measuring (shhhh, don’t tell!). They ended up being just right for him, and it’s a good thing since he got the biggest size available. But for my children, I both measured and used the printable sizing guide to pick. It’s hard to keep track of a kids’ shoe size, so I always measure before ordering for them. With Splay I know to go with the larger size if we are in-between, because the kids sizes run smaller than other barefoot kids’ brands.

Note that the sole thickness depends on the size you’re ordering. Sizes 8C – 12C (or EU 24-29) are 4mm thick , Sizes 13C – 7M/9W (or EU 31-39) are 5mm thick, and sizes 8M/10W and above are 6.5mm thick.

Will They Fit My Foot Type?

Same Shoe, Different Foot

On the left you can see my youngest son who has a thick, high volume foot and a high arch. He has trouble getting those “puffy bricks,” as I adoringly call them, into shallow or tight shoes. The Splay Freestyle works, but the tongue only just barely covers the space between the sides of the shoes.

On the right is my older boy’s skinny ankle and low volume foot in the Splay Freestyle. He cinches the laces tighter and they work well for his foot type. In general, these seem to be geared toward medium to low volume feet, but can work for high volume as well.

Splay VS Other Barefoot Shoe Brands

There are over 200 barefoot shoe brands all over the world, each catering to a different foot type. But since we don’t have time to go over each one, let’s look at some of the major brands in comparison to Splay. Below I’ve organized 8 barefoot shoe brands from widest toe box (top left) to narrowest (bottom right).

Splay shoes have a toe box that is comparable in width to brands like Freet, Feelgrounds, and Lems. That means they are good for a wide toe spread, but not crazy wide like Be Lenka and Softstar Primals. If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, suffice it to say that Splay Shoes should fit most toe widths.

One quirk about Splay shoes is that they taper in at the arch (not to be confused with a toe box taper). Justin has brick shaped feet that are almost as wide at the midfoot as they are at the toes, and in his Splay Freestyles his midfoot is sitting right on the edge of the sole. It’s a common fit issue for him (if you have feet like his, brands like Freet, PaperKrane, and Xero shoes tend to be wide through the middle), but he is still wearing them without trouble.

For kids, Splay has been a wonderful addition to the available options because they are affordable and still look like regular shoes. My boys have always refused to wear the moccasin style shoes that are readily available, but for a while that was all I could find in our price range that also met my standards for healthy footwear. Are They Durable?

My kids are tough on their shoes, like they should be. So it was an open question whether they’d tear through Splay Shoes in a matter of months. Since we’ve had a few years in the Explore shoes, we’ve learned time and again that they are quite durable! The biggest flaw Splay shoes have is that the color fades and gets discolored over time. But I personally don’t worry about that with my children – as long as they don’t fall apart we are good. In my own pair of Freestyle shoes, I don’t expect to be dragging them on concrete or wearing them in mud so anticipate they’ll wear better. But I will need to wash them occasionally as the grey collects dirt.

If there are just a few stains, then I spot clean at the sink. If they’re really dirty, I put them in a garment bag and run them through the washing machine on gentle cycle with scent/dye free detergent, then set them over the air vent to dry quickly.

Do You Wear Socks with Splay Shoes?

“Barefoot is best” are words I live by. As long as it is safe for me to do so, I am completely unshod. And when I do put on shoes, I almost always wear them barefoot, including my Splay Freestyles. The same goes for my children, because socks can restrict your toes just like shoes can! But if you want or need socks (because it’s cold or to prevent blisters perhaps) then consider toe socks or anatomical socks with space for your big toes. Here are a few options:

If you have a foot that stays thick through the middle and heel this is a brand to consider. However, this can be problematic for people who have more fan-shaped (wide at the toes, narrow at the heels)

Wildling Shoes are incredibly minimal and lightweight, they feel as close to being actually barefoot as it gets. But for how flexible and thin they are, they are surprisingly practical.

While it’s true that they are not as durable as other outdoor barefoot shoes, our Wildlings have held up really well as lifestyle shoes. They even have water resistant options, but we’ve found that water can come through if they get really soaked. So we don’t usually wear Wildlings in bad weather for long stretches of time.

We like Magical Shoes because they have a wide variety of styles and they are all uber soft and flexible. I’m a big fan of their Lupino chelsea boots, they’re so comfortable and it’s hard to find a classic chelsea style that soft. In fact, I love almost everything they make!

The only complaint I have is that the lining on the sneaker styles (Promenade and Explorer) is rough and I don’t love the way it feels. Oh, and the fact that the closed toed shoes run much smaller than the sandals.

I really don’t like spending an arm and a leg on shoes my kids will beat up and grow out of, but I also have a pretty strict set of guidelines my kids’ shoes need to follow. After a lot of research and trials, I’ve narrowed the options down to a select few we’ll be coming back to again and again over the years. Below is a list of our top 5 tried and true shoes that fit my kids’ active lifestyles and my personal budget.

When buying shoes for kids, I always buy what they need right then in their current size, rather than trying to predict the future. I also highly recommend measuring your kids feet and checking the brand’s size guide every time you make a purchase.

1. Vivobarefoot Ultra Bloom

These are my favorite shoes for kids! They are Vivobarefoot‘s most affordable shoe, and they are so easy for them to put on and off themselves. They can be worn in all terrains, get caked in mud, soaked in water, and will wash off and be ready to do it all again. My kids love these shoes and even wear socks with them when it’s chilly (yes, it looks terrible, but whatevs).

I followed the size chart and I’ve had no issues with sizing. In this shoe I find they can be worn when they’re on the big side without a problem, so I usually go with the larger size if they’re in between sizes.

2. IFME $15-$30

These are also a big favorite in our house. Only certain models of IFME shoes are minimalist friendly. We’ve had particularly good luck with the Playa and the Rey lines. Unfortunately we lost my son’s Rey sneakers and haven’t been able to find them again online. They sell them every so often on Zulily, usually for $25 or less. The Playa is available on Amazon, but the sizes come in and out of stock. We love the Playa fisherman sandal. They have a fantastically wide toe box and are really flexible. Sometimes you can find these in bigger kids sizes, but most of the availability is in smaller sizes. I purchased mine for about $18. There is a lot of variability in pricing and sizing availability, so check back often.

3. Bobux – $20-$50

Bobux has a lot of great options for warmer weather. They’ve got boots for rain and muck as well as shoes and sandals. They’ve recently opened up an Amazon Bobux shop, which is great for people who want to try them first. We buy their boots every year and my kids trash them, and they continue to hold up beautifully! My favorite for spring is the Jodphur boot because it’s unlined, so it doesn’t get too hot. See a full review of the Bobux Aspen boot here

4. Jack & Lily $16-$34

This brand only goes up to 3 year old sizing, which is a bummer. But they have excellent shoes and they almost always have shoes on sale. They also have some styles available on Amazon. We bought ours for $16 each, + a few dollars shipping. They are real leather and have a rubber sole so they hold up well for outdoor play. They have My Shoes and My Mocs, which are sized differently and have different soles, so be sure to read their size charts closely when ordering. The My Mocs are the most flexible and we have loved them for our toddler. They also have great customer service and shipped right away. I really wish they made bigger sizes!

5. Splay Athletics – $35

Splay has also been a great shoe for my son. I did a full review of them here. Unfortunately they are out of many sizes right now, so I’m not sure if I’ll be buying them again this spring, but once they restock I almost certainly will. These are a great affordable option for bigger kids.

The following review is of the original Splay Athletics

I was super excited to hear about Splay Athletic’s kickstarter for affordable kid’s shoes, since there are not a lot of options out there for kids right now. It is so hard to stomach the cost of expensive minimalist shoes your kid will wear for 6 months and then either grow out of or bust through.

Cost

At the price point of $35 for one pair, and the fact that they come in blue (a requirement in our house!), I did not hesitate to place my order. If you buy two pairs there is a 10% discount, making them $31.50 each.

Shipping is $2.99, and they have free returns and exchanges (provided you use the size guide to choose your size and they still don’t fit). Vivobarefoot’s kid shoes range from $75-$100 for comparable styles, and Soft Stars are $55-$75, for comparison. Probably the most enticing part of Splay’s shoes is that they stay the same price even in big kid’s sizes. Big kids shoes are especially hard to find flat and flexible, and they become very expensive very quickly.

When choosing a size, I followed their size guide and bought according to my son’s measurements. They came and fit perfectly. It seems many people who ordered their kids normal size but did not measure according to Splay’s directions were disappointed with the size they received, so definitely use their size guide.

Materials

These are made entirely out of 100% cotton canvas. They’re lightweight, feel good on the skin and can easily be worn without socks. After a few months of wear I noticed the blue exterior was wearing away and I thought for sure there would be holes.

I was surprised to see that the material underneath the blue is actually pretty sturdy and doesn’t have any holes. Still, it’s a little unsightly to have the exterior of the shoe basically coming off. My son had one other pair of shoes he wears in addition to these, so they don’t get used every single day, but are used in all terrains and weather.

The material does stain which, when combined with the holes in the blue, makes them look extra ratty. Personally, I don’t really care what my son’s shoes look like as long as he likes them and they function as intended (they’re shoes, and he’s a kid, and I don’t think he’s ever been anywhere fancy in his life!). That being said, these are definitely play shoes.

I washed them once on gentle and it did cause some fraying of the straps (they warn against this on their site), but none of the stains came out.

Functionality

For kids, these are very functional shoes. They’re easy to get on and off, they’re lightweight, they can get wet without being ruined, and the generous velcro straps make them quite adjustable.

Shape

I like that these are shaped to fit wide and narrow feet (generous velcro straps), and the toe box is foot shaped. The sole, while flexible, leaves something to be desired in my mind. It’s pretty stiff (for a barefoot shoe) and difficult to bend.

Customer Service

Unfortunately, only their aqua and pink colors have all sizes in stock ( as of the time of this writing), while the gray and navy blue are mostly sold out. I expect them to get a restock, but don’t know for sure. I e-mailed them a week ago to ask them some questions (including when they were planning on getting more inventory) and have not heard back yet.

Conclusion

I know starting a small business is crazy, and I am sure they have been going through growing pains in their first year of business which hopefully will smooth over with time. I’d like to see their sole material improved, and of course more sizes and colors available for purchase. But because of their price point I do plan on ordering from Splay Athletics again and will definitely be keeping them on my radar as they make adjustments and grow.
