Boat shoes have returned with a vengeance, and I’m really not sad about it. They are more sophisticated than a sneaker, but just as comfortable. And made with Peerko’s signature quality materials. These have a slim look to them, but the interior space is roomier than it looks. They have plenty of space above the toes, and have molded to fit my wide toe box quite well. I don’t recommend them for extra wide feet though. I am wearing my usual size 37.

New color and restock! Possibly the shoe I am most excited about for 2026. My collaboration with Origo has expanded beyond Huaraches into these handwoven Ballerina mary jane shoes that bring me so much joy! Last year we weren’t able to launch them until late in the season, and they sold out immediately. Groundies Cricket

In the US these are temporarily only available in Men’s sizes. But I’ve been told the women’s sizes are returning in April. If you’re size 40 or above, you can shop Men’s Cricket.

Another shoe style making the rounds right now is what Samantha and I have dubbed the grandpa shoe. It is a bit of a cross between a moccasin, a loafer, and a slipper. And similar to boat shoes, they are supremely comfortable, but not sporty. The hilarious part about it is that I was not a fan of this style a year ago, but have since completely changed my tune.

The Groundies Cricket laces up really securely and is very soft and comfortable. They feel roomy and forgiving, even though they don’t look very wide (still not extra wide friendly though). There is a removable insole if you want more volume, and generally I am a huge fan. I do wish I could slip them on and off without doing the laces, but no dice.

They’re back! I have loved these sandals for many a year, but the company took a break and they weren’t available for a while (small business ownership is not for the faint of heart). Well, they finally returned late last summer AND we started carrying them at Anya’s Shop in the US for easier North American access! These are IMO the best sexy high heels replacement for fancy occasions.

The standard version does have a slimmer fit and are not likely to work well for extra wide and/or high volume feet, even though the open design allows your feet to comfortably spill over a bit.

But they recently announced a Wide version of this sandal that is on preorder now! We have not personally tried this yet, but I looked at the size guide and it does indeed look extra wide in the toe box. The Wide option shows up for the Rosegold, Blush, and Black models.

I personally love the Abbie as a fisherman style shoe, and the Fida for that strappy look. Also a longtime fan of the Trevi and Monstera. The new midsole option is only a couple of millimeters thick, so it’s not hugely cushioned. But I do appreciate the bit of extra softness and find that I want to reach for them more when they have the thicker outsole.

Lang.S Sandals & Mira Flats

Lang.S sandals are some of my favorites, but last year we weren’t able to bring them into Anya’s Shop in the US (major bummer!). The Soul sandal has been a favorite of mine for quite a few years now, they are so trusty and easy to wear with a velcro back stsrap. Newer to the line up is the Selene – she has a sexier, more elevated vibe that is still practical for lots of walking. Both are well made, and fit lots of foot types well without pinching and without flopping. And they are extra wide friendly, so an alternative to High Feels if that fit won’t work for you.

I feel like Wildling often gets left out of the style conversation, because they are not mainstream or typical. But I kind of love that about them. The bright colors make me happy, and they are so breathable and light. The most barefoot shoe of barefoot shoes. The ones that have caught my eye this season are the Cotinga Petrol (a pop of blue is very springy) and the Ranidae in Plum. I wear my Wildling’s often on travel days, because they are so comfy.

They also now have US distribution set up, which means that not all models are available here in the US. If you’re overseas, you get lots more options!! But everything you see here is available in both locations.

Magical Shoes loafers + flats – Extra Wide Friendly

Magical Shoes released several new models this spring, and one that stands out particularly to me is the loafer. They have an optional fringe and are super soft and flexible. They aren’t quite as refined as the Peerko Tala, but they are wider and softer.

Also new from Magical Shoes is an ankle strap flat that I think is really nice. Magical Shoes is a good brand for people with extra wide feet. Just be warned that the ballet flats tend to run big and wide, while the sneakers/loafers/boots run small. I got a size 38 in the loafers and 36 in the ballet flats.

Softstar Dahlia Sandal – Extra Wide Friendly

Softstar has released a new feminine sandal that is extra wide friendly! The Dahlia has a pretty scalloped strap, and is soft and flexible. I recommend them for extra wide, high volume feet (Samantha is wearing them, but I passed on them because my feet are rather narrow in the heels). The Dahlia also comes in a regular width, but we find it to be a bit of an odd pointy shape. I’d love for it to come in the shape overall shape as wide, just slimmer across. These also have a bullhide leather outsole which is wonderfully minimal and flexible, but can be slippery on smooth or wet surfaces.

Softstar is also releasing a Primal Ballerine this week. In this model both the Regular and the Wide are square-shaped and wide (Wide is EXTRA wide). Samantha and I both have tester pairs of these and find them pretty wide through the entire length of the shoe, so they are loose on my heels. The sizing has been tricky with these – our first pairs in our usual sizes were too short, then the size up was too long. We’ll update this soon when we have better guidance from Softstar.

Sneakers

Bohempia Orik & Vikla – Extra Wide Friendly

Bohempia has some new releases that are fun for spring, and all Bohempia sneakers come in two widths. That means they are extra wide friendly. I’m a longtime fan of this brand, they are a staple brand if you are into classic sneaker styling.

The Vikla Candy especially catches my eye for spring. They are a fun and colorful slip-on. I’ve worn the Vikla for years now, and the hemp gets better with age. I’m also really liking the Orik in Brown-Tan. It’s creamy and coffee-colored, and brown is everywhere right now. Samantha is wearing those in Wide.

Xero Wynn Red

Another trend this year is color. Though can we really call that a trend? I think it’s more that people are tired of being constrained and want to find joy in the little things.

The Xero Wynn Red gives retro vibes and is an on-point pop of color. They have a slimmer fit that is secure through the midfoot and heel. Good news for people who tend to flop around in their shoes, but they are not super wide in the toe box. The feel is light and flexible, and I find them really comfortable. This is one of Xero’s best shoes, IMO.

True to size. Slightly narrow on my wide toes, but the mesh upper is forgiving and I still wear them comfortably.

Koel Ila Suede

New color and restock of the green suede that sold out in a flash last fall! These are my favorite cool sneakers, and I particularly love the green suede. It styles like a neutral but is also fun and colorful. The suede is also a little softer than the smooth leather Ila with no break in time.

In addition to the green being back, we added a new beige with burgundy stripe coloway! And because these are once again selling out fast, we’ve already placed a new restock order and there miiiight be some more colors coming late spring. It’s not hard to see why these were our bestselling sneaker in 2025.

Mukishoes Lyra Rheia

Alright, Mukishoes launched the Lyra sneakers last spring for the first time and they are soooo soft. So I was really excited when they expanded on that line and introduced several new colors this year. They have your essential white, a very on-trend chocolate brown, and some lovely pops of color. I love them all, but I think I am most excited about the brown.

Ohne makes some of the most stylish shoes in barefoot, I have loved seeing their new styles come out. Most exciting to me this spring is an extra wide version of their ever-popular 080 sneaker. Also, I am really into their Lumi loafers and their Retro Run sneakers. They do an excellent job of being very on-point style wise without cutting corners on the fit.

Ohne is a brand that makes entirely vegan shoes, which sometimes I am not super into because I don’t like plasticky faux leather. However, I have never had an issue with any of Ohne’s materials. In fact they have worn very well and look and feel great. I basically love everything they make!

I can’t do squished toes anymore. But I also spend time outside everyday, no matter the weather. So for the last decade I’ve made it my mission to find and test the most practical, but also truly comfortable, naturally fitting barefoot and wide toe box boots.

I present to you the best of the best barefoot winter boots that have a wide toe box and natural feel. No foot pain this winter please!

Staying Warm in Barefoot Winter Boots

But before we get to the actual shoes, here are a few of my best tips for getting the most versatility out of your comfy, wide, snow boots this winter.

• Learn how to waterproof your shoes.
• Add a warm insole.
• Find warm (but foot friendly) socks to wear inside your boots. I recommend those with a high wool content.
• Get yourself a pair of ice cleats for very icy conditions – they fit over any of the boots here.

Alright, let’s dig in to the best barefoot winter boots. First we’ll cover the best warm boots for snow and traction, and then the best for comfort & ground feel.

Best for Snow

Good barefoot snow boots are warm, waterproof (or can be waterproofed), and have good traction. Here are what I consider to be the best options for wintry weather conditions!

Vivobarefoot has quite the winter line up this year, with something for every kind of weather.

Canvas & Wool | Rated to -50F / -46C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Great

The showstopper for the most serious of winter weather is the Tundra ESC (find the men’s version here). It’s suitable even for arctic conditions, with a felted wool boot liner and insoles – the first of its kind in the natural footwear world and a real achievement! These fit pretty wide already, but I know from experience with Steger Mukluks that the felt will tamp down.

We get weather here as low as -50F, but I don’t spend much time out when it’s that cold. However I will go on pretty long walks when it’s -20F. I will for sure be using these Tundra boots when it’s that cold.

Textile | Rated to 15F / -10C | Traction: Snow – Good, Ice – Ok

If you don’t need something arctic-level intense, I am truly loving the Gobi Hiber. They pull on easily, are water resistant, and lined with soft fleece. In fact, they’ve been my preferred boots for morning walks this fall. Just so cozy and cute. Men’s version here.

These come with the Thermal Insole that I don’t love, so if you want really warm toes I suggest replacing it with a felted wool insole.

Textile | Rated to 15F / -10C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

An even comfier, warmer option is the Explorer Mid. They’re soooo nice and have better traction than the Gobi Hiber. But not water resistant (which is weird to me) and a lower cut. I have replaced the insole on these as well, and suggest using a waterproof spray for wet weather. Men’s version here.

Leather | Rated to 15F / -10C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Tracker Winter is a waterproof, insulated version of their hiking boot that I quite like as a snow shoe. They are kind of stiff when new, and I like to size up in them for space. But really functional. Men’s version here.

Sizing & Fit

• Wide width (Tundra, Gobi Hiber, Explorer) & Medium width (Tracker & Gobi Warmlined)
• Sloped, so not the best fit for square shaped feet
• Medium volume
• Runs slightly long – I normally size up in winter boots but didn’t need to in any of these except for the Tracker Winter. Those I got in a 38, the rest are size 37.

Lems Shoes

Lems is an in-between brand with a more traditional thicker outsole, but a wide toe box and natural fit. Great for people who want to take care of their feet but aren’t ready for full barefoot! Or if you just need something super practical for the winter, Lems has you covered. However if you want that flexibility and ground feel, I’d choose something else on this list.

Leather | Rated to 5F / -15C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Breck boot is a taller cut, waterproof boot with a side zip and the same thicker outsole. This year they come in an insulated version, and I find them to be a stellar snow boot and all-purpose cold weather boot. The sole is definitely robust and not super flexible. They also are not fully zero drop, but have a 3mm heel rise. For me this is an acceptable compromise in a winter boot, but if you are sensitive you may notice it.

Leather | Rated to 0F / -18C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The new Chelsea Tuff in brown has a fluffy collar and lining that is surprisingly warm. The sole is quite thick (makes me feel so tall!) but flexes at the toe. Really well-made shoes with a grippy practical outsole. Also waterproof. The black color has no fluff and not as warm, but is still insulated.

Leather | Rated to 5F / -15C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Boulder Boot Summit is the warmest Boulder boot option from Lems, with the same outsole as on the Breck boot. So it’s got good grip and is well insulated. I personally prefer the Boulder Boot Grip, because it’s lighter and more flexible (and also fully zero drop). But if you want the extra warmth the Summit is a good one!

Sizing & Fit

• Wide – not quite as wide as the Lems Primal Zen or Chelsea suede, but still quite generous.
• Plateau shaped – may not work for really square feet, but should for most others.
• Medium to high volume.
• Runs small. I consistently size up a half size larger than I do in most barefoot boot brands. Mine are all a women’s 8.

Zaqq Quintic

Leather | Wool Lined | Waterproof | Rated to -5F/-20C | Ships from US or EU

Traction Rating: Snow – Great | Ice – Great

The Zaqq Quintic is so soft, and yet warm and practical. They are definitely the most flexible option in this list that is also snow ready.The outsole is grippy so you’re not sliding everywhere, and the waterproof upper means your feet stay dry. Both Justin and I love these boots as a stylish barefoot winter boot that can be worn under dress pants, with jeans, or even leggings and skirts. They’re surprisingly warm and functional even without a heavy sole.

We carry them in the US as much as possible (linked above), but they usually sell out so you can also find them in Germany from Zaqq Barefoot directly where they carry additional colors and vegan versions.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• Medium to wide width
• Mountain shaped
• Medium volume
• Runs Small

The fur lining is quite thick and so they feel pretty snug in my normal size. I went up one and they still are quite cozy!

Xero Alpine

Waterproof | Vegan | Rated to 5F / -15C | Ships from USA

Traction Rating: Snow – Great | Ice – Ok

The Alpine Pull-On is new for 2025 and my favorite Xero winter boot. They are surprisingly warm for how lightweight they are, and so easy to pull on and off. You get some adjustability with the toggle, but they are quite roomy through the heel so I don’t recommend sizing up for socks. They’ll fit higher volume feet best, but my lazy bones will be pulling these on often this winter.

The Xero Alpine is not as warm or as flexible as the Alpine Pull-on, but it does cinch around your foot much better so is more secure. I think they’d be good for a slightly warmer climate than mine (I’m thinking Rocky Mountains), but not my top pick for frigid midwest winters. I did swap out the insole for a sheepskin one and that helped a lot (it always does!). The sole is on the stiff side, and I found them to be slippery on ice (but fine in snow).

Sizing & Fit

• Medium to wide width – Not recommended for extra wide feet.
• Mountain shape (rounded toe box)
• High volume
• The Alpine boot runs on the small side, but the Alpine Pull-On runs bigger! I wear an 8 in Alpine and a 7.5 in the Pull-On.

Be Lenka Winter Boots – Extra Wide Friendly

Be Lenka Barefoot is also upping the winter boot game this year. They have 3 excellent options to choose from, and all have a generous wide toe box for real comfort. They may be a bit heavier and thicker than the Vivobarefoot options, but I like that I don’t have to add extra insoles to make them warmer.

The new ArcticEdge is super warm, water resistant, and has great traction. I admit that my lazy bones prefer the pull-on Vivo boots for daily wear, but these are more practical for weather. A kind of heavy duty winter urban hybrid.

Another practical option from Be Lenka is the PolarStride. It has the same Primaloft material as in the ArcticEdge, but a more flexible outsole and a taller shaft. I love the idea of them, and they are quite cozy, but I wish there was a way to tighten them. They fit loose on me.

Leather & Wool | Rated to -10F/-23C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Winter 3.0 is also wool lined, highly water resistant, and on the same functional outsole, but has more of a dressy look. They aren’t as warm or soft and comfy as the others, but bonus points for style. Also, I love real wool. They’re a good hybrid everyday & snow boot.

Besides these, Be Lenka has a variety of fleece-lined boots that are cozy and nice but not as winter-friendly.

Saguaro Rise

The Saguaro Rise is the cheapest practical barefoot snow boot to date! They are waterproof, lightly insulated, and cinch up nicely to fit different foot types or different socks.

They do run small, especially if you have wide feet (and I would skip entirely if you have extra wide feet). And shipping can be a bit slow from Saguaro. But if you are in need of an affordable waterproof snow boot this is the best there is!

Sizing & Fit Type

• Medium wide fit
• Mountain shaped toe box
• Runs small – size up at least one. I need a size 39 in these and usually wear a size 38 in winter boots.

Jenon Leather Snowflake – Extra Wide Friendly

These Snowflake boots from Czech brand Jenon Leather were a surprise hit for me. They are very cozy warm with a wide toe box and slim heel (which means they don’t slide around my narrow heels). I so appreciate that in a winter boot, where it’s really common for me to need to add leg warmers to get that cinched in feel. They also don’t press over the tops of my toes, even with the thick lining.

The leather upper is smooth and quite water resistant so I didn’t bother treating it. I also appreciated that the sole is a bit thicker than many barefoot boots for more warmth while still being flexible.

Sizing & Fit Type

• Extra wide fit
• Plateau shaped toe box
• Medium to low volume
• Runs small – I recommend sizing up one.

The lining is very thick so I am glad I sized up. I found that the volume was on the lower side, but I know that many people with high volume feet enjoy these boots after sizing up. Freet Arken – Extra Wide Friendly

The Freet Arken is an insulated waterproof boot with quite a cozy upper. Like in Vivobarefoot boots, I find the insole to be not warm enough for winter so I recommend replacing it for a wool alternative. Once swapped out these are very warm.

The outsole has lugs that works best for soft ground – snow, mud, grass. I recommend these for cold weather hiking where you don’t get deep snow (because they are a shorter height).

Sizing & Fit Type

• Wide fit – will work for some extra wide feet too
• Plateau shaped toe box
• Medium to low volume
• Runs small

I sized up to a 38 and they’re still a little snug, but I can wear medium weight wool socks with them.

Steger Mukluks – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather | Wool Lined | Rated to -50F / -46C | Ships from USA

Traction Rating: Snow – Great | Ice – Great

Steger Mukluks are supremely warm and also wide and flexible. The insole and body of the boots are lined with 9mm thick felted wool that is moisture wicking and built for extreme temps. The outsole is rubber and surprisingly grippy on ice and show. The exterior is high quality moose hide (both soft and super durable).

But a new update to the outsole makes them no longer zero drop (roughly 5mm heel lift) and not as flexible as before. To me, 3mm and below is acceptable in a snow boot but 5mm is pushing it a little. However, for some people in really cold climates, this small heel lift may be worth it, because of how warm they are (and because they are not as expensive as Vivobarefoot’s Tundra Esc boots).

None of the Steger models come waterproof, so I also bought their waterproof spray and treated my boots before wearing them. It has worked great for me, whenever my boots get wet the water beads up and rolls off the leather instead of soaking in. I reapply it each fall and they look almost brand new even after four winters! And I hear repeatedly from readers who have owned Stegers for 5, 10, even 20 years and they are still going strong.

To be as close to a barefoot winter boot (and as warm) as possible, use them with the felted wool insole instead of the supportive insole (boots ship with both). And if you have low volume feet like me you might even want to order an extra felt insole and layer both inside the shoe.

Sizing & Fit Type

• 3 widths fit average to extra wide feet
• Square toe box fits most foot shapes
• High volume
• True to size

Note that the felted lining tamps down with use! So they might feel pretty snug at first, but you will get more room as you wear them. I ordered a Women’s 7 Wide for my wide feet and they are very spacious after a few years. You can also call in to Steger’s shop and ask for internal measurements.

If you have low volume, narrow heels, and/or thin ankles, expect to need an extra insole, thick socks, or leg warmers to make these a secure fit. You also might want to order a model with ties so you can tighten them on your leg. If you have thicker ankles and calves and don’t need the ties, Steger also has models that are just pull-on.

Best for Comfort

The following warm barefoot winter boots are cozy and comfortable, but not as functional for lots of time outdoors in wintery conditions. They are your lifestyle boots, but made warmer than most other barefoot boots!

The Shapen Cozy is so light and soft, they are perfect for someone who has sensitive feet that get irritated by stiff heel cups. I have reached for mine frequently the last three winters since they were released and thoroughly enjoy every time. They are an excellent cozy barefoot boot for cold winter days, especially if you are someone who wants a true barefoot feel.

The Cozy is my favorite comfy warm boot option from Shapen, but they also carry the Urbaneer (similar but without a side zip) and the Frosty (fine, but not my favorite). This is a good brand for people with extra wide feet that have a hard time fitting into other brands.

Unlike many lined boots, the Shapen Cozy does not run small. I am still wearing a size 38, but I have more room than I do in most of my other size 38 barefoot boots (they fit almost like a 39). I still don’t recommend sizing down in most cases because you’ll likely want to be able to wear socks.

The Peerko Frost is probably the most stylish barefoot winter boot in the bunch! The smooth leather is naturally water resistant, and you can waterproof them yourself for extra protection. The outsole isn’t the best for winter terrain, so I prefer to use them for warmth as I go around town as opposed to playing in the snow or hiking. But if you’re someone who needs to look nice in the winter AND spend time walking around outside they are phenomenal.

Peerko boots have a pretty universal fit and are well loved across the board. They probably won’t suite someone with an extra wide toe splay, and you might want to size up one because of the thick lining. I wear mine in a 38.

The Zeazoo Dingo is a personal favorite of mine. They are the perfect barefoot Uggs dupe and so easy to slip on for quick jaunts outside when it’s freezing. I wear mine often as school-run, coffee-run, and mail-run shoes. The sheepskin lining wicks sweat so they’re comfortable barefoot and they are just so warm but lighter than all the above options (and nice and wide). You can also roll the top down to get a furry cuff and a shorter height.

While they are a home run for warmth, they don’t have a robust outsole so the bottom edges of the boot can start wearing quickly if you use them roughly. And the upper is not water resistant. They’re more of a warm lifestyle boot than an active outdoor snow boot. Still, a total lifesaver if you live in a cold climate.

I size down in the Dingo and still have plenty of space! The cozy fur lining also tamps down with use so it’s ok if they feel snug when brand new. Once worn in they can be a little loose on thin ankles and narrow heels, so leg warmers are a great way to make the Dingo work for low volume feet.

Softstar Phoenix

The Softstar Phoenix is a fully lined high quality sheepskin boot with a side zipper for easy on and off. The fur is super thick, warm, and close fitting so you don’t feel like you’re going to walk out of the boot. They can be worn with or without socks because of the breathable, moisture wicking sheepskin. They keep my legs and feet super cozy in cold temps, and they’re so easy to put on and off! I find myself wearing them a ton on snowy winter walks.

The only downside is that because the leather upper comes all the way down to the flat sole they can take scuffs sooner than if that part was covered with outsole material. I would also recommend waterproofing them if you plan to use them in wet conditions.

The Phoenix is made entirely of leather and so can stretch to fit a variety of foot types, but they might feel too snug on extra wide/high volume feet. I also recommend sizing up because of the thick lining unless you have quite slim, low volume feet. Mine are a 7U, or Women’s 8.

Wildling Shoes hold a special place in my heart. They literally feel like wearing nothing, combining innovation, quality materials, and a gorgeous aesthetic. Besides being adorable, Wildling has somehow managed to create an ultra thin outsole that bends in all directions effortlessly. The uppers of Wildling winter shoes have an integrated waterproof membrane and are topped with either wool or cotton. The models change annually, but for the best warmth I recommend the ones made of a wool upper with a wool lining.

I also wear a felt insole inside my Wildling winter boots, which I consider essential (my cold rating above includes the insoles). If I wear wool socks and leg warmers I can even get by in 15 F/ -10 C for short periods of time! Though I am most comfortable in Wildling boots in temps of about 25 F+. While these are not sufficient to keep me outside for long during the harsh Midwest winters, I wear mine frequently for short jaunts and feel like I’m in slippers the whole time.

While all Wildlings have the same squared off toe box, some models fit roomier than others so I always recommend checking the fit guide on the shoe listing. Mukishoes Igneous

The Mukishoes Igneous is a soft boot that looks stylish and on trend while still being delightfully light and flexible. They’re one of my faves! A similar feel to the Shapen Cozy, but with a slimmer toe box and a felted wool lining. I wear mine with an additional wool insole for warmth (and it helps them fit better on my low arches too).

Mukishoes has a few other really nice barefoot boots, but the Igneous is the warmest and best for wintry weather!

The Feelgrounds Patrol Winter boots have a robust outsole with good traction and a waterproof upper, while still retaining some flexibility. They are also vegan and insulated for warmth. I use them with their optional extra insole for a better fit on my low volume feet.

For me the heel cup is a little stiff (I have a sensitive achilles), but Justin wears his frequently in the winter and they are very practical. Great for someone who wants a durable waterproof barefoot winter boot with a bit more sole.

Manitobah Mukluks

Manitobah is an Aboriginal-owned Canadian brand that makes faux fur and sheepskin lined mukluks. The original mukluks are built on a super flexible Vibram outsole (but not all models are zero drop, so look for the flat ones!). They are thick and warm inside and yet you still feel grounded. One bonus to Manitobah is that they have waterproof options!

Manitobah tends to fit quite loose through the ankle so I chose this wrap tie version for adjustability. They are the softest, coziest boots! Since the Short Wrap is not waterproof, I used Nikwax spray on it, which seems to be working well.

Manitobah mukluks have a fairly tapered toe box when brand new, but there is a lot of vertical space and the leather stretches out a lot as you wear them. Still not best suited for really wide toes.

The Magical Shoes Alaskan is an ultra flexible, ultra lightweight wool-lined barefoot winter boot. The outsole is very grippy on snow and ice, and the side zipper makes them easy to put on and off. For being so light, they are surprisingly practical. But I do find the material on the thinner side so my feet got cold faster than in the other boots I tested. I put in an extra insole and warm socks, but still felt the cold through the top fairly quickly in my climate.

While the upper material is water resistant, the stitching, zipper and the tongue is not waterproof so water can come through pretty easily if soaked.

I definitely recommend sizing up in these, especially if you have wide feet!

Xanthe Anna (UK)

Sheepskin & Veg Tanned Leather | Sizes EU 35-47 | Ships from UK

These sheepskin boots from Xanthe Anna are obviously high quality and really warm. They also have a wide, generous toe box. I like that they stand upright without flopping over. The sole is quite thick and not super flexible, but that may be what you need in the winter.

They’re made-to-order in the UK, repairable, and you can even customize a pair with your desired colors, shaft height, and outsole thickness.

For years we struggled to find kids winter boots that were both good for their feet and practical for real weather. Finally there are options that have a wide toe box and flexibility. We did the research so you don’t have to!

Here are the best barefoot winter boots for kids that are practical for playing in cold, mud, snow, and rain.

Why Barefoot Boots for Kids?

We live in a cold climate with temps often dipping below zero Fahrenheit. In order to get outside year round, practical shoes are a must. But after my run-in with chronic foot pain I’ve learned that we also need shoes that don’t hurt our feet! This is especially important for little feet that are still developing.

The barefoot winter boots listed here are what I feel confident putting on my own children, knowing they won’t damage their growing bodies and will still protect them from the elements. This is the same criteria I use for all my kids shoes.

Before we head into my recommended winter shoes, here are a few tips for staying warm in the coldest of temps.

Winter Hacks

The following are winter essentials in our house. They keep us moving and grooving in our wide toe box boots all through the cold season.

• Wool insoles (Felty is extra thick, Woolly is thinner) – I keep an extra pair handy to add to boots that aren’t quite warm enough. They make a HUGE difference.
• Wool socks – my younger son wears Plus 12 socks and my older son wears Creepers toe socks.
• Waterproofing products – Kids that are tough on shoes wear through waterproofing quickly. It’s worth having something on hand to up the water resistance mid-season.
• Boot dryer – I have used this exact one on my floor vents (with fan air, not heat) for years. If you don’t have floor vents you can use an electric dryer. It has SAVED us because nobody likes putting on cold, wet shoes.

My oldest son has been wearing Vivobarefoot snow boots for the past 7 years. They’ve been the only pair he’s needed for rain, snow, mud, and cold weather. I love that they come in a huge size range from toddlers all the way to big kids. This year the Tracker AT boot has extra insulation, including a felt-lined insole (finally!)

The outsole has good traction that’s meant for all terrain, complete with a toe guard to prevent inevitable wear. And the top cinches down to seal out snow and keep them securely on foot. If you live in a very cold climate, you may consider using a sheepskin or wool insole in place of the Vivobarefoot one for more warmth.

Vivobarefoot has additional kids boots that all have functional outsoles and some protection from the elements if you don’t need as robust of a boot.

• Slightly small because of the thick insulation – my son and Samantha’s son both need one size bigger than their sneaker size in them.
• Best for medium to wide width. They have a solid shape, but they’re not extra wide.
• Best for medium volume. They may be tight over the top of the foot on high volume kiddos.

Shapen Frosty

This nylon boot is easy to pull on and has a generous toe box that should fit most kids’ foot shape. They are a good balance of light and flexible, with a practical outsole and protective toe guard. I also like that they are somewhat fitted through the ankle so that they aren’t floppy.

We love everything about them, except that they aren’t waterproof. For some families that may be alright, but for my kids it’s a dealbreaker. They only have one winter boot in their closet, and they simply spend too much time out in the snow for them to not be waterproof. If you are ambitious, you can waterproof them yourself!

Oh Wildling Shoes, how we love your sock like feel and cozy warmth! These are another big favorite in our house because they are so lightweight and comfortable, but surprisingly warm and weather resistant.

I recommend choosing the models made entirely of wool (upper and lining) for the most warmth, and adding a wool insole to your order. This combo keep my kids and myself cozy and dry. You’d be amazed at how practical a shoe this minimal can be! However they aren’t snow boots, so you can still get snow in the top and if you spend long hours in wet conditions water will likely get through.

Wildling’s winter models tend to change each year. For the 2025-2026 season the Koselig, Atento, and Kindur Sten are all made of wool and are great for shorter outings or less extreme winter days.

Softstar Phoenix

Leather & Sheepskin | Custom Color Options | Sizes US 7C-4Y

The Softstar Phoenix is a supremely cozy sheepskin boot, handmade in Oregon. I wear the Phoenix in adult sizes, and the quality is excellent. They are luxurious boots for serious warmth! You can choose custom colors, which my son loved. The lower portion is made of smooth leather and naturally water resistant, but the shaft of the boot is suede and water can soak through. For my rough and tumble kiddo, this proved to be an issue. So for serious snow play I recommend using something like SnoSeal on the upper.

Another thing to note is that they have a side zipper but otherwise can’t be adjusted. My son liked to wear these without socks (one of the beautiful things about genuine sheepskin!), and after the leather broke in they were a little floppy on him. He walked right out of them into the snow once! So while they are delightfully warm, they work better with socks or for thick, high volume feet.

Be Lenka has a new line of kids winter shoes out this year that we have been testing for you. They have a generous toe box shape, are waterproof, insulated, and functional for winter activities. But we find them quite stiff this year, and wish the outsole was lighter and more flexible. For some families this will still be a good option, but our kids testers are kind of clomping around in them.

The Ailo boot is very thick and insulated. It has a velcro closure, and a higher volume fit. I wish they had some adjustability over the arch, but like how warm they are. The Zippu is an alternative with velcro closures for a more secure fit. They are not as insulated, but will work for lighter snow and rain play.

Feelgrounds has kids vegan Chelsea and lace up boots with a warm microfiber lining. They’re not snow boots or as warm as some others here, but they will keep your kid cozy and dry in a lot of weather. The Patrol boot (left) has a waterproof membrane, while the Chelsea (right) is water-resistant.

They’re a little bit stiffer than I like in kids’ shoes, but durable and have good grippy tread on the outsoles. And they have the added bonus of looking a little dressier, so they can be worn both for outdoor use or to nicer occasions.

Zeazoo makes delightfully soft and light barefoot sheepskin boots for kids. While definitely not as rugged or durable as the more robust snow boots in this article, they make up for it in their extreme coziness. They are so light, flexible, soft and warm!

If you’re looking for a simple pull on boot in the style of Uggs, the Zeazoo Dingo is it. Just know that the simple construction doesn’t lend itself to rough wear. They’re more like super warm slippers!

I love that the Ensilumi has adjustability with the elastic lacing system, but they are still easy to pull on and off. Saguaro has a number of more affordable kids winter boots and shoes in the full size range. The Will is one of our favorite because they are really wide, soft, and flexible and come in at about $50 after my coupon code. But they are not water resistant and the materials are a synthetic fabric so get wet easily. My kids use them when they don’t need a full snow boot, but want to be warm.

Ten Little has these cute and functional snow boots for toddlers and little kids! The main body is an insulated polyester material that reminds me of a puffer jacket. They can cinch closed at the top with a elastic toggle strap and the entire boot shaft opens with a large velcro closure on the side. They’re easy enough for my 4 year to put on himself! I was delighted to discover the outsole on these has some grippy lugs, too.

These are $60 and only available up to size 13, but we have hope that Ten Little will expand the size range for these in the future.

Jan and Jul

With holiday season and cold weather fast approaching I am ready to cozy up with warm tootsies. You would think it goes without saying that a house slipper would have plenty of toe space, but so many of the ones I’ve tried over the years have been tight in the toes while sliding off my heel! If you’ve struggled to find actually comfortable slippers, you’re in the right place.

Here are my tried-and-true ACTUALLY wide foot-shaped slippers that won’t pinch your feet so you can be cozy and comfy all winter long.

The Best Barefoot Slippers

I work from home doing all the barefoot shoe things, so slippers are kind of a must-have for me. Especially because I live in the Midwest where it’s cold half the year! I have worn these so much since I got them one year ago! They are light, soft, and comfy, and fit my lower volume feet well. These have a grippy rubber bottom, which can be handy if you need grip on your floors. Justin also wears them and we both love them to pieces.

I really love my slippers to be secure and not floppy – a common problem for my low volume feet and narrow heels. So it’s great news that these Pantufa slippers stay secure on my feet. And of course the fact that they are both breathable and warm is fabulous.

Sizing & Fit:

• Runs slightly small – I sized up to a 38 and they work great with a pair of socks. I’ve also tried a 37 and they fit best without socks (size 37 is on me in the pics here).
• Medium to wide width – these are unstructured and flexible, so the material spreads out with my foot. No pressure points at all!
• Medium to low volume – they can stretch some for high volume feet (the opening is elasticized), but could be tight on high arches.

Zeazoo sheepskin slippers are so fluffy!! They are also incredibly warm for how light and soft they are. Truly like clouds for your feet. You can find a few different cuts and variations from Zeazoo, depending on your fit and style preferences. The Dolly (above right) is quite high volume, so my heel slips a little if I wear them barefoot. For that reason the Dingo (left) is a better slipper option for me.

All are delightful on wintry days! But probably not best for people who run hot, because they really are so warm.

These are so dang comfy, I wear my Kingdom of Wow slippers in both high and low cut all the time. The lightweight version (75% New Zealand wool and 25% botanical fibers) is not as warm as the others and can be worn a lot of the year. The cozier slippers (65% New Zealand wool and 35% botanical fibers) are thicker and warmer, but still light. They have taken the shape of my feet and are just so easy to wear!

I tend to reach for the slip-ons most often because they are the easiest to put on and work great almost year round. One pair of my KOW slippers is two years old and even after all that use they are still in great condition. They’ve stretched some, but not excessively, and you can put them in the washing machine when dirty.

Sizing & Fit:

• Slightly small when new – I have a Women’s 7.5-8 (a size bigger than I would normally take) in all mine, and they are a good fit with a pair of socks.
• Wide width – the shape conforms to your foot, so they are adaptable for a lot of different shapes. Extra wide feet may spill over the sides.
• All volumes – they work on my low volume feet, and will stretch to fit higher volume feet (but might be snug at first)

I have been wearing this same pair of slippers the last 5 or 6 years – they are incredibly comfortable and high quality and very roomy. Over the years they’ve stretched out and now are a little floppy if I wear them without socks, but still perfect with cozy socks. And you can replace the insoles because the sheepksin can get flat after years of wear.

They come in two widths, and the wide is extra wide friendly. Mine are a size 5u (women’s 6) wide, which is on the smaller end of what I would normally choose for a slipper. But they are still plenty roomy and I definitely wouldn’t size up. New this year – Softstar now makes a rubber bottom version called S’More!

Softstar also has the Merino Zen slipper, which is a felted wool. They are a nice house shoe! My son likes them.

These felted wool slippers are the only ones on this list that step-in friendly (hands free!) and come in the entire size range from little kids to large men’s sizes. The wool is thick and warm, and the outsoles are just grippy enough to not be slippery but still quiet on my floors.

They are on the higher volume side and I like to pair them with one of their wool insoles (does not come included) for a better fit. Even still, they’re a little floppy on my low volume feet and I prefer to wear them while reclining but not walking around. They will work best for people who want that hands-free feature and have higher volume feet.

• Runs big. I tried a 38 first and they were way too big. Now I have a 37 and I still have lots of room and can wear socks with them.

Xero Pagosa Cozy

These fleece slippers are so cozy, they’re like a warm fleece for your feet. They also have a rubber bottom and a collapsible heel for quick slide in if you don’t want to put them fully on. They fit both Justin and me really securely, and are so soft. If you are looking for a cheaper alternative to the sheepskin and wool options here that is still warm and structured, this is the best one. Overall pretty big fan!

You can get the regular Pagosa too if you want a house shoe that isn’t so warm. Justin has been wearing his religiously for the past few years.

Samantha has these knit slippers and loves them! They have a bit more cushion to the sole when brand new, but it compresses with just a couple wears (and some people might like that extra squish!). They are also a good price point for a cozy wide toe box slipper.

The knit uppers are stretchy and the soles are super flexible with plenty of grip for indoor use. They’re also sustainably made with deadstock yarn and they’re machine washable! We recommend the Verloop slippers with backs for a secure fit. Oh, and the fun prints and colors are a win.

Lems Drifter Fur (US) – Cozy lined slip-ons with rubber outsole for either indoor or outdoor use and optional collapsible heel. Justin loves them! They also look cool. Find Men’s Drifter Fur here

Luks Barefoot Slippers (EU) – These wool-lined slippers come in two widths and have loads of toe space for even square shaped feet. Runs large and high volume.

High Plains (US) – These are a nice handmade sheepskin slipper, but best for high volume feet/thicker ankles because the ankle opening is wide. Justin slips out of them.

Kyrgies (US) – The Wovens are my favorite. The Slides are also zero drop (others are not). These ones are also not super secure on the foot, so best for reclining or for those with thicker feet.

Posh Panda (CA) – Multiple sole options including “soft sole” which is a leather bottom. They can be a simple leather house shoe, or you can add a sheepskin insole for more of a slipper feel. Read my Posh Panda review for details!

Baa Lamb Slippers (New Zealand) – You can also order via their Instagram. We have not tried these personally, but they look good so far.

Manitobah (CA) – This indigenous owned brand makes slippers with a good square toe box shape. Best for high volume, thick feet.

Crafted from sturdy yet lightweight rubber that is vegan-friendly, the Ranidae boots are robust without being heavy or clunky. They have a thin microfiber lining so you don’t have rubber directly on your skin, and I love the functional grippy outsole.

They are more structured than a packable rain boot which means they don’t fold up tiny for your backpack. But the upside is that the rubber is more durable and the boots maintain their upright shape.

The Ranidae boots come in both kids and adult sizes. Starting tomorrow September 6th, you can get green, orange, and yellow in all sizes! And the word on the street is that there are even more color options coming this fall.

At $99 a pair for adults and $69 for kids, the Ranidae is not overly expensive (at least these days…), especially considering that their sturdy construction means they will last you for many, many rainy days to come. And even more importantly – Wildling has announced it will be covering the import fees for their US customers, so you can now order without any surprises.

What I Love About Them

The Wildling Raniadae achieves something I previously thought was impossible in the rain boot sector: they’re easy to slip-on, but they hug your ankle on the sides so that they’re not flopping around. These boots are still high volume (we’ll get into that more later), but are shaped to be as secure as possible.

They have, IMO, the best fit and toe box shape of any barefoot rain boot on the market. They are also definitely the highest quality, with the best traction. Ranidae is even Samantha-approved as being extra wide friendly!

This is a rarity in wide toe box rubber boots, both for kids and adults.

Sizing & Fit

This is applicable to both the kids and the adult models!

• Runs slightly large – All the toe room makes them feel roomy. I sometimes size up to a 38, but a 37 is plenty big for me in Ranidae.
• Wide to extra wide toe box – Spacious enough for natural splay on most foot shapes.
• High volume – Even though the sides hug your ankles, there is a lot of vertical space in these. There’s also no removable insole, but adding your own is easy and I recommend it for low and medium volume feet.
• Suitable for many calf widths – These have a wide opening.

If you know you have lower volume feet, I’d definitely suggest adding an insole to your Wildling order. They are all great. Felty is quite thick and warm, Woolly is a thinner option that’s still cozy.

Wildling also has a cozy 98% wool sock that pairs perfectly with their Ranidae boots and is anatomically shaped with toe space (shop the Calor socks in the EU here).

I have worn mine with those socks, but I really prefer toe socks so I most often wear a wool toe sock liner with leg warmers over the top of them. Leg warmers also help the boots fit more securely without flopping, which is helpful in rain boots that don’t have laces or adjustments.

Barefoot boots are the only way to keep my feet happy in the fall/winter seasons. I just can’t handle scrunched toes and clunky rigid soles! If you also hate stuffing your feet into uncomfortable boots you are in the right place. Thank goodness there are practical and stylish wide toe box boots that let your feet move naturally, and still protect you from the elements – your feet and body will thank you!

In this article I share my top ten favorite barefoot boots after years of testing on myself and many others. It has all the up to date information on what’s new and coming, and there are options with cushion if you only want the wide toe box! So read on to see the best barefoot boots for every day wear in the fall and winter.

Why I Wear Barefoot Boots

I wear barefoot boots because:

1. They are only type of boot I’ve found that has a truly anatomical toe box shape (not pointy and tapered like most boots) and after years of chronic foot pain I just need that!
2. They help me feel more stable in the elements because they are lower to the ground and flexible – I can control my body more easily than in thick, stiff boots.
3. And the thin sole is optional – There are barefoot boots with some cushion and support, and you can use insoles in most of the others! You can also find here a few more Wide Toe Box, But Not Barefoot boots.

A couple other tips: I highly recommend getting comfortable with your insole options! They can really increase the usefulness of your barefoot boots by adjusting fit, warmth, and cushioning levels. What I Love About Them: Peerko boots were instant love as soon as I laid eyes on them. And 5 years later, still my most worn! They’re the most stylish and versatile barefoot boots I have, not to mention they’re lightweight and have a wide forefoot. They tend to fit people really well while looking great! The Go model is continually the best selling boot we carry at Anya’s Shop.

They have different cuts of boots with different linings for different degrees of warmth, so you can get something right for your climate. The lace up boots are my go to, but I also love their tall boots for dressier outfits. They’re all so easy to wear with my outfits, dang comfy and look equally classy on both men and women.

A few other tidbits – I use Renapur’s on them to keep the leather sleek and shiny through the season. The outsole is meant for everyday use and is not a rugged winter outsole (if that’s what you’re looking for, head to my practical winter boots guide or read on). And they have vegan options!

• True to size – I am wearing my usual size 37 in most of my Peerko boots, but I size up in the wool lined Frost (which I always do in boots with warm linings!).

What I love About Them: Be Lenka has a very versatile selection of barefoot boots, ranging from dressy and stylish to rugged and warm. All are quite practical with durable slip-resistant outsoles and they have a good fit with a wide toe box.

Besides having so many options, Be Lenka boots stands out for their top notch quality. They’re my go to when I need something functional that has plenty of space for my toes. Just be aware that the soles on Be Lenka boots are a little heftier than you might be used to with barefoot shoes. What I Love About Them: The Vivobarefoot Gobi boots were my very first barefoot winter boot back in 2017 and I used the heck out of them! They wore like a dream, and I love that Vivobarefoot boots look kinda urban and cool. I love the Hiber – they’re like a puffy jacket for your feet! And they have a dressy looking chelsea boot coming this year!

Vivobarefoot boots all have grippy outsoles and high quality uppers, but tend to be on the stiffer side when brand new. I’ve found that they take a bit to break in but then are soft, flexible AND durable.

And I learned the hard way that Vivobarefoot boots aren’t very warm unless you swap out the insole for a better one (check out my insoles guide for how to fix this). But overall we’ve had great luck with the quality and longevity of our pairs.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• Runs slightly long, but I wear my usual size. Exception is the Waterproof boots which fit snugger.
• Average width – the Hiber and Explorer Mid have the most forgiving fit and fit my wide feet well. The Gobi boot is on the narrow side for me.
• Medium to low volume

Lems Shoes

What I Love About Them: Lems Shoes has some really great barefoot boots with a little bit more cushion than the other brands listed here. I especially love the Chelsea boot and the waterproof Boulder Boot Grip is excellent for rain and mud. This winter you can expect some new tactical boots from Lems!

The thicker sole makes Lems a good brand for people who want more cushion or for days when your feet need a break. I also love that Lems have a lot of vertical space above the big toe. Plus, the look is classic and cool. Justin and I both love our Lems and wear them quite a lot during the cold months.

Note that not all Lems Shoes have the same shape. I recommend choosing their Wide or Widest models (they have a fit guide for each listing).

Sizing & Fit:

• Runs small in our experience – I usually go up a size in my Lems boots.
• Fits wide or extra wide feet if you choose Wide or Widest!
• Higher volume – I usually need to add extra insoles or socks, because I have low volume feet.

What I Love About Them: Xero Shoes makes several practical barefoot boots for fall and winter with a classic aesthetic. New this fall is the Breckenridge which I am really enjoying in black. The fit is super comfortable and they style well. Justin loves the Denver boots. But they cater to an average to narrow toe box width and a wide midfoot, which means they aren’t a great brand for my foot type.

But they are a favorite for people who are new to barefoot shoes because they tend to have a lower price point than other brands and a wide range of options. They also have a huge fall/winter sale that’s worth checking out!

Sizing & Fit: We find Xero to run true to size mostly for Justin, but I size up more often than not in their boots. In general when a boot is waterproof or lined it fits more snugly, so if you have wide feet I would also suggest sizing up in Xero. They also fit fairly high volume.

What I Love About Them: Wilding Shoes is another brand that makes me giddy. All of their models are fabric with an extremely flexible sole and one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn! You wouldn’t expect it because of how lightweight they are, but the Wildling winter models made of wool are pretty warm and with an extra wool insole feel great for most of the winter.

They’re also more durable and practical than you would think. The water resistance is enough for some rain and snow, and I find that I love wearing them on nature walks and light hikes so I can feel all the texture beneath me.

Sizing & Fit Type: I highly recommend you consult their size finder when ordering instead of ordering your usual size. Each model comes with a specific fit guide, so make sure you read that as well. Typically Wildlings cater to an average width foot, but there are always a few that work for extra wide feet.

You can expect your Wildling Shoes to have a squared off toe box so the outer toes don’t get squished and a flexible outsole that can adapt to a wide variety of foot shapes. They do tend to fit high volume feet best – if you have shallow feet I would recommend getting the wool insole for a better fit (works great for us!).

P.S. Some people are surprised by how long their Wildings are – this is intentional and as long as the shoe is secure and not flopping the extra length shouldn’t be an issue.

Mukishoes

What I Love About Them: Mukishoes is another extremely flexible and lightweight barefoot shoe brand with genuine ground feel. While not quite as flexible or “second-skin” like as Wildling shoes, they are more mainstream looking so I end up reaching for my Mukishoes a ton throughout the season. They feel so great and also look fashionable!

You can find Mukishoes barefoot boots seasonally, usually around September each year. They have high top sneakers, wool lined combat style boots, chelsea boots and I love all of them! We carry our favorites at Anya’s Shop.

Sizing & Fit Type: Mukishoes has an average width toe box, but the flexible outsole and soft upper accommodates some wider feet.

For me the chelsea boots fit slightly smaller than other brands (because the ankle opening pushes your foot a little forward) but the lace ups are pretty true to size. This is a brand that works great for high volume feet, so I wear an insole in all of my pairs because I have low arches and skinny ankles.

Zaqq Barefoot

What I Love About Them: Zaqq barefoot boots look amazing, they honestly have the widest selection of barefoot boots I’ve ever seen. And they are still soft and comfortable on foot. Like Peerko, they seem to have a universal fit that works well and looks great on most people!

My personal favorites are the Riquet and Equity – both very sleek. They’re a wonderful blend of mainstream style with really soft, flexible soles. We carry several styles in the US for easier access, because the Zaqq website is difficult to navigate for people outside the EU. This fall, we are also carrying a new style, the Qlare, that I am pretty excited about!

Sizing & Fit Type: Zaqq shoes are pretty much smack in the middle in terms of fit. Slightly wider than Vivobarefoot, they fit an average to wide feet, medium to high volume.

Some of their dress models have a more tapered toe box, so I recommend looking at the product images closely to avoid that. But the vast majority of their shoes have a natural shape to them.

What I Love About Them: These boots are fully leather, breathable, and flexible. They have a really nice fit with a generous toe box that is roomy in all directions (above the toes too!). The Kombat boot has a thicker outsole that looks cool and helps keep you farther from the cold ground. But it’s still super flexy. I really enjoyed them last season, because of how comfortable and stylish they are.

• Runs on the big side. I still wear 37, but have extra room.
• Extra wide toe box.

Groundies

What I Love About Them: Groundies does stylish barefoot boots for men and women very well. They have a few different available outsole types, but my two favorites for boots are the GO1 and the GX1. The GO1 is very flexible and has the widest fit, while the GX1 is a little thicker and more rugged – which can be nice for boots in the cold season. Both are high quality and long lasting.

Be aware that Groundies has three different toe box shapes – Regular, Barefoot, and Barefoot+ (extra wide). The “Regular” is tapered and a more traditional shape, so I recommend filtering by Barefoot or Barefoot+ so all you see are the foot shaped options.

Sizing & Fit Type: Groundies Barefoot models have an average width, but their Barefoot+ line is extra wide and runs a little longer in length than the same size in Barefoot width. Sizing is true and consistent otherwise, so not too many surprises between styles. The boots fit medium volume, but can often work for both high and low volume. I usually wear a size 37 in both widths of Groundies boots, but the Barefoot+ is roomier.

Runner Ups

The above are my top ten most worn barefoot boot brands for everyday style, but there are some other really great barefoot shoes that deserve a mention. And depending on your foot type and preferences, they might be perfect for you!

Rosa & Lila by Anya (me!)

I designed two wide toe box versions of a classic western ankle bootie that we carry at Anya’s shop called the Rosa (with side zipper) and Lila (pull-on chelsea). I wear them all the time because they style really well and look mainstream compared to a lot of barefoot shoes. I really wanted something more classic that didn’t squish my toes, so I just went ahead and made my own! The leather upper is really high quality and gets better with age, and the natural leather lining feels soft and breathable on the feet.

They do have a thicker, stiffer sole than a lot of the softer barefoot shoe brands, especially when brand new. The quality leather insole breaks in after a while, but they’ll never be as soft as some. For me this is an ok compromise when I want to dress up!

Sizing & Fit Type: They have a more average width with a higher volume upper. I use tongue pads in mine to get more security. Sizing is true.

What I Love About Them: Hands down my most comfortable barefoot boot is the Zeazoo Dingo – they feel like slippers and look like Ugg boots! I like that they are so light but still dang warm and slip on easily. And it’s not just me who loves them, they have been super popular at Anya’s Shop and around the world for people in all climates. They’re a dream!

But because of the sole type, they’re not great at keeping snow and water out and not as durable as some of the other options here. For me they are the perfect walking and quick-errands boot in the winter, but if you tend to drag your feet or kick curbs you might bust a seam.

Sizing & Fit Type: The Zeazoo Dingo has a wide straight fit and a plateau shaped toe box. They run big and many people size down (especially because the thick lining tamps down with use).

They are generous around the ankle and arch, so work well for high volume feet – but I did fine in them with my low volume feet and skinny ankles after sizing down one from my normal size. I also wear thick socks in them to bunch up around the ankle for a little more security. If you need bigger than a size 42 you can request a custom size from Zeazoo.

Feelgrounds

Feelgrounds is an all vegan brand with a couple boot option! The Patrol is lined with fleece, and they come with both a fleece and a cork insole. They also come with a grippy outsole for all-weather conditions, and are gusseted up to the ankle for waterproof-ness. They’re entirely vegan and have a pretty thick sole that some people find stiff. But for wintery weather they are practical! You can also find a chelsea boot in several colors from Feelgrounds.

Koel

Koel (previously a kids’ brand) has recently added several lovely women’s styles. They’ve been growing the last couple of years and we now carry the Koel Fiona (above right) in the US at Anya’s Shop! They fit an average foot best and are medium to low volume. I don’t need any fit hacks to get a good fit, but they are only just wide enough.

Gaucho Ninja barefoot boots are goodyear welted for durability and longevity. They are designed in the UK by Gaucho Ninja and completely handmade with vegetable tanned leather in Spain by a family-run artisan factory. There’s so much to love about these boots! The leather is beautiful and high quality giving these boots a substantial feel to them. The tongue is gusseted, but unlined so it doesn’t feel bulky.

Ahinsa

Ahinsa boots are really light, flexible, and have a wide forefoot – just what I like in a boot. They are also all 100% vegan. The uppers are naturally water resistant, and they wear really well. I have yet to see any scuffs or fading of the material even after lots of winter use.

Ahinsa shoes run a teensy bit shorter than most other barefoot boots, so I am kind of in between a 37 & 38. Both my Ahinsa barefoot boots are a size 37, but I wish I had gotten a 38 in the Winter model that has a fleece lining. The “Comfort” models from Ahinsa are all the same as the Barefoot ones, they just come with an insole that adds a heel lift and arch support (wouldn’t be truly barefoot with this).

Magical Shoes

Magical Shoes is a Polish brand that makes super flexible barefoot shoes. Their boots are super comfortable and lined with warm wool or fleece. They also have a lot of vertical toe space, so they tend to be a home run when it comes to the comfort for a lot of people. I find their sneakers and boots run quite small, so I recommend sizing up one in them.

Why Should Kids Wear Barefoot Shoes?

After my run-in with a chronic foot issue, I learned that the shoes we wear have a big impact on how our bodies feel. I’d like my children to avoid the issues I had, so we choose shoes that allow their feet to develop normally. That means they only wear barefoot kids shoes.

What Are Barefoot Kids Shoes?

“Barefoot” shoes are so-called because they let your feet move as if barefoot. Most shoes, even kids shoes, inhibit foot function with stiff soles, cramped toe-boxes, and heels that push your body into an unnatural position.

By contrast, barefoot kids shoes let their feet move naturally! This is especially important while their bodies are growing and developing. And don’t worry if your child has flat feet – this is normal and usually corrects itself over time if they continue using their foot muscles!

As a general rule, kids barefoot shoes are:

1. Foot shaped, with a wide toe box (won’t squish their toes)
2. Zero drop, or completely flat (for natural alignment)
3. Flexible enough to roll into a ball (so foot muscles stay strong and supple).

Unfortunately most shoes you find in stores do not meet this criteria. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist! There are dozens of kids barefoot shoe brands that offer options for every season and price range.

They come in the full range of sizes – from infant to big kids – and they offer every type of style (vegan options too). As an added bonus, they have a 100 day money back guarantee even if you’ve worn them outside. We get Vivobarefoot Primus sneakers and Lumi boots annually for my oldest son. He just doesn’t like to wear anything else if he can help it! This brand is a little more pricey than others, but my children are hard on their shoes so we appreciate the durability.

We do have a consistent stinkiness issue with our Vivo sneakers. This is best avoided by wearing socks, but my kids like to go barefoot in their shoes so we end up hand washing them occasionally with baking soda and vinegar. Scrub the insoles for the best results! Wildling Shoes are the most unique barefoot shoe for kids that I have come across, and they really feel like being barefoot because of the uniquely flexibly sole. We particularly love the Nittugo with a wool insole as a breathable non-stinky option – perfect for kiddos who won’t wear socks. The winter models are made with wool and are surprisingly warm for how light and thin they are (get an additional felt insole for max warmth).

But there are limits to the water resistance – they will get soaked if you stay in water long enough and then can be difficult to dry (I swear by my vent dryer!). And if used for rough play the sole can start to come undone and develop holes in the fabric upper over time – but they last much long than you would think for how light and flexible they are.

We love Wildling best for comfort and casual use, in that domain they are hard to beat.

Wildling works for a variety of foot types because the sole flattens out and molds to your foot shape. They’re also designed to leave plenty of space in front of the foot so your toes never touch. Wildling makes some of the best barefoot shoes for infants and toddlers.

Keep in mind that the fit varies by model, and models change seasonally so always read the sizing & fit description on Wildling’s website before purchasing. In general this brand fits medium width and high volume, so we usually get the extra insole for my son with low volume feet.

Shapen’s barefoot kids shoes are adorable, sturdy, and have lots of toe room. They also come with removable insoles, and we’ve found that they have a solid fit that works well on many kids’ feet. They’re also freaking cute, and the color and even the glitter have held up well for our testers (I had a bunch of samples I shared with neighbors and friends to test for me).

Besides being on the pricier end, my only real complaint is that the sole isn’t as flexible as I prefer for young children (6 and below) whose bones are still developing. They’re great as a durable school shoe, but I prefer them for older kids.

Mukishoes is a slow fashion barefoot shoe brand that makes adorable kids barefoot shoes with extremely flexible outsoles – and bonus they are sustainably made. They have lots of vegan options and some lined boots in the fall & winter. We’ve never had them fall completely apart, but the thinner uppers take more of a beating than the more durable barefoot kids brands listed here. My kids still love them because they’re so comfy!

Another challenge with Mukishoes is that inventory changes seasonally and it can be hard to plan ahead. They do small batch production, often using limited quantity of materials, so you never know exactly what they’ll have available. Mini Moss is a perennial model and boots come back every fall, otherwise things change each season.

We love Splay because they meet all barefoot shoe requirements, are affordable, easy to get on and off, and lightweight. Our kids’ favorite is the Dash model, which has a cool look, good fit, and is durable. Splay also sells the Explore model which has a cheaper price point, but the canvas doesn’t hold up as well.

When my kids were younger the Explore was our go to, because their feet were growing and they trashed their shoes anyways, so we didn’t mind! But now that they’re a little pickier about style, the Dash is what they prefer.

• Wide toe box, but slim through the midfoot.

Over time Saguaro has become one of my kids’ favorite brands. The knit sneakers (above right) are really soft, comfortable, breathable, and have a generous toe box. For the price, we get a lot out of these shoes. They’ve also been adding more “cool” sneaker options over time that we’ve had pretty good luck with, but the velcro straps tend to fail while the rest of the shoe still has a lot of life left in them.

The materials are not as high quality as other brands’ listed here, but they’ve worked well for our needs and are a good balance between function and affordable.

Whitin, a really popular affordable adult option, now has a great inexpensive option in kids sizes! They are very roomy, have a nice grippy outsole, and a soft mesh upper. The heel collar is padded for comfort and the double velcro closures provides a secure fit. The only downside to these and that they do have a bit of toe spring.

• Slope, but it’s gradual so most foot types will fit.

Reima

Reima sneakers and sandals are excellent for the price. They have a good fit and feel, they’re durable, and my kids love them. All while still being quite a bit cheaper than many brands! Just note that they are on the slimmer side, so best for long thin feet and not wide feet.

If that’s your kid’s foto type, the Astelu is the perfect everyday shoe. They are soft and breathable (no stinky feet issues even when worn without socks), they pull on with elastic laces, and they have held up really well for us. We adjusted the knot on the elastic lace to tighten them a bit, and they’ve been perfect for my younger son who is constantly on the go.

We found our Reima shoes to run on the longer side and to be most suited for average to slightly wide feet. The Astelu sneakers have a wider fit than the Rantaan sandals – the sandals are average to slim in width.

Wildling is bringing the color this spring! The Borba has an orange/pink butterfly print that is so cheery and fun, I couldn’t resist. And it’s ultra light and soft. I have a size 37 and they are roomy and wide fitting, but not extra wide.

And we are also loving the Lago model. In small kid’s sizes it has a fun blue outsole and velcro straps.

But the biggest news from Wildling this spring is their rain boot. Ranidae (rainy day, get it?) is I think the highest quality rain boot we’ve seen in barefoot shoes to date. The toe box is also quite generous without being excessively floppy. They do run on the big side over all – I tried both a 38 and a 37, because I wear a size 38 in a number of Wildling shoes. But in these the 37 is plenty big, and I can even fit in the new thick wool socks also launching tomorrow.

For those of you wondering if they’re extra wide friendly – Samantha tried them on and they fit her too! So great news all around. You can check out the other wide toe box rain boots on the market here.

Rain boot pro tip: Because rubber boots have to be wide enough to get your foot inside, heel slippage is common. I rectify this with stirrup socks!

Vega Espadrilles

Vega Barefoot has been around for a few seasons, and they tend to have really fun and pretty styles. They operate on a preorder basis, which isn’t my favorite (I wish I could try them on before I shared about them!), but I have been wanting an espadrille shoe just like the ones they are offering! I ordered a size 37 and will share more info when I get them, in case there are still any in stock.

Based on my experience with past models, the fit on their Barefoot width is pretty standard and will be best for average width fit. If you are looking for extra wide, they do have some nice models that come in a Barefoot Plus width (not the espadrilles though)!

The quality on these is also medium – they are a cheaper option compared to other high end barefoot dress shoes. It’s a pretty good deal for EU folks! But the shipping cost of 45 Euros to the US kind of canceled out the cheaper base price for me. Again, the style is unique and so pretty, so I still had to have them!

Shapen Playa

Available now is another espadrille style from Shapen – the Playa. This will come in beige and navy, in two widths! Shown above is Regular width, so Wide will be best for those with extra wide feet.

Wildling Shoes Fall Review

For being so minimal and light, Wildling’s winter shoes are always surprisingly functional for the cold season. They are one of my daily favorite barefoot shoe brands through the fall and winter.

I love natural fibers on my feet, and I also love how transparent Wildling is about their materials and manufacturing process. This summer I had the opportunity to visit Wildlings in their home base in Overath, Germany and I got to check out these fall beauties ahead of time! So I am excited to finally be able to share my thoughts with you.

Are They Winterproof?

I live in the midwest where weather is harsh for many months, so my standards here are high. Wildling’s fall & winter models all have a built in water resistant lining, which is very helpful. But I still recommend against letting them get totally soaked through, because they can be difficult to dry once thoroughly wet.

The outsoles are also not especially grippy or slip resistant, so when it’s extra slick out they might not be the best option for that either. For both of these reasons I don’t recommend them for long stretches in rain or snow, or rugged terrain.

However, Wildling’s fall and winter shoes are perfect for both mild and cold temps, some rain and snow, and every day walking around town and in nature.

Warm Insoles

When it comes to warmth, the wool Wildlings are quite warm. If you want to increase that warmth even more, I highly recommend checking out their wool insoles! They have two options:

• Felty, which is thick and very warm.
• Wooly, which is thinner and more versatile because it doesn’t take up much space.

I love both, my whole family uses them as sock replacements because they are breathable and moisture wicking. And in the winter the Felty insoles increase the warmth by a significant amount. I also use them often because I have low volume feet!

Sizing & Fit

I always recommend using Wildling’s size guide and fit kit available on each product listing for the most accurate advice. But Wildling tends to fit an average to wide width foot best and might be too too slim for an extra wide foot. They always have a couple models that work well for extra wide feet, and Samantha (our lovely extra wide-footed shoe tester) is usually able to get a good fit by sizing up in Wildlings. I have a wide foot myself, but not extra wide, and most Wildlings work well for me.

They also tend to fit high volume, so if you are someone with a lower arch height they might feel really spacious over the top of your foot. I use insoles in almost all of my Wildlings to solve that problem (really low volume feet here!).

Tejo

This model has a canvas upper, wool lining, and water resistant inner membrane, like all of the fall winter models. I love the metal lace holders to give the appearance of a modern chunky boot, while still being basically a baby bootie for big feet.

The Tejo fits really high volume so I add an additional felt insole AND thick socks so I don’t have to tighten the laces as much. Because this model is water resistant, the tongue is attached and folds up as you cinch the laces. The bunching isn’t super comfortable, so the insoles make everything smoother.

I chose the caramel color which is like a burnt orange. It’s warm and spicy for fall!

Atmo

The Atmo Paprika is bright cotton canvas hi-top with a cotton lining and a membrane to make them water resistant. This model is an excellent transition shoe for fall when the weather is chilly in the morning but warm later in the day because the cotton is breathable and easy to wear.

I am a sucker for a good punch of color and these deliver! Wildlings are not an ideal fit for my extra wide feet, but I still find them comfortable because of how unstructured and flexible they are. They are a glove-like fit for me.

The Atmo also comes in an all-black color in the Essentials section, available year round.

Ciclo

The Ciclo is a low-cut wool sneaker with virgin wool lining. The uppers are made with wool from Black Welsh Mountain sheep and around 25% plant-based-dyed recycled wool. They are stunning! Even though the weather hasn’t totally turned fall-like yet, Robby has been wearing these to his office job and is a big fan. He says they’re like wearing upscale slippers to work! They run very slightly shorter than usual, so size up if you’re between sizes.

North Wolf

The North Wolf is an Essential model from Wildling, so you can expect it to be available year after year. And I am so glad, because it is such a great fall/winter staple. It’s got a wool lining and a wool upper, so it’s one of the warmest options from Wildling. If I add in some warm socks and a felt insole my feet are toasty warm down to about 15-20* F/-9 C.

This model fits wider than most Wildlings, so it’s a good option for wide feet. But it is definitely high volume too!

Lotus Slipper

The Lotus is a felted wool house shoe. It was first released last fall and I wore them a ton through the winter and spring. They are warm, moisture wicking, light, and I really like having a rubber outsole indoors so I wasn’t slipping on my hard floors.

The felt is also moldable, similar to the way leather molds. But they are not well-suited for extra wide feet. Samantha gave these ones a go and they were too narrow for her.

You can also now find a low cut version of this barefoot slipper, the Nelus.

Chestnut

The Chestnut is a rustic ankle boot with a warm fall vibe that we love for little and big feet alike. The upper is a wool/hemp blend and the inner lining is wool, making these a good option for cold weather. Chestnut boots also have a wider fit like the North Wolf. We love them as an everyday go-to shoe.

Arni

Arni is another Essential model made of denim in a neutral grey. They have a slightly stiffer feel to them (denim), and are not as cozy warm as many of the other Wildling fall/winter models but for temperate weather they are a solid basic. I like the monochrome look, and similar to a good pair of jeans the material gets softer as it gets worn in. With the water resistant membrane they work for transitional weather in both fall and spring!

The following models we’re covering are Essential Wildling shoes that you can find year round and aren’t necessarily good for the cold wet months of the year, but we still wear them year round because of how comfortable they are.

Tanuki

Tanuki is one of my favorite Wildling models. While hardly a winter shoe, it is nice that you can get them year round from Wildling. The material is extremely lightweight and breathable, so I actually wear them most often in the summer. They’re the shoe for people who hate shoes!

Nittugo

Like the Tanuki, the Nittugo has a barely-there feel. This model has a knitted wool upper that is stretchy and soft, so works better for wider feet than the Tanuki because it conforms to your foot shape. I wear mine a ton for traveling with an extra insole (without it the sole is so thin that I can be uncomfortable when doing lots of pavement walking). These might be my all time fave Wildlings!

Kami

The Kami is a slip-on shoe made of the same material as Tanuki (washi paper). They are feather light and easy to wear. They fit wider than most Wildlings, so if in-between I recommend sizing down. I wear one size down in my Wildling slip-ons. This helps them fit more securely on my feet as well, because the opening can be loose if you have thin heels and low arches.

I’m always excited to see what’s new with Wildlings! They make it possible to be cozy warm and dry but still feel like I’m barefoot.

Caring for Wildling Shoes

All models this season have an integrated membrane for water resistance. In addition, most models are also pre-treated with a waterproofing spray. That means your Wildlings are more functional for weather, Autumn weather! To maintain the water resistance, you can reapply waterproofing spray throughout the season.

Wildlings with 100% wool uppers should not get treated with any type of spray – they are naturally water repellent. The best way to clean your Wildlings up when they get dirty is to let them dry completely and then knock or brush any dirt off. I have found that the ones with wool uppers repel dirt pretty easily, but the fabric ones need more frequent brushing out of dirt. The new dense weave canvas cleans up beautifully!

Wildling just launched their Repair Center where you can have necessary repairs done to your Wildlings that are under warranty. Just contact customer service and they’ll give you next steps based on your individual needs.

Sizing & Fit

Thanks to the unique construction of Wildlings, they can fit a variety of foot shapes. They have a squared off toe box and the materials are really flexible. There’s nothing rigid about these shoes. I recommend using the Wildling Fitkit to find your size and referencing each model’s sizing notes on the product page. You can also use the EU/US size conversion chart that has recommended foot lengths (this was updated in April 2022 so if you’ve ordered previously make sure you check the new conversions).

Yew

$119-$149 | Wool Lined | Water Resistant Membrane | Sizes US Kids 7 to W 14 / M 13.5

The most water repellent model Wildlings has ever produced is Yew. It has a more rugged hiking boot vibe thanks to the ring eyelets and extra long laces meant to be wrapped around the ankle. I found it a little tricky to thread the laces through the tab on the heel, but it’s not necessary to pull them back out each time. There’s plenty of length to loosen the laces and leave them threaded!

The uppers are a very densely woven cotton canvas (in the perfect olive green shade!) that helps keep water out. Inside you’ll find felted wool which adds another layer against the elements. To top it all off, there’s also a integrated membrane AND water flap to give these the best chance possible at keeping your feet dry! Just remember these are water resistant and not waterproof and should not be expected to function as such.

Overall Yew feels slightly more substantial than Wildling models I’ve worn previously, and also roomier. I think they are fantastic. I love the aesthetic, the functionality, and the feel. Like all Wildlings, they’re super lightweight, flexible, and have excellent ground feel. You cannot find a more minimal boot for cool weather.

Chestnut

$79-$139 | Wool & Hemp | Water Resistant Membrane | US Sizes Kids 3 to W 14 / M 13.5

Are these the cutest shoes in the entire world? Quite possibly. Just look at them! They are precious! The uppers are a gorgeous blend of undyed wool and hemp and they are lined with wool too. They open up nice and wide, are easy to put on, and the laces give a secure fit. I don’t usually use shoes that tie with my little babies, but these are so adorable I don’t mind the extra minute it takes! You can swap them for elastic laces if you want, too.

The outsole on the toddler sizes (EU 18-22 or US 3-6) is slightly different. Same material, same wild flexibility, but there’s no split on the bottom and no wrap around on the toe or heel.

Modeled here on my 8 month old, I purposely got a size larger for room to grow. He isn’t close to walking yet so the extra length isn’t an issue and there’s plenty of room for a Wildling Wooly Insole and even socks when the temps drop further. I am hopeful they’ll still fit in the spring when should be walking!

Chokeberry

I opted for Chokeberry this season because I wanted a pair of Wildlings that was wool inside and out so I could wear them through the winter. For what essentially feels like a slipper, they are surprisingly functional. The internal membrane makes them water resistant, and the addition of a wool insole means I can comfortably wear them down to about 20F/-7C.

They also fit extra wide, so I have plenty of space for warm socks in them in my usual size. The cool petrol green color has a neutral look to them but still add a bit of color. Like all my Wildlings, I expect them to be a go-to this cool season.

Another wool-on-wool option for the cold season is North Wolf.

Pine

For my oldest son I picked Pine. These shoes are made of an organic cotton/linen blend and have the internal membrane for water resistance. They are neutral and subtle with only a few details in the laces and the inside pattern.

My son likes everything blue and refuses to wear shoes that aren’t completely soft, so Wildling is a natural choice for him. The Pine is not as warm as the wool options, so works best as a transitional fall shoe.

I am always smitten with the cold weather options from Wilding and this year is no exception. There’s some great new features, more protection from the elements, and a more durable canvas. All without compromising the amazing flexibility and lightweight construction they’re known for.

Wildling Spring Summer ’22 Collection

Wildling Shoes is a lifestyle barefoot shoe brand that specializes in the lightest, airiest shoes you’ve ever tried. They really feel like being barefoot! Wildling also has a social conscience and runs an ethical workplace using sustainable production & materials. To top it all off they’ve captured a whimsical aesthetic that is both unique and stylish at the same time. Suffice it to say, I’m a fan. And they now have both an EU and US location, so are even more accessible worldwide.

Seasonal models and colors are launched a few times a year, and you can find a Basic Collection of popular styles that are available year round. Today we’re covering models from the Spring Summer ’22 Collection, with a few beloved Basics thrown in.

The Rundown

All Wildling Shoes models are unisex and come in kids and adult sizes. Many come in baby/toddler sizes as well! This spring they are focusing even more intently on sustainable materials that are good for the body and the environment. Everything is vegan in their warm weather collection (but they do use wool in many of their Autumn/Winter models). And all have an extremely thin, flexible sole and square shaped toe box. I have yet to be unhappy with a shoe from Wildling, they are always delightful. *Models from the spring collection are all 4mm thick.*

General Sizing & Fit

In years past Wildling had a narrow-ish shape, but recent collections have been leaning toward a wide fit. So far everything I have personally tried and learned about from the Spring ’22 collection fits wide and true to size – but always check Wildling’s “Fit” section for more info before buying (see below their own description of this season’s sizing). The most unique thing about Wildling Shoes is they are built on a sole that can flatten out in any direction, making it highly adaptable to most foot types.

These shoes are made in EU sizes, so if shopping on the US website it’s important to check their size conversion chart to see how they are translating to US sizes. Fortunately I already knew I wore a size EU 37 in Wildling, so I was used the table to find the corresponding US size. Wildling has adjusted this recently, so always a good idea to double check. If in doubt, I recommend their Size Finder to determine the correct length for your foot.

Now let’s dig deeper into a few models that I love from the Spring Summer Collection.

Saiga

The Saiga is a surprise release from Wildling and their first slip on shoe. It’s made of the same material as the Tanuki (you can read about that model later on in this article) and is just the lightest most minimal shoe ever. They come in the moss green I have and a navy blue. I feel like I should be padding around a monastery or meditation retreat in these, they have a very unique and natural aesthetic to them.

There is a little elastic piece on the inside where the material crosses over so you have a little stretch there if you need it. And the interior is lined with a soft fabric that makes them even more comfortable inside than the Tanuki.

Fit Type: The Saiga is the only Wildling shoe I’ve ever gotten a size 36 in, so they do run a little big. I would say about a half size, so not everyone will need to size down. They also fit medium volume over the arch. I have low volume feet, so sizing down made sense. I still have some extra space around the ankle opening, but they stay on my foot well (most likely because they’re so light and flexible). If you have high volume feet I would stick with your usual size and not size down.

The width is medium wide, maybe even extra wide if you don’t size down.

Manul

Available February 5th | Sizes EU 18-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

The Manul is made of 100% unbleached and undyed European linen. Even metal eyelets were forgone in favor of cotton stitching to make a natural, breathable shoe made of sustainable materials. The linen feels sturdy and a teensy bit rough at first, but broke in after just 30 minutes of wear. They have a clean, natural look that is really versatile, and I’m just so excited about them!

These are fairly new to me, so I haven’t had much chance to get them dirty. I imagine that the natural coloring of the linen will disguise some dirt, but that over time these will need to be washed. I plan to hand wash them in the sink with clear soap, which is how I clean my natural hemp Unshoes. You can also spray them with a protectant.

Fit Type: The Manul fits wide. And considering the sole can flatten out under foot and allow for lots more space as the linen breaks in, I think these could also work for extra wide feet. They have a medium volume fit, but should easily work for both high and low volume with the laces.

The Manul is yet another step toward sustainability by Wildling, and I would love to see it become part of the permanent collection!

Kul

Available February 5th | Sizes EU 18-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

Next up is the Kul – I couldn’t resist the periwinkle blue (Pantone color of the year!). It is bright and springy, but sophisticated. This model is made from a blend of organic cotton and organic linen in a “fantasy weave” that gives it a diamond texture. Like the Manul there is no microfiber used on the upper, it is made purely of breathable natural materials.

I anticipate these ones being a little fussier than the Manul in terms of keeping clean – cotton seems to attract dirt more than linen – so I have sprayed them with Carbon Pro before wearing. If you’d like to shop all in one place, Wildling also sells shoe care products. These shoes aren’t recommended to be washed (the color could run), but you can brush out dry dirt or spot clean with a rag as needed.

Fit Type: Almost the exact same as the Manul!

Tanuki Kokoro

Available February 5th | Sizes EU 23-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

The Tanuki models from Wildling are my absolute favorite. The first time I tried them I was confused by the texture – Tanukis are made of Washi paper and have a rough texture that crinkles when you rub it together. But once they were on my feet I understood why they were such a popular model. They are so light and breathable they literally feel like nothing! I have taken my first pair of Tanukis (now a year old) with me on many adventures hiking, camping & walking and I honestly expected them to fall apart because they feel so “barely there.” But a year later not a stitch is out of place. Even though my first pair is still in mint condition I had to try the Kokoro because I love the color so much.

Tanuki’s come back every spring in new colors, and they can also be found in the Basic collection. They even work as a water shoe because the water drains out easily! I did notice that when I hand washed my red Tanuki’s the water turned red. It didn’t affect the appearance of the shoe, but just be careful about staining other things if your colored shoes get wet.

Fit Type: Tanuki’s fit slightly narrower than the above Manul and Kul. I would describe them as being more medium wide, catering to an average width foot. The Washi paper doesn’t stretch out, so there is also less chance of them “breaking in” than the other cotton/linen models. My wide toe splay fills up the toe box width almost completely, but I am still very comfortable in them. As far as volume, they really work for almost any volume. I find that they cinch up around my low volume feet like a glove, but many people with high volume feet also have great success.

Feather Forest

Available February 26th | Sizes EU 18-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

The Feather is Wildling’s only sandal model and is available this spring in Forest green, Plum purple and black. I must admit, I have never tried the Feather before because they don’t match my style well. They have a very unique look. But there are so many big fans of the Feather that I decided I better get acquainted! I understand now what people like in them – they go on in a flash with a velcro strap and feel like wearing nothing at all – just like other Wildling shoes, but with an open sandal cut for even more air flow. I still won’t wear them for fashion, but I can see myself enjoying them as a summer hiking sandal.

This is another model that comes back each year in new colors, and you can always find it in black in the Basic collection. The straps on the Feather are made of a strong microfiber that has a teensy bit of stretch to it but it doesn’t change shape over time. It fits securely to the foot so that when you step and move the shoe moves with you – again, like all of Wildling shoes. So if you are someone who has trouble with sandals staying put, the Feather might be for you.

Fit Type: I decided to try an EU 36 in these, since I often wear a size smaller in sandals than in close toed shoes. This ended up being a mistake, the 36 (shown in these pictures) is too small and my toes go all the way to the front and hang off the sides. So I’m exchanging them for a 37, the same size I wear in all my other Wildling shoes. They do mention that the Feather fits a little snug, but somehow I missed that. Oops! The velcro is fairly long, so you have multiple inches of space to work with if you need a high or low volume fit.

*I now have the size 37 and they fit perfectly!*

Tengri

Available February 26th | Sizes EU 23-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

The Tengri is a brand new cut never before used at Wildling with a top stitching detail. It is meant to reduce the amount of materials needed, and be more comfortable because there are fewer seams. We got these in a size 29 for my little guy, and I have been swooning over them in that little size. They’re so flippin’ cute!

He has thick feet, so we avoid high top shoes (he can’t get them on himself). These Tengris were so easy for him to get on and off, and the kids’ sizes come with elastic laces and a toggle option. He did complain about the tongue bunching (since it is attached on the sides) and pressing on his foot, but he was still happy in them. They’re so soft and flexible, I was jealous!

Fit Type: No surprises here, they fit exactly as expected. This model works well for wide, chunky feet.

Tanuki Basics

Available Year Round | Sizes EU 23-48 | Vegan | Removable Insole

These Tanukis are exactly like the Tanuki Kokoro written about above, just in basic colors that are available year round! My oldest son is very particular about shoes – they have to be very light and comfortable or he simply won’t wear them. The Tanuki Umi is turning out to be a great choice for him (that he actually wears!). And of course, you already know how I feel about Tanukis.

The main reason I decided to test the off-white Niji model was to see how dirty they got with wear and if they could be cleaned easily. It appears that the Washi paper repels dirt so they don’t get stained readily, and I was able to knock out any dirt out. For a white shoe, it’s a good deal. But I’ll be giving the Niji more dirt exposure when it warms up a little (because I’ve heard that over time they can turn yellow-ish)

Flying Fox

Available Year Round | Sizes EU 23-48 | Vegan

The Flying Fox is a black high top shoe available in the Basics collection. They have a high top sneaker look, and are a great replacement for Vans or Converse style shoes. These are made of 100% organic cotton so as to be breathable even in warm weather. The material is soft from the get go. This is the only model listed here that does not have a removable insole.

Fit Type: I have found that most high top models from Wildling fit high volume and I need an additional insole to keep them from feeling floppy. Others have also reported that switching the laces out for elastic ones helps them fit more securely as well. I moved the insole from another pair of Wildlings and they fit me great now (they are pictured above with insole). They have a wide fit as well, but slightly narrower than the Manul and Kul.

In Summary

In my opinion Wildling has gotten significantly better with time. They have widened their shape, begun a Basics collection so favorites will always be available, and continually nail the perfect color scheme for the season. While it’s somewhat tortuous to never know what beauties they’ll come up with next (do I buy now, or will something more perfect come along later????), I am always excited by their seasonal collection. The Spring Summer ’22 Collection from Wildling Shoes was a home run for me.

Wildling Shoes are a favorite in our house. They have a lot going for them; a unique look, dedication to sustainability, good company ethics. Not to mention their light-as-air feeling! My 9 year old tested out these colorful, water-repellent shoes for us this spring. Read on for our review of the Wildling Pegasus!

Wildling Pegasus Review

Wildling Pegasus | $71-$123 | Vegan | Water Resistant | Sizes EU 18-48

Practical and in a stunning blue fabric, the Pegasus can by worn the whole family. It’s available in EU sizes 18 (the baby style is called Pony) all the way up to EU 48. The mid-cut height is a style that can be worn almost year-round!

Waterproof?

It’s possible the Wildling Pegasus are the lightest water-resistant shoes out there. They aren’t waterproof, so they are not a replacement for rubber boots, but they have an integrated membrane between the outer and inner fabrics that is really effective! The construction also features “water flaps” which means the tongue is sewn to the sides near the eyelets.

My daughter has worn them in wet grass, on rainy days, and recently we gave them a real test in a bin of water several inches deep just to see how they’d do. Dry feet! It’s freeing to be able to say, “Yes! You can wear those shoes in the rain!” and know they’ll hold up.

Barefoot Qualities

The outsole is only 2.5mm and insole is even thinner giving these a total stack height of around 4mm. They are incredibly lightweight, can easily roll up and twist every direction, and also have great ground feel. They’re the total package! My daughter reports she can feel every little pebble and twig she comes across. She loves how easy they are to balance in when walking on curbs, fallen branches, and everything else kids find to walk on. If you want to experience varied terrains – just follow a kid around!

Materials & Care

I really admire a company that is totally transparent about what materials are used in their footwear and where that material comes from! They are fully dedicated to sustainability and protecting the environment. The Pegasus model is vegan and the beautiful sky blue canvas outer is made of recycled cotton with a blue microfiber edge and gray outsole. The whole shoe has a real monochrome cloudy sky look to it that’s perfect for spring and summer. They came with matching elastic laces, but if your child prefers another color or regular tie laces, Wildling carries a whole rainbow of colors to choose from here.

Before wearing, we treated them with Wildling’s waterproofing spray and since she’s been wearing them for a few months, they’re due for another treatment. Whenever any dirt or mud gets on them we let it dry and then brush it away, like Wildling recommends. And they still look great!

Inside the shoe you’ll find a gray and cream patterned lining (I love a print inside a shoe!!) made from organically grown cotton. The insole is removeable but to fully enjoy the water-repellent properties, the shoe should be worn with the insole. My daughter wears her shoes barefoot most of the time and is always taking her shoes on and off outside depending on what she’s doing. Needless to say, the insoles get pretty dirty. I keep a stick of Buncha Farmers in the bathroom and an old toothbrush to scrub dirty shoes or stained clothes and it worked great on the insoles. The cute half fox logo on each insole also helps kids get their shoes on the right feet!

Fit Type & Sizing

Wildling Shoes are available in 3 size categories; Cubs (EU 18-22), Wildling (EU23-35), and Rewild (36-48). To find the right size you can print the Fitkit templates, or if you don’t have a printer, measure and use the size chart. If a particular model fits differently, it will say so right on the product page (so a good idea to read each one).

The Pegasus model runs large and the shoes in this review are a size 33. They can fit an average to wide width foot, and are medium volume (will be tight on thick feet). The water flap sewn tongue has some room to adjust, but it won’t be quite as accommodating as models without that feature.

Cost & Ordering

The Pegasus in the Wildling size category costs $102, and its mini version in Cub sizes (called Pony) is $71. This charming blue model is also available for adults – you can find the Rewild sizes of Pegasus here. Wildling is based in Germany. Shipping to the US is very quick via DHL, and costs about $10. You can get free shipping if you spend over €200 (the threshold is always calculated in Euros, so it varies slightly in USD depending on the exchange rate). Your first return is free!

Critiques

There are a couple things my daughter has critiqued about these shoes. First, they are not super easy for her to put on. Yes the elastic laces mean she doesn’t have to spend time tying, but they aren’t stretchy enough to leave them tightened and slip your feet in. This is in part because they’re a high top style so the opening is smaller than a low top and because the new cotton elastic laces are firmer than Wildling’s original ones. If you tried the original elastic laces and found them too stretchy, you’ll find the cotton ones to be a lot sturdier. To put them on, she needs to loosen them quite a bit and then wrap the extra lace length around to keep it secure. She uses a lot of the excess length when loosening them, so we wanted to retain all of it. If you have low volume feet and don’t need as much, you can cut them, knot the ends, and add the toggle that’s included. You can also see the eyelets have left little black marks on the fabric (it’s on the laces too) which is unfortunate.

Next, she finds the water flaps a little uncomfortable on the top of her foot. You can see in the photos above, the tongue doesn’t really lay flat and she can feel the folds/wrinkled fabric which is noticeable when she first puts them on, but says she gets used to it quickly. Lastly, because of the water-repellent polyester membrane, they are not very breathable. This isn’t a surprise or a deal breaker as most water-repellent shoes sacrifice some air flow in order to keep the water out.

Conclusion

I asked my daughter to sum up of her thoughts about what it’s like to wear the Pegasus and she said, “They’re almost like wearing nothing. I always forget I have them on!” and I wholeheartedly agree. Aside from the few minor complaints, these are a great shoe for wet or dry conditions that can take you from spring to fall with ease.

Wildling Shoes makes the most flexible barefoot shoes in the world, for every day AND winter. They are lightweight, soft, and somehow also warm and water resistant. My boys and I tested out the Honeybear and Nessie styles of Wildling winter shoes this year to see how they hold up to the elements. Read on for the full review of these incredible shoes.

Wildling Barefoot Shoes

Wildling Shoes makes a range of barefoot shoe styles for babies all the way up to adults. You can get zero drop sandals, lightweight sneakers, and warm fuzzy boots, all made from soft fabric and wool.

Because it’s cold and/or wet much of the time where I live in the Midwest, I really hesitate to get fabric shoes. They just seem so impractical! But many Wildling models are made with an integrated membrane making them very water resistant. You can read my first experience with Wildling shoes in my Original Wildlings Review.

How to Winterproof Your Wildlings

Lightweight flexibility is the hallmark characteristic of Wildling shoes. They are as close to being barefoot as it gets in a closed toe shoe. But for winter? I live in a really cold climate and was not sure if these would be practical. While they will not suffice for the coldest winter days, I am comfortable in my Wildling shoes down to 15 degree F / -9.5 C with some accommodations. Check out how I winterproofed my Wildlings below.

• Felt Insoles – I recommend getting them from Wildling because they will fit perfectly, but you can also get a sheepskin insole.
• Thin sock liner
• Thick wool socks – These come in 4 sizes! They’re the first thick sock that fits my husband’s huge feet
• Leg Warmers
• Nikwax spray – For extra waterproofing & color protection

As long as you choose a size according to how you plan to wear them, Wildlings can work quite well in winter! They have proven to be much more practical than I anticipated (read up on more of my favorite warm accessories here).

The Honeybear Review

$145 | Cotton & Wool | Water Resistant | Rated to 20 F / -7 C (with insole)

The model I picked for myself is the Honeybear. I wanted something a little extra, but not too extra. The deep mustard of the Honeybear fits the bill perfectly: it is muted enough to be a neutral, but unique enough to add some flair. They were comfortable immediately out of the box, no breaking in required

Fit Type

Wildling Shoes are Roman shaped, so are great for people whose feet are more square. They can fit a low to high volume foot because of the laces, and are medium width (not extra wide).

Sizing

Wildling has very helpful size guides on their website you can print off to select your size. I was able to fit into the size 37 lengthwise, but decided to go up to a 38 because I knew I wanted to use thick socks and an insole. I also have wide feet and my foot was hanging off the edge of the printable template in a size 37 (my first Wilding Shoes are a size 37 and I have to wear them barefoot to fit). I normally wear a size 37 in barefoot shoes, so if you are wide at the toes like I am you may need to size up also.

Materials

The Honeybear is lined with an integrated membrane and wool to keep water out and heat in. I also got a felt insole to use on top (an additional layer on top of the wool that the shoe is already lined with), which I consider to be essential for warmth in a cold climate. To protect the color of my Honeybears I use Nikwax spray, otherwise I brush dry dirt off my shoes or use a wet rag to get stains out.

Adult models from Wilding have a more subtle fox design on the heel than the kids do, have Rewild written on the shoe tongue, and use traditional cotton laces (instead of elastic). Besides those differences, the kids version of the Honeybear is identical.

All Wildling shoes are made with this signature outsole that is specially engineered to flex and bend in all directions. The gap in the center is key to that motion, and has been reinforced to keep water out and prevent tearing through. You can learn more about this special design in my Original Wildlings Review.

The Nessie Review

$137 | Wool | Water Resistant | Rated to 15 F/ -9.5 C

My boys both chose the Nessie model and they are seriously the cutest little booties I’ve ever seen. The Nessie is even warmer than the Honeybear because the exterior is also wool (wool lining + wool upper = WARM). I recommend the extra insole for these as well if you live in a cold climate, but my boys didn’t get them and have been playing out in below freezing temps without complaining (kids!). I’d also note that even though my boys are wearing theirs in the snow, they aren’t really ideal as a snow shoe because they are only ankle height. They are coming inside with snow in the collar. But for a warm winter play shoe, they are perfect!

Fit Type

Wildling Kids Shoes are shaped the same as the adult version. They are Roman shaped, fit a low to high volume foot, and are average width (not extra wide). After comparing Wildling Shoes to several major kids barefoot shoe brands, they run narrower than the majority of them.

Sizing

Shoe sizing for kids is notoriously tricky, and difficult to compare across brands. But Wildling shoes run long, so sizing up is not necessary for growth. I used their printable templates and ordered the exact size recommended and they are quite spacious. My boys both have primal, unadulterated feet that don’t fit into “regular” shoes, but they are not ultra wide.

Materials

The Nessie is double lined with wool and an integrated membrane. They also have this adorable knitted collar around the heel and a subtle houndstooth pattern. The kids models have a colored fox logo on the heel and elastic laces, but the Nessie also comes in adults with regular laces. My boys are 4 & 7 and are wearing theirs often because they’re easy to put on themselves and so comfy cozy.

Conclusion

Wildling shoes have garnered themselves a cult following for their uncompromisingly barefoot features, sustainable/ethical manufacturing, and high standards for quality (not to mention a truly magical aesthetic). It is my privilege to share them with you as an excellent barefoot winter shoe option.

When you switch to healthy footwear, you’re deciding your feet are important. And that means no longer wearing shoes that don’t fit. But with so many variations in foot shape and size, it can be really hard to find a shoe that actually fits YOUR foot. In this post we’re discussing how to measure your feet, the basic foot types, and the barefoot shoes and brands that work well for your foot type.

Keep in mind that this is a general guide. There are tons of other barefoot shoe brands that fall somewhere in the middle and aren’t listed out here. To find barefoot shoes by category and lots more brands make sure you check out my other shoe lists, and the Barefoot Shoe Finder. But no matter what type of shoe you are looking for, getting to know your feet first will make shopping that much easier!

Measuring Your Feet

First things first. Having a handle on your foot measurements is pretty important, BUT it is not foolproof. After helping many customers measure and use a size chart via Anya’s Shop we’ve learned that fit is highly personal and this advice should be taken with a grain of salt. You will need to get to know how YOU want your shoes to fit first and foremost. So take this measuring and size chart advice with a grain of salt. With that in mind, here are some measuring best practices.

Foot Measuring Best Practices

• I always measure my feet in centimeters to ensure an accurate number, and I measure before each purchase (in case my feet have changed).

• If you plan to wear socks you should have them on.

• Measure at the end of the day when your feet are biggest.

• If you are new to barefoot shoes, keep in mind that they may feel too big the first time you put them on. If they stay securely on your foot when you walk and don’t slosh around, that space around your toes is good and you probably picked the correct size!

• The general recommendation is to wear shoes that are 1 – 1.2cm longer than your foot, but it can vary significantly depending on your preference and the style of shoe. In slip on shoes I sometimes have only .5cm extra length so that they fit close and securely on my foot. In lace up boots that are highly adjustable, I am comfortable with as much as 2cm extra length. If the shoe matches your foot shape perfectly, less extra length is required (they’re foot gloves!). And all of this can be impacted by the design of the upper, the materials used, and your particular foot type and preferences.

Despite the inevitable variations, getting an accurate measurement and understanding a size chart can reduce the chance of sizing mistakes. There are two main ways to measure: A foot tracing and the wall method. For expensive/risky shoe purchases I always measure both ways TWICE in the evening. It’s ok if your measurements are slightly different every time, just use the average.

Foot Tracing

A foot tracing is the most common way to measure. You simply trace an outline of your foot and measure. But it’s important to know that it adds about .5 cm to your actual foot size.

So if you use a foot tracing to figure out what size shoe you need, take your measurement and add only .5 – 1cm (so the total shoe length you are looking for would then be 1 – 1.2cm longer than your actual foot size), and find the nearest corresponding size on the size chart. My feet measure 23.2 from a foot tracing, so I look for shoes with an internal length of 23.7-24.2.

Some people get confused about their foot width when they use a tracing, because they aren’t taking into account the extra mm the tracing added. My foot measures 9.2cm wide from a tracing but I can comfortably wear shoes that have an internal measurement of 8.8cm (without socks). This is because my actual foot width is .5cm less than the 9.2 I get from a tracing.

Wall Method

The wall method yields the most accurate length and width of your foot. You measure foot length by placing your heel lightly against the wall (don’t push it in) and putting a heavy book where your longest toe ends. Then mark where the book is and measure that distance. You get your foot width by lining up the outside edge of your foot against the wall and placing the book on the other side. Then mark with a pencil and measure.

If you are ordering custom barefoot shoes, you might have additional measurements to take! Follow each brand’s instructions carefully and don’t be afraid to measure multiple times!

Understanding A Size Chart

To understand a size chart you need to read the instructions listed on the brands’ web page, because different brands create their size charts differently. It might show the length/width of the insole, the dimensions of the “last” used to mold the shoe, or the length of the foot that fits in each size.

If there are no instructions for how to use the size chart, contact the brand for clarification. But in my experience, when it’s not stated, the size chart shows the internal dimensions of the shoe and not the foot that fits inside. In that case, you would use the above instructions to find your foot length and add 1cm to find your size.

Understanding Foot Type

There are a dizzying amount of foot types and most people fall somewhere on a spectrum (metaphor for life). So let’s illustrate the main ones.

• Slope feet have a prominent big toe and all toes are shorter than the previous one.
• Mountain feet have their 2nd toe longest.
• Plateau feet have the first 3 toes all the same length and then it tapers (or for some it might be 2 or 4 that are the same length).
• Square feet are straight across.

Identifying the shape of your foot can make it a lot easier to select a shoe!

You can see above that barefoot shoe brands all have a different shape to them, while having in common that they are wide at the toe box where we need to the most space. So let’s discuss brands that work well for each foot type.

Barefoot Shoe Brands for Slope Feet

Not many brands cater to Slope only feet, but the good news is they don’t need to. When all your toes are shorter than your big toe you’re not likely to have issues with them running into the front of the shoe. So people with Slope feet can often fit into every shoe shape (provided they work for your width and volume – keep reading for more info). Here are a few barefoot shoe brands that follow an Slope foot shape.

Plateau and Square feet also need to watch for sloping toe boxes. That doesn’t mean you can never try other options, but you might need to size up for enough space for your outside toes. People with this foot type may want to focus on brands that also have an extra wide fit.

What is Foot Volume?

On to the next foot feature! Foot volume describes how much vertical space your foot takes up. This can be at any point along the foot, including at the arch or instep, the ball of the foot, or the toes. And it is independent of your length, width, and foot type.

• High volume feet are “tall” or “deep” and take up space in the top of the shoe. If you have this type of foot you may find that shoes feel extra snug over the arch of your foot and you have to keep your laces loose.
• Low volume feet are shallow, or in other words they don’t come very high up from the ground and don’t take up much vertical space. People with this type of foot may find that there is extra space in the top of their shoes. This can result in a lot of sloshing around and toe gripping, but don’t worry it’s an easy fix.

In my experience, foot volume has a very high impact on whether your shoes will fit. Recognizing what kind of foot volume you have can really help you make better shoe purchases.

Barefoot Shoes Brands for Low Volume Feet

There aren’t many barefoot shoe brands that cater specifically to low volume feet, BUT that shouldn’t prevent you from trying them all. It is very easy to fix a low volume problem either with barefoot insoles or my favorite felt inserts.

And if you are someone with a Medium Volume Foot, you are in luck. Because nearly everything else should work for your volume. And you can also make many high volume shoes work with the laces cinched a bit, and low volume shoes with the insoles removed.

Narrow Vs Wide

In the barefoot shoe world width usually refers to toebox width, not width the entire length of the shoe. Some people might have narrow heels but wide toes, while others are wide the entire length of the foot.

You can see that some of the above brands have narrow heels, and others tend to be wider through the shoe. For the purposes of this post, we will keep it focused on toe box width, but the better you know your feet the easier it will be to find the right shoe.

How Do I Know My Foot Width?

Narrow and wide are subjective terms, but most barefoot shoe brands fall into what we’ll call “average” width. Of course they are not average compared to conventional shoes, but conventional shoes are often too narrow for standard feet, so for our purposes “average” is appropriate.

So if you find that your feet are sloshing around in all your shoes (including barefoot shoes) then you may have narrow feet. If your foot is always rolling off the edges of the soles of your barefoot shoes, then you might have wide feet. If you have no idea, I recommend trying one of the average width brands listed below (maybe one with free shipping/returns to be safe!) and going from there – because if you’ve only worn conventional shoes thus far you likely have a distorted view of your foot width.

All barefoot shoe brands should be wide compared to conventional shoes. But this is a list of extra wide options, for people who don’t fit into other barefoot shoe brands, starting with the widest. Keep in mind that custom may be a good option if you have trouble finding shoes that fit (see the next section).

Major Barefoot Shoe Brands for Average Width Feet

If you don’t even know where to begin, the brands listed here are a good place to start. They have an anatomical shape and tend to fit an average width foot well. If you find they are too wide or narrow, that can help you determine where to go next.

38 Barefoot Shoe Brands from Narrow To Wide

In the photo below I ordered 38 different barefoot shoe brands that carry everyday barefoot sneakers and lifestyle shoes from narrowest to widest. This is looking specifically at width across the ball of the foot – you can see that there are variations in overall shape between them which may make some shoes feel narrow on your foot, even if they measure wide at the ball of the foot (that’s why the above information on foot shape is useful!). Also, keep in mind that some brands have different width options available, and variations between models. This is my best attempt at generalizing the information to help orient you!

A couple notes: Some of these brands that show up as a narrower option sometimes work for even extra wide feet. Most notably, Wildling Shoes and Mukishoes. Both of these barefoot shoe brands have extra flexible soles that flatten out and tend to accommodate a variety of shapes. Wildling also often has wide-fitting options even with the same sole shape (more material up top). While it’s true that the actual sole width on those two brands are in the correct order in this photo, you may find that they still fit wide. Ultimately we’ll all experience shoes differently, so take everything here with a grain of salt.

Xero Shoes is one of the largest barefoot shoe brands in the US with some of the best barefoot gym and running shoes you’ll find. But they also have boots, dress shoes, and casual sneakers for all your other activities. One of the nice things about Xero is they have several affordable options and regular sales, making them a great first brand to try.

• Wide straight fit

If you have a foot that stays thick through the middle and heel this is a brand to consider. However, this can be problematic for people who have more fan-shaped (wide at the toes, narrow at the heels)

Wildling Shoes are incredibly minimal and lightweight, they feel as close to being actually barefoot as it gets. But for how flexible and thin they are, they are surprisingly practical.

While it’s true that they are not as durable as other outdoor barefoot shoes, our Wildlings have held up really well as lifestyle shoes. They even have water resistant options, but we’ve found that water can come through if they get really soaked. So we don’t usually wear Wildlings in bad weather for long stretches of time.

I would love to see their sneakers made with a natural textile instead of synthetic for better comfort and breathability, but I still wear my Feelgrounds all the time.

They are fully transparent about their sourcing and practices, so you can buy knowing you’re not hurting the earth. They are also very comfortable and soft, one of my favorites for a barefoot feel in a sneaker that looks more mainstream.

The biggest challenge is that they can sell out of popular styles quickly because they produce in small batches.

If you have a significant foot length discrepancy, they also are able to make shoes in two different sizes/fits because they are made to order.

Softstar also has a variety of grounding options, and shoes with one of the widest toe boxes I’ve ever seen on the Softstar Primal line!

Peerko makes lifestyle barefoot shoes that are extremely well loved by foot enthusiasts. They are beautiful, well-made, and have a universal fit type that works for a wide variety of feet. Somehow they fit wide but look sleek! They are a must have in my closet, particularly in the fall because they have incredible barefoot boots.

The biggest drawback is that they don’t accept returns outside the EU if you order directly from them. We try to help with that by carrying popular models at Anya’s Shop, but we don’t carry all of them.

When it comes to durability in the Splay kids’ shoes, we’ve found that the colors fade a bit with heavy use and overall don’t last as long as the more expensive kids shoes. But, for the price we love them! Kids are hard on shoes, we don’t expect them to look flawless.

Bohempia

Bohempia is loved for their classic sneaker styles but in a barefoot shape. And with their wide option, even people with extra wide feet get to enjoy them! I wear my Bohempia slip ons all the time to replace the Vans I used to wear (and that pinched my toes).

The upper is made of natural hemp and the outsole is vulcanized rubber – both long lasting materials. They are well loved by me and many barefoot enthusiasts! You can find select Bohempia styles at Anya’s Shop in the US for easier access too.

Zeazoo shoes are buttery soft and light, with endless color and style options. Their strongest points are their sandals and sheepskin boots, both for kids and adults (boots only go up to an EU 42 though). I wear my Dingo boots all through the winter – they are possibly the comfiest shoes I own!

I also love their loafer styles, but the other shoe models with a top stitch fit less universally and work best for fairly slim feet (they are also shallow over the toes).

We like Magical Shoes because they have a wide variety of styles and they are all uber soft and flexible. I’m a big fan of their Lupino chelsea boots, they’re so comfortable and it’s hard to find a classic chelsea style that soft. In fact, I love almost everything they make!

The only complaint I have is that the lining on the sneaker styles (Promenade and Explorer) is rough and I don’t love the way it feels. Oh, and the fact that the closed toed shoes run much smaller than the sandals.
