Meet PaperKrane

PaperKrane is an Australian company specializing in fun, funky —and maybe even a little “out there”—barefoot shoes. PaperKrane began in 2012 as a passion project when founder Kate Corleison began making eye-catching baby booties inspired by her love of the Japanese art of origami. Her bold and quirky patterns quickly gained popularity, and over time they expanded into adult models.

PaperKrane’s mission is to create ethically made, fashion-forward barefoot footwear for all ages featuring a sole with their signature “Four Fs.” Flexible, flat, featherlight, and foot-shaped.

With initiatives like “Soles with Soul,” they host collaborations with various charitable organizations that feature delightfully creative patterns and give proceeds to important causes, like protecting endangered species and promoting body positivity in children, which is pretty awesome.

I have worked with PaperKrane for a long time (we have carried some of their models at Anya’s Shop!) and have always loved the down to earth vibe of the company. And of course the fun shoes! I mean, where else can you find a shoe with a cartoon pickle print?? It’s been fun to see them grow from their oft-sold out small batch production to a complete range of sizes.

I think one of the things I love best about the PaperKrane is that they are always playing with the unexpected: brightly colored prints and boldly patterned outsoles, featuring leopard and zebra prints, army print, and my personal favorite—the rainbow outsole.

Besides their prints, something else that is unique about the shoes is that they are thoughtfully designed to be accessible and disability friendly as outlined here —a personal mission for founder Kate Corleison, whose own daughter has needed adaptive footwear. Velcro openings and a high instep that opens up wide make a number of PK models mobility-friendly. This is not easy to find in the shoe world in general, let alone in the barefoot shoe world!

Because many Australian schools require uniforms, PaperKrane has also created a line of school-friendly barefoot shoes that check all the boxes—compliant with regulations but still foot-shaped, featherlight, flat (zero drop), and flexible. Unlike the heavy, clunky, and heeled school shoes that have dominated uniforms for decades, these kicks let growing feet move naturally while keeping kids comfortable all day. Finally, school shoes that are as smart as the students wearing them.

Samantha’s daughter loves fun shoes and dresses with flair, so naturally PaperKrane has been a staple in her wardrobe. And for the most part the quality of PK shoes has been good even with an active kid’s wear and tear. We have had just one single issue come up over the years – one time the threads on the outsole of a pair of sneakers started to fray quite quickly. This seemed like an isolated incident, considering how many other pairs we’ve tested without any issue.

Shoe Specs

The company offers both leather and vegan (cotton and/or faux leather) options, so they are well-suited for a range of preferences. These true barefoot shoes are ultra-flexible with minimal cushioning. If you need to take up some space or just want a little extra cushion, PaperKrane also offers 5mm insoles sold separately.

Sizing & Fit

The PaperKrane fit is:

PaperKrane has widened its toe box in both kids’ and adult sizes, while maintaining a shape that’s spacious but not excessively wide. One thing to note: they have a more rectangular fit, meaning the midfoot runs a bit loose. While some may love the extra room, those who prefer a snugger midfoot fit might find them a tad too boxy. Overall, they offer a solid, universal fit that works well for most feet!

Something you’ll want to keep in mind if ordering PaperKrane shoes is their return policy. To request a return, you must contact them within 14 days of delivery. Shipping back to Australia is at your own expense and they don’t offer full refunds unless a mistake was made on their end; you only get an exchange or store credit for change of mind, wrong sizing, or anything bought on sale. If you order and they end up not working out for you it would be worth trying to sell them online.

Alright, let’s dig in to the best barefoot winter boots. First we’ll cover the best warm boots for snow and traction, and then the best for comfort & ground feel.

Best for Snow

Good barefoot snow boots are warm, waterproof (or can be waterproofed), and have good traction. Here are what I consider to be the best options for wintry weather conditions!

Canvas & Wool | Rated to -50F / -46C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Great

The showstopper for the most serious of winter weather is the Tundra ESC (find the men’s version here). It’s suitable even for arctic conditions, with a felted wool boot liner and insoles – the first of its kind in the natural footwear world and a real achievement! These fit pretty wide already, but I know from experience with Steger Mukluks that the felt will tamp down.

We get weather here as low as -50F, but I don’t spend much time out when it’s that cold. However I will go on pretty long walks when it’s -20F. I will for sure be using these Tundra boots when it’s that cold.

If you don’t need something arctic-level intense, I am truly loving the Gobi Hiber. They pull on easily, are water resistant, and lined with soft fleece. In fact, they’ve been my preferred boots for morning walks this fall. Just so cozy and cute. Men’s version here.

These come with the Thermal Insole that I don’t love, so if you want really warm toes I suggest replacing it with a felted wool insole.

An even comfier, warmer option is the Explorer Mid. They’re soooo nice and have better traction than the Gobi Hiber. But not water resistant (which is weird to me) and a lower cut. I have replaced the insole on these as well, and suggest using a waterproof spray for wet weather. Men’s version here.

The Tracker Winter is a waterproof, insulated version of their hiking boot that I quite like as a snow shoe. They are kind of stiff when new, and I like to size up in them for space. But really functional. Men’s version here.

Sizing & Fit

• Wide width (Tundra, Gobi Hiber, Explorer) & Medium width (Tracker & Gobi Warmlined)
• Sloped, so not the best fit for square shaped feet
• Medium volume
• Runs slightly long – I normally size up in winter boots but didn’t need to in any of these except for the Tracker Winter. Those I got in a 38, the rest are size 37.

Lems Shoes

Lems is an in-between brand with a more traditional thicker outsole, but a wide toe box and natural fit. Great for people who want to take care of their feet but aren’t ready for full barefoot! Or if you just need something super practical for the winter, Lems has you covered. However if you want that flexibility and ground feel, I’d choose something else on this list.

Leather | Rated to 5F / -15C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Breck boot is a taller cut, waterproof boot with a side zip and the same thicker outsole. This year they come in an insulated version, and I find them to be a stellar snow boot and all-purpose cold weather boot. The sole is definitely robust and not super flexible. They also are not fully zero drop, but have a 3mm heel rise. For me this is an acceptable compromise in a winter boot, but if you are sensitive you may notice it.

The new Chelsea Tuff in brown has a fluffy collar and lining that is surprisingly warm. The sole is quite thick (makes me feel so tall!) but flexes at the toe. Really well-made shoes with a grippy practical outsole. Also waterproof. The black color has no fluff and not as warm, but is still insulated.

Leather | Rated to 5F / -15C | Traction: Snow – Great, Ice – Good

The Boulder Boot Summit is the warmest Boulder boot option from Lems, with the same outsole as on the Breck boot. So it’s got good grip and is well insulated. I personally prefer the Boulder Boot Grip, because it’s lighter and more flexible (and also fully zero drop). But if you want the extra warmth the Summit is a good one!

Sizing & Fit

• Wide – not quite as wide as the Lems Primal Zen or Chelsea suede, but still quite generous.
• Plateau shaped – may not work for really square feet, but should for most others.
• Medium to high volume.
• Runs small. I consistently size up a half size larger than I do in most barefoot boot brands. Mine are all a women’s 8.

Zaqq Quintic

Leather | Wool Lined | Waterproof | Rated to -5F/-20C | Ships from US or EU

Traction Rating: Snow – Great | Ice – Great

The Zaqq Quintic is so soft, and yet warm and practical. They are definitely the most flexible option in this list that is also snow ready.The outsole is grippy so you’re not sliding everywhere, and the waterproof upper means your feet stay dry. Both Justin and I love these boots as a stylish barefoot winter boot that can be worn under dress pants, with jeans, or even leggings and skirts. They’re surprisingly warm and functional even without a heavy sole.

We carry them in the US as much as possible (linked above), but they usually sell out so you can also find them in Germany from Zaqq Barefoot directly where they carry additional colors and vegan versions.

The fur lining is quite thick and so they feel pretty snug in my normal size. I went up one and they still are quite cozy!

Xero Alpine

The Alpine Pull-On is new for 2025 and my favorite Xero winter boot. They are surprisingly warm for how lightweight they are, and so easy to pull on and off. You get some adjustability with the toggle, but they are quite roomy through the heel so I don’t recommend sizing up for socks. They’ll fit higher volume feet best, but my lazy bones will be pulling these on often this winter.

The Xero Alpine is not as warm or as flexible as the Alpine Pull-on, but it does cinch around your foot much better so is more secure. I think they’d be good for a slightly warmer climate than mine (I’m thinking Rocky Mountains), but not my top pick for frigid midwest winters. I did swap out the insole for a sheepskin one and that helped a lot (it always does!). The sole is on the stiff side, and I found them to be slippery on ice (but fine in snow).

• Medium to wide width – Not recommended for extra wide feet.
• Mountain shape (rounded toe box)
• High volume
• The Alpine boot runs on the small side, but the Alpine Pull-On runs bigger! I wear an 8 in Alpine and a 7.5 in the Pull-On.

Be Lenka Winter Boots – Extra Wide Friendly

Be Lenka Barefoot is also upping the winter boot game this year. They have 3 excellent options to choose from, and all have a generous wide toe box for real comfort. They may be a bit heavier and thicker than the Vivobarefoot options, but I like that I don’t have to add extra insoles to make them warmer.

The new ArcticEdge is super warm, water resistant, and has great traction. I admit that my lazy bones prefer the pull-on Vivo boots for daily wear, but these are more practical for weather. A kind of heavy duty winter urban hybrid.

Another practical option from Be Lenka is the PolarStride. It has the same Primaloft material as in the ArcticEdge, but a more flexible outsole and a taller shaft. I love the idea of them, and they are quite cozy, but I wish there was a way to tighten them. They fit loose on me.

The Winter 3.0 is also wool lined, highly water resistant, and on the same functional outsole, but has more of a dressy look. They aren’t as warm or soft and comfy as the others, but bonus points for style. Also, I love real wool. They’re a good hybrid everyday & snow boot.

The Saguaro Rise is the cheapest practical barefoot snow boot to date! They are waterproof, lightly insulated, and cinch up nicely to fit different foot types or different socks.

They do run small, especially if you have wide feet (and I would skip entirely if you have extra wide feet). And shipping can be a bit slow from Saguaro. But if you are in need of an affordable waterproof snow boot this is the best there is!

Jenon Leather Snowflake – Extra Wide Friendly

These Snowflake boots from Czech brand Jenon Leather were a surprise hit for me. They are very cozy warm with a wide toe box and slim heel (which means they don’t slide around my narrow heels). I so appreciate that in a winter boot, where it’s really common for me to need to add leg warmers to get that cinched in feel. They also don’t press over the tops of my toes, even with the thick lining.

The leather upper is smooth and quite water resistant so I didn’t bother treating it. I also appreciated that the sole is a bit thicker than many barefoot boots for more warmth while still being flexible.

• Runs small – I recommend sizing up one.

The lining is very thick so I am glad I sized up. I found that the volume was on the lower side, but I know that many people with high volume feet enjoy these boots after sizing up. The Freet Arken is an insulated waterproof boot with quite a cozy upper. Like in Vivobarefoot boots, I find the insole to be not warm enough for winter so I recommend replacing it for a wool alternative. Once swapped out these are very warm.

The outsole has lugs that works best for soft ground – snow, mud, grass. I recommend these for cold weather hiking where you don’t get deep snow (because they are a shorter height).

• Wide fit – will work for some extra wide feet too

• Medium to low volume
• Runs small

I sized up to a 38 and they’re still a little snug, but I can wear medium weight wool socks with them.

Steger Mukluks – Extra Wide Friendly

Steger Mukluks are supremely warm and also wide and flexible. The insole and body of the boots are lined with 9mm thick felted wool that is moisture wicking and built for extreme temps. The outsole is rubber and surprisingly grippy on ice and show. The exterior is high quality moose hide (both soft and super durable).

But a new update to the outsole makes them no longer zero drop (roughly 5mm heel lift) and not as flexible as before. To me, 3mm and below is acceptable in a snow boot but 5mm is pushing it a little. However, for some people in really cold climates, this small heel lift may be worth it, because of how warm they are (and because they are not as expensive as Vivobarefoot’s Tundra Esc boots).

None of the Steger models come waterproof, so I also bought their waterproof spray and treated my boots before wearing them. It has worked great for me, whenever my boots get wet the water beads up and rolls off the leather instead of soaking in. I reapply it each fall and they look almost brand new even after four winters! And I hear repeatedly from readers who have owned Stegers for 5, 10, even 20 years and they are still going strong.

To be as close to a barefoot winter boot (and as warm) as possible, use them with the felted wool insole instead of the supportive insole (boots ship with both). And if you have low volume feet like me you might even want to order an extra felt insole and layer both inside the shoe.

Note that the felted lining tamps down with use! So they might feel pretty snug at first, but you will get more room as you wear them. I ordered a Women’s 7 Wide for my wide feet and they are very spacious after a few years. You can also call in to Steger’s shop and ask for internal measurements.

If you have low volume, narrow heels, and/or thin ankles, expect to need an extra insole, thick socks, or leg warmers to make these a secure fit. You also might want to order a model with ties so you can tighten them on your leg. If you have thicker ankles and calves and don’t need the ties, Steger also has models that are just pull-on.

Best for Comfort

The following warm barefoot winter boots are cozy and comfortable, but not as functional for lots of time outdoors in wintery conditions. They are your lifestyle boots, but made warmer than most other barefoot boots!

Shapen Cozy – Extra Wide Friendly

The Shapen Cozy is so light and soft, they are perfect for someone who has sensitive feet that get irritated by stiff heel cups. I have reached for mine frequently the last three winters since they were released and thoroughly enjoy every time. They are an excellent cozy barefoot boot for cold winter days, especially if you are someone who wants a true barefoot feel.

The Cozy is my favorite comfy warm boot option from Shapen, but they also carry the Urbaneer (similar but without a side zip) and the Frosty (fine, but not my favorite). This is a good brand for people with extra wide feet that have a hard time fitting into other brands.

Unlike many lined boots, the Shapen Cozy does not run small. I am still wearing a size 38, but I have more room than I do in most of my other size 38 barefoot boots (they fit almost like a 39). I still don’t recommend sizing down in most cases because you’ll likely want to be able to wear socks.

Peerko Frost

The Peerko Frost is probably the most stylish barefoot winter boot in the bunch! The smooth leather is naturally water resistant, and you can waterproof them yourself for extra protection. The outsole isn’t the best for winter terrain, so I prefer to use them for warmth as I go around town as opposed to playing in the snow or hiking. But if you’re someone who needs to look nice in the winter AND spend time walking around outside they are phenomenal.

Peerko boots have a pretty universal fit and are well loved across the board. They probably won’t suite someone with an extra wide toe splay, and you might want to size up one because of the thick lining. I wear mine in a 38.

Zeazoo Dingo

The Zeazoo Dingo is a personal favorite of mine. They are the perfect barefoot Uggs dupe and so easy to slip on for quick jaunts outside when it’s freezing. I wear mine often as school-run, coffee-run, and mail-run shoes. The sheepskin lining wicks sweat so they’re comfortable barefoot and they are just so warm but lighter than all the above options (and nice and wide). You can also roll the top down to get a furry cuff and a shorter height.

While they are a home run for warmth, they don’t have a robust outsole so the bottom edges of the boot can start wearing quickly if you use them roughly. And the upper is not water resistant. They’re more of a warm lifestyle boot than an active outdoor snow boot. Still, a total lifesaver if you live in a cold climate.

I size down in the Dingo and still have plenty of space! The cozy fur lining also tamps down with use so it’s ok if they feel snug when brand new. Once worn in they can be a little loose on thin ankles and narrow heels, so leg warmers are a great way to make the Dingo work for low volume feet.

Softstar Phoenix

The Softstar Phoenix is a fully lined high quality sheepskin boot with a side zipper for easy on and off. The fur is super thick, warm, and close fitting so you don’t feel like you’re going to walk out of the boot. They can be worn with or without socks because of the breathable, moisture wicking sheepskin. They keep my legs and feet super cozy in cold temps, and they’re so easy to put on and off! I find myself wearing them a ton on snowy winter walks.

The only downside is that because the leather upper comes all the way down to the flat sole they can take scuffs sooner than if that part was covered with outsole material. I would also recommend waterproofing them if you plan to use them in wet conditions.

The Phoenix is made entirely of leather and so can stretch to fit a variety of foot types, but they might feel too snug on extra wide/high volume feet. I also recommend sizing up because of the thick lining unless you have quite slim, low volume feet. Mine are a 7U, or Women’s 8.

Wildling Shoes hold a special place in my heart. They literally feel like wearing nothing, combining innovation, quality materials, and a gorgeous aesthetic. Besides being adorable, Wildling has somehow managed to create an ultra thin outsole that bends in all directions effortlessly. The uppers of Wildling winter shoes have an integrated waterproof membrane and are topped with either wool or cotton. The models change annually, but for the best warmth I recommend the ones made of a wool upper with a wool lining.

I also wear a felt insole inside my Wildling winter boots, which I consider essential (my cold rating above includes the insoles). If I wear wool socks and leg warmers I can even get by in 15 F/ -10 C for short periods of time! Though I am most comfortable in Wildling boots in temps of about 25 F+. While these are not sufficient to keep me outside for long during the harsh Midwest winters, I wear mine frequently for short jaunts and feel like I’m in slippers the whole time.

The Mukishoes Igneous is a soft boot that looks stylish and on trend while still being delightfully light and flexible. They’re one of my faves! A similar feel to the Shapen Cozy, but with a slimmer toe box and a felted wool lining. I wear mine with an additional wool insole for warmth (and it helps them fit better on my low arches too).

Mukishoes has a few other really nice barefoot boots, but the Igneous is the warmest and best for wintry weather!

Manitobah is an Aboriginal-owned Canadian brand that makes faux fur and sheepskin lined mukluks. The original mukluks are built on a super flexible Vibram outsole (but not all models are zero drop, so look for the flat ones!). They are thick and warm inside and yet you still feel grounded. One bonus to Manitobah is that they have waterproof options!

Manitobah tends to fit quite loose through the ankle so I chose this wrap tie version for adjustability. They are the softest, coziest boots! Since the Short Wrap is not waterproof, I used Nikwax spray on it, which seems to be working well.

Manitobah mukluks have a fairly tapered toe box when brand new, but there is a lot of vertical space and the leather stretches out a lot as you wear them. Still not best suited for really wide toes.

The Magical Shoes Alaskan is an ultra flexible, ultra lightweight wool-lined barefoot winter boot. The outsole is very grippy on snow and ice, and the side zipper makes them easy to put on and off. For being so light, they are surprisingly practical. But I do find the material on the thinner side so my feet got cold faster than in the other boots I tested. I put in an extra insole and warm socks, but still felt the cold through the top fairly quickly in my climate.

While the upper material is water resistant, the stitching, zipper and the tongue is not waterproof so water can come through pretty easily if soaked.

For years we struggled to find kids winter boots that were both good for their feet and practical for real weather. Finally there are options that have a wide toe box and flexibility. We did the research so you don’t have to!

Here are the best barefoot winter boots for kids that are practical for playing in cold, mud, snow, and rain.

Why Barefoot Boots for Kids?

We live in a cold climate with temps often dipping below zero Fahrenheit. In order to get outside year round, practical shoes are a must. But after my run-in with chronic foot pain I’ve learned that we also need shoes that don’t hurt our feet! This is especially important for little feet that are still developing.

The barefoot winter boots listed here are what I feel confident putting on my own children, knowing they won’t damage their growing bodies and will still protect them from the elements. This is the same criteria I use for all my kids shoes.

Before we head into my recommended winter shoes, here are a few tips for staying warm in the coldest of temps.

Winter Hacks

The following are winter essentials in our house. They keep us moving and grooving in our wide toe box boots all through the cold season.

• Wool insoles (Felty is extra thick, Woolly is thinner) – I keep an extra pair handy to add to boots that aren’t quite warm enough. They make a HUGE difference.
• Wool socks – my younger son wears Plus 12 socks and my older son wears Creepers toe socks.
• Waterproofing products – Kids that are tough on shoes wear through waterproofing quickly. It’s worth having something on hand to up the water resistance mid-season.
• Boot dryer – I have used this exact one on my floor vents (with fan air, not heat) for years. If you don’t have floor vents you can use an electric dryer. It has SAVED us because nobody likes putting on cold, wet shoes.

My oldest son has been wearing Vivobarefoot snow boots for the past 7 years. They’ve been the only pair he’s needed for rain, snow, mud, and cold weather. This nylon boot is easy to pull on and has a generous toe box that should fit most kids’ foot shape. They are a good balance of light and flexible, with a practical outsole and protective toe guard. I also like that they are somewhat fitted through the ankle so that they aren’t floppy.

We love everything about them, except that they aren’t waterproof. For some families that may be alright, but for my kids it’s a dealbreaker. They only have one winter boot in their closet, and they simply spend too much time out in the snow for them to not be waterproof. If you are ambitious, you can waterproof them yourself!

Oh Wildling Shoes, how we love your sock like feel and cozy warmth! These are another big favorite in our house because they are so lightweight and comfortable, but surprisingly warm and weather resistant.

I recommend choosing the models made entirely of wool (upper and lining) for the most warmth, and adding a wool insole to your order. This combo keep my kids and myself cozy and dry. You’d be amazed at how practical a shoe this minimal can be! However they aren’t snow boots, so you can still get snow in the top and if you spend long hours in wet conditions water will likely get through.

Wildling’s winter models tend to change each year. For the 2025-2026 season the Koselig, Atento, and Kindur Sten are all made of wool and are great for shorter outings or less extreme winter days.

Softstar Phoenix

The Softstar Phoenix is a supremely cozy sheepskin boot, handmade in Oregon. I wear the Phoenix in adult sizes, and the quality is excellent. They are luxurious boots for serious warmth! You can choose custom colors, which my son loved. The lower portion is made of smooth leather and naturally water resistant, but the shaft of the boot is suede and water can soak through. For my rough and tumble kiddo, this proved to be an issue. So for serious snow play I recommend using something like SnoSeal on the upper.

Another thing to note is that they have a side zipper but otherwise can’t be adjusted. My son liked to wear these without socks (one of the beautiful things about genuine sheepskin!), and after the leather broke in they were a little floppy on him. He walked right out of them into the snow once! So while they are delightfully warm, they work better with socks or for thick, high volume feet.

Be Lenka has a new line of kids winter shoes out this year that we have been testing for you. They have a generous toe box shape, are waterproof, insulated, and functional for winter activities. But we find them quite stiff this year, and wish the outsole was lighter and more flexible. For some families this will still be a good option, but our kids testers are kind of clomping around in them.

The Ailo boot is very thick and insulated. It has a velcro closure, and a higher volume fit. I wish they had some adjustability over the arch, but like how warm they are. The Zippu is an alternative with velcro closures for a more secure fit. They are not as insulated, but will work for lighter snow and rain play.

Ten Little has these cute and functional snow boots for toddlers and little kids! The main body is an insulated polyester material that reminds me of a puffer jacket. They can cinch closed at the top with a elastic toggle strap and the entire boot shaft opens with a large velcro closure on the side. They’re easy enough for my 4 year to put on himself! I was delighted to discover the outsole on these has some grippy lugs, too.

These are $60 and only available up to size 13, but we have hope that Ten Little will expand the size range for these in the future.

No one does outdoor shoes like Vivobarefoot. They walk a delicate balance between durable, practical and yet still flexible and thin enough to let you feel the earth. You can find boots and shoes for different terrains, climates, and seasons and all function excellently. Between all the members of my family, we’ve tried just about all of them.

My favorite is the Vivobarefoot Tracker Leather – they’re an excellent durable barefoot hiking boot with natural water resistance, lugs for traction, and a removable thermal insole. They’re IMO the best combination of barefoot feel with function. And for warm weather, the Primus Trail is the favorite in our house. They all shed mud well and are up to the task.

While the Vibarefoot hiking boots are extremely functional and durable, they feel a little stiff at first for a barefoot hiking shoe and take breaking in. We have multiple pairs in our house that are several years old and I can confidently attest to them becoming soft and flexible over time.

Xero Hiking Shoes

Xero has a few barefoot hiking boot and shoe options, but my favorite is the Scrambler line. They have a softer fit and feel than the Ridgeway line and are easy to wear. Especially the Scrambler Low EV, which is the most flexible option with a forgiving mesh upper. The waterproof options fit a little snugger (because of the membrane), so I tend to prefer the others.

Xero’s barefoot hikers are a little more cushioned than Vivobarefoot and need less breaking in, but aren’t quite as technical. However, they’ve been long lasting for me, are at a lower price point, and I appreciate the medium thick sole for just a bit more between me and the ground.

Freet Barefoot has several barefoot hiking boots and shoes that function excellently, including waterproof and knit options. The hallmark feature of Freet hikers is that they have a wide foot shape with plenty of space for all toes, while still being practical for outdoor use. The Chamois (above right) is new for 2025 and I am really enjoying them! The hardwearing leather upper is a little bit stiff (every waterproof boot I test is), but the fit is good and they feel quality.

Our lightweight favorites are the Howgill and Keld 2 (above left) -they are so soft and comfy with zero break in time and all the toe space. The Keld 2 is the most breathable, airy trail shoe in this list!

The Groundies Portland surprised me this spring. They have a roomy toe box, but are still fitted through the midfoot and heel. They are structured but soft, and the outsole has decent grip. There is not as much tread on the Portland as the above options I’ve reviewed, but they are a good balance between barefoot feel and function.

They are similar to the Freet Chamois, but not quite as wide in the toe box and the outsole is a little more flexible, thin and grippy (the Freet Chamois has a deeper tread).

• Runs slightly small because of the insulation and waterproofing. I have a size 38.

Lono Wild

The Lono Wild is a lightweight, soft suede hiking shoe that required no breaking in and was immediately soft on my feet – a rarity among leather hiking shoes. They have just a bit of cushion under foot, but there is still a lot of ground feel. Overall, I find them delightful to wear!

My one gripe is that the laces don’t tighten super easily over my low volume feet. It’s one of those oft overlooked but still important features. However wearing them with a pair of wool socks helped fill in any extra volume and I expect that the suede will mold to my foot making the shoe easier to work with. Worth it to not have any pinch points but still have good traction and stability.

Be Lenka barefoot has two good hiking shoes. The first is the Trailwalker – a lowcut option with a flexible, light outsole. These were recently updated to a 3.0 version, and this version is not quite as wide as the original so I no longer recommend for extra wide feet. The 3.0 is also more padded and feels a little more protective (I tend to bang my feet into rocks when I hike). The suede upper is durable, but soft and the toe guard protects against inevitable scuffs.

The second is the Nevada (currently only in the EU) – they have an extra wide toe box, one of the widest available, and are made of a soft but sturdy leather. They are great for people who want the width, but I do find the sole a little bit heavier than I prefer.

Merrell Vapor Trail Glove

Merrell is a US brand that primarily sells non-barefoot shoes, but also has a few good wide toe box barefoot models. The best known, and the one that my son backpacked Yosemite in, is the Trail Glove. It has a quality outsole with toe protection, a bit of water resistance for shallow puddles, and a breathable mesh upper.

The outsole is a little bit thicker and stiffer than many of the other barefoot hiking shoes reviewed here, but that can be useful if you want a bit more protection. They also have an even heavier duty model called the Wrapt for extreme terrains. Merrell has been a solid high quality brand for me for many years, even before I started wearing barefoot shoes.

I sized up for a little extra width because I have wider than average feet. They are comfy for me, but I do feel my toes on the sides of the shoe.

Softstar Switchback II – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather & Wool Lining | Sizes US 5U-13U

The Softstar Switchback II has a soft, supple leather upper and thin wool lining for a comfortable fit with no break in time. It comes in two widths to fit average to extra wide feet. The outsole is thick but flexible Vibram Megagrip – it has serious traction and durability that should last for many, many miles. And if it does wear out, you can have it resoled by a professional cobbler (this is the only barefoot hiker listed here that can be repaired easily)!

I love that they conformed to my arches and ankles easily with no rubbing, and leave space above my toes (no more pressure from above like in the previous version). My only complaint is that they come in whole sizes only, and I would fit best in a half size. Mine are a 7U or Women’s 8 and they are a little too big and long, which makes the sole feel a little heavier and clunkier. I am thinking about going to the size below, because the leather should mold to my feet even if they are a little bit short!

Best Wide Toe Box Cushioned Hiking Boots

Here are some excellent wide toe box hiking shoes that have more cushion and a little more stability than in your typical barefoot shoe. I make regular use of this type of shoe for long hikes or difficult terrain. They are also favorites for people doing ultra hikes or multi-day backpacking treks. And they can be great for people who want a wide toe box but are not comfortable in the other features of barefoot shoes.

Altra Lone Peak – Extra Wide Friendly

The Lone Peak from Altra is a well loved zero drop trail and hiking shoe line that features a generously wide toe box and flat but cushioned outsole. They are one of, if not the, best in terms of technical specs and have been used by many on major thru hikes and ultra trail running distances. A friend of mine borrowed my All Weather Mid (shown above right) to hike Kilimanjaro last year, and Justin wore the waterproof Lone Peak to backpack Yosemite!

I find the shape and width of them to be an almost universally good fit and the thick sole can be a life saver for long distances or if you just need more sole underfoot. They are secure through the midfoot and heel, but leave plenty of room in the toe box – just the way I like it! And the standard Lone Peak even has an extra wide option that has more upper material, to allow for a thicker foot.

Lems Trail Shoes

Lems carries a variety of trail shoes with a wide to aaaalmost extra wide toe box and thick, durable outsoles. My personal favorite is the waterproof Lems Boulder Boot Grip. They have a generous fit and strike a good balance between structured traction and flexibility. I wear mine all the time when it’s cold, wet, and muddy. Justin also is a huge fan of Lems hikers both on and off the trails.

If you want something even more rugged, there is the Outlander boot, and coming soon – the Trail Thrasher (low top). There is a removable insole if you need more space, and you can swap it out for a sheepskin one to stay extra cozy. Please note that the insoles that come with these boots has a 3mm compressible heel rise.

• Runs small – They have a reliable sizing guide, so follow that. I usually size up a whole size in Lems boots.
• Fits wide feet – I recommend choose the Widest Natural Shape models, unless you have slim feet.
• High volume – I wear leg warmers with mine usually to fill in the extra space.

One thing I love about Lems shoes is that they have a lot of space above the toes, which makes them feel very roomy without being too big on the rest of the foot.

The Rediscover from Bahe is a moderately cushioned, more traditional-feeling wide toe box hiker. It has an 18mm total stack height and is fully waterproof, but it is fairly stiff and takes some time to break in. Particularly around the ankle is not as soft as I would prefer, but if you are someone who wants that structure and stability the Bahe Revive is a good wide toe box alternative. Oh, and they have grounding capabilities!

Fit & Waterproofing Hacks

When it comes to barefoot hiking boots I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Here are a few of my best pointers that will improve the fit and longevity of your shoes.

• Err on the larger size – feet swell when you hike so it’s a good idea to buy a half or whole size bigger than you typically wear. This also allows for socks and insoles.
• Grab an extra pair of insoles – with thin barefoot shoes these can really come in handy if you’re on extra hard terrain or your feet just need a break.
• Learn how to waterproof your shoes – waterproof shoes all have an expiration date and will start leaking eventually. If you get yourself some waterproofing products you can really increase the usefulness of your boots.

Crafted from sturdy yet lightweight rubber that is vegan-friendly, the Ranidae boots are robust without being heavy or clunky. They have a thin microfiber lining so you don’t have rubber directly on your skin, and I love the functional grippy outsole.

They are more structured than a packable rain boot which means they don’t fold up tiny for your backpack. But the upside is that the rubber is more durable and the boots maintain their upright shape.

The Ranidae boots come in both kids and adult sizes. Starting tomorrow September 6th, you can get green, orange, and yellow in all sizes! And the word on the street is that there are even more color options coming this fall.

At $99 a pair for adults and $69 for kids, the Ranidae is not overly expensive (at least these days…), especially considering that their sturdy construction means they will last you for many, many rainy days to come. And even more importantly – Wildling has announced it will be covering the import fees for their US customers, so you can now order without any surprises.

What I Love About Them

The Wildling Raniadae achieves something I previously thought was impossible in the rain boot sector: they’re easy to slip-on, but they hug your ankle on the sides so that they’re not flopping around. These boots are still high volume (we’ll get into that more later), but are shaped to be as secure as possible.

They have, IMO, the best fit and toe box shape of any barefoot rain boot on the market. They are also definitely the highest quality, with the best traction. Ranidae is even Samantha-approved as being extra wide friendly!

This is a rarity in wide toe box rubber boots, both for kids and adults.

Sizing & Fit

This is applicable to both the kids and the adult models!

• Runs slightly large – All the toe room makes them feel roomy. I sometimes size up to a 38, but a 37 is plenty big for me in Ranidae.
• Wide to extra wide toe box – Spacious enough for natural splay on most foot shapes.
• High volume – Even though the sides hug your ankles, there is a lot of vertical space in these. There’s also no removable insole, but adding your own is easy and I recommend it for low and medium volume feet.
• Suitable for many calf widths – These have a wide opening.

If you know you have lower volume feet, I’d definitely suggest adding an insole to your Wildling order. They are all great. Felty is quite thick and warm, Woolly is a thinner option that’s still cozy.

Wildling also has a cozy 98% wool sock that pairs perfectly with their Ranidae boots and is anatomically shaped with toe space (shop the Calor socks in the EU here).

I have worn mine with those socks, but I really prefer toe socks so I most often wear a wool toe sock liner with leg warmers over the top of them. Leg warmers also help the boots fit more securely without flopping, which is helpful in rain boots that don’t have laces or adjustments.

After my run-in with a chronic foot issue, I learned that the shoes we wear have a big impact on how our bodies feel. I’d like my children to avoid the issues I had, so we choose shoes that allow their feet to develop normally. That means they only wear barefoot kids shoes.

What Are Barefoot Kids Shoes?

“Barefoot” shoes are so-called because they let your feet move as if barefoot. Most shoes, even kids shoes, inhibit foot function with stiff soles, cramped toe-boxes, and heels that push your body into an unnatural position.

By contrast, barefoot kids shoes let their feet move naturally! This is especially important while their bodies are growing and developing. And don’t worry if your child has flat feet – this is normal and usually corrects itself over time if they continue using their foot muscles!

As a general rule, kids barefoot shoes are:

1. Foot shaped, with a wide toe box (won’t squish their toes)
2. Zero drop, or completely flat (for natural alignment)
3. Flexible enough to roll into a ball (so foot muscles stay strong and supple).

Wildling Shoes are the most unique barefoot shoe for kids that I have come across, and they really feel like being barefoot because of the uniquely flexibly sole. We particularly love the Nittugo with a wool insole as a breathable non-stinky option – perfect for kiddos who won’t wear socks. The winter models are made with wool and are surprisingly warm for how light and thin they are (get an additional felt insole for max warmth).

But there are limits to the water resistance – they will get soaked if you stay in water long enough and then can be difficult to dry (I swear by my vent dryer!). And if used for rough play the sole can start to come undone and develop holes in the fabric upper over time – but they last much long than you would think for how light and flexible they are.

We love Wildling best for comfort and casual use, in that domain they are hard to beat.

Wildling works for a variety of foot types because the sole flattens out and molds to your foot shape. They’re also designed to leave plenty of space in front of the foot so your toes never touch. Wildling makes some of the best barefoot shoes for infants and toddlers.

Keep in mind that the fit varies by model, and models change seasonally so always read the sizing & fit description on Wildling’s website before purchasing. In general this brand fits medium width and high volume, so we usually get the extra insole for my son with low volume feet.

Shapen’s barefoot kids shoes are adorable, sturdy, and have lots of toe room. They also come with removable insoles, and we’ve found that they have a solid fit that works well on many kids’ feet. They’re also freaking cute, and the color and even the glitter have held up well for our testers (I had a bunch of samples I shared with neighbors and friends to test for me).

Besides being on the pricier end, my only real complaint is that the sole isn’t as flexible as I prefer for young children (6 and below) whose bones are still developing. They’re great as a durable school shoe, but I prefer them for older kids.

We’ve never had them fall completely apart, but the thinner uppers take more of a beating than the more durable barefoot kids brands listed here. My kids still love them because they’re so comfy!

Another challenge with Mukishoes is that inventory changes seasonally and it can be hard to plan ahead. They do small batch production, often using limited quantity of materials, so you never know exactly what they’ll have available. Mini Moss is a perennial model and boots come back every fall, otherwise things change each season.

Our kids’ favorite is the Dash model, which has a cool look, good fit, and is durable. Splay also sells the Explore model which has a cheaper price point, but the canvas doesn’t hold up as well.

When my kids were younger the Explore was our go to, because their feet were growing and they trashed their shoes anyways, so we didn’t mind! But now that they’re a little pickier about style, the Dash is what they prefer.

Over time Saguaro has become one of my kids’ favorite brands. The knit sneakers (above right) are really soft, comfortable, breathable, and have a generous toe box. For the price, we get a lot out of these shoes. They’ve also been adding more “cool” sneaker options over time that we’ve had pretty good luck with, but the velcro straps tend to fail while the rest of the shoe still has a lot of life left in them.

The materials are not as high quality as other brands’ listed here, but they’ve worked well for our needs and are a good balance between function and affordable.

Reima sneakers and sandals are excellent for the price. They have a good fit and feel, they’re durable, and my kids love them. All while still being quite a bit cheaper than many brands! Just note that they are on the slimmer side, so best for long thin feet and not wide feet.

If that’s your kid’s foto type, the Astelu is the perfect everyday shoe. They are soft and breathable (no stinky feet issues even when worn without socks), they pull on with elastic laces, and they have held up really well for us. We adjusted the knot on the elastic lace to tighten them a bit, and they’ve been perfect for my younger son who is constantly on the go.

Dillon Leather

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5 – Men’s 15

The original Dillon in knit has been one of my go to white sneakers the last year and a half. They have a comfortable fit with just enough width and volume over the toes while still looking stylish – but the knit gets dirty easily and I’ve had a hard time keeping them clean! So it’s good news that they are now available in leather because that is so much easier to keep clean.

The Dillon Leather is a classic everyday white sneaker with subtle details and a grippy sole. You can also use them for court sports and light exercise. They feel sturdy but not stiff and Justin and I are fans both of how they look and how they feel.

Sizing & Fit:

• Wide fit – should work both for average and wide feet.
• True to size.
• Medium to high volume, but should work for all volumes because of the laces and removable insole.

Breckenridge

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5-12

The Breckenridge is a classic lace up boot style that toes the line between dressy and casual. The outsole can be used outdoors, but isn’t so rugged looking that you couldn’t wear them with a nicer stylish outfit. They remind me a lot of the old Vivobarefoot Gobi Hi that is no longer available, but with a wider toe box. In fact, this is I think the widest toe box Xero has put on a boot. They feel great to me!

The leather upper on the black color is soft and nice and makes for that leather boot look and feel. But be warned that the grey feels different – I find it plasticky and stiff and I was not a fan. I’m not certain what the brown will be like, but my guess is that it is soft based on the natural looking finish you see in the photos.

Except for the grey colorway, I am a big fan of the Breckenridge!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Medium to wide fit
• Medium volume – should work for all volumes with laces and a removable insole

I find the fit on them to be pretty solid and likely to fit your average person. The toe box is wide enough for my wide feet, but not likely to work for extra wide feet. And they are semi-fitted through the heel and ankle so I don’t feel like I’m flopping all around.

Ridgeway Chelsea

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5 – Men’s 15

The Ridgeway Chelsea uses the same rugged outsole as the other Ridgeway models with a classic chelsea leather upper. They are Xero’s take on the Blundstone style of boot that mixes function with fashion. And you certainly could use these boots for hiking, as a light work boot, and as an everyday shoe.

The toe box has good volume over the toes and is wide, but not as wide as the Lems Chelsea if you’re familiar with that one. They are also a little bit stiffer and heavier, but the outsole has better grip and tread.

Both are good boots in my opinion, but I wish the Xero Ridgeway was a smidge wider in the toe box and both Justin and I found the back to be hard and stiff against the achilles. If you are looking for a more rugged chelsea with a robust outsole and upper, this will be your speed. But probably not an ideal choice for people who want that light soft barefoot feel.

Sizing & Fit:

• May run small – they were nearly true to size for me, maybe a quarter size small. But for Justin they were a full size too small. He seldom needs larger than a men’s 13 but will need a 14 in the Ridgeway!!
• Medium wide
• High volume over the toes and midfoot – they come with a removable insole but I needed to add an extra one to fit.

Dillon Slip-on Youth

Canvas | Sizes US 12 Kids – 4 Youth

I love my Dillon Slip-ons, and my kids often want slip-ons of their own like their friends have. So we were both excited when Xero came out with the easy canvas slip-on sneaker that also is at an affordable price point for barefoot kids shoes.

They’re lightweight, cute, and comfortable. We’ve only had them about a month, but so far the canvas has held up to scuffing and the rough and tumble play my son is nearly constantly engaged in. And while they’re on sale the next two weeks they are only $44!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Medium to wide width
• Medium to high volume (removable insoles)

My son has wide feet with average volume and these fit him fine without being excessively floppy or tight. He has a bit of extra room and you can remove the factory insole, so they will work for some kids with high volume feet as well. Sizing was true for us.

My daughter lives for dressing up and putting on fancy shoes! She has worn Little Love Bug for years now and at 7 years old is about to size out of them, which will be a sad day. Her favorites are the pretty flats and boots, which double for us as Sunday shoes.

My two little boys have worn the low top sneakers and oxfords, and both were hits. Out of all the shoes we own, both boys choose their Little Love Bug shoes a lot. And considering that we are a family of barefoot shoe testers with SO MANY SHOES that is saying something.

We appreciate that the sneakers open up really wide for easy on and off. And thanks to the double velcro straps both boys get a really secure fit despite having different foot types.

Overall, all our LLB shoes have held up quite well for us. Since my kids also wear them for daily activities they do end up with scuffs and some dirt marks but that’s OK because shoes are meant to be worn! We found the sneakers comfy right out of the box, but the flats needed a few wears to break in.

Sizing & Fit

Little Love Bug shoes are offered on a few different outsoles, and it’s important to understand the differences between them. They all are barefoot shoes with a zero drop outsole and wide toe box, but those marked with “Barefoot Sole” have the widest toe box. In our experience, the models on the barefoot sole fit as follows:

Ditch The Supportive Shoes This Year

Your kids’ feet are likely already more than capable of supporting them in all of their activities, so this year you may want to rethink the supportive footwear.

Choosing shoes that are flexible, unrestrictive, and lets their feet spread will naturally foster a strong, functional foundation for lifelong foot health. 

Of course this does not apply to all children at all times, but if your child is overall healthy and developing normally barefoot shoes are likely a better option for them! Here are our top picks for all different types of school shoes.

DIY Kit Review

Ever since getting into barefoot shoes a few years ago I’ve wanted to try my hand at making my own. I have always been into maker crafts (weaving, sewing, etc.) so this venture was really a perfect marrying of 2 of my interests; DIY and barefoot shoes. I chose to make a pair of simple low moccasins to use as house shoes and am quite happy with how they turned out.

Lougaya videos cover each step in detail, in real time while she shows you exactly what to do and what to avoid. The videos are broken down into each moccasin making step from drafting the pattern, cutting the leather, and so on. They’re clearly labeled, easy to follow, and you can watch them as many times as you want! Mine were made using “The Base” which gives you a base model to make other styles like boots and lace ups.

Before getting started, I watched portions of each step to get an idea of what I would be doing and then did 2 practice moccasins with some cheap felt to test my pattern. Click through the slides below to see some in progress pictures of the pair I made.

I immensely enjoyed watching these come together with my own two hands. I have a whole new appreciation for custom-made shoes and the time, labor, and skill that goes into creating them. I also love that they are repairable, resoleable, and I can add onto them or change them up in the future if I’d like. Sustainability at it’s finest!

Baby Moccs Review

I sent my baby’s foot tracing and measurements to Earthing Moccasins and had a pair of 100% sheepskin booties made for him. He hardly wore anything else on his feet all winter; they were a perfect fit! They kept his feet warm, were easy to put on, and they stayed on well too. I liked being able to flip the ankle cuff up when I was wearing him on cold outdoor walks too. They were everything he needed in the winter, without unnecessary “support” while he was learning how to walk.

Runner Moccasins Review

Anya’s custom Runner Moccasins have been accompanying her on many walks this spring. The thick leather is holding up really well, and allows for the most ground feel and barefoot-like experience you can get while still wearing footwear.

They have a glove-like fit and the leather will stretch with use but it doesn’t happen super quickly. They prefer to make custom adult shoes fit snugly so that they can mold to your foot, but that means they can feel snug at first. If you prefer some more wiggle room, make sure you request additional space or plan on stretching them yourself.

Mukishoes is very transparent about their materials and production practices. You will always find exactly what materials each shoe is made from, and even where the materials were sourced. They partner with local, family-owned businesses which allows them to ensure working conditions are fair and everyone involved earns a living wage.

Their spring and summer barefoot shoes consist primarily of organic cotton, hemp, and linen. There’s also year-round models made with leather or cork, and in the winter you can find the addition of wool lined boots. To take things one step further, Mukishoes uses deadstock fabric in the production of their shoes. If you aren’t familiar with that term, it means they use offcuts or surplus fabric from the production of other textile goods that would otherwise go to a landfill. Mukishoes Kids Fit Type:

• Plateau shaped toe box
• Wide fan shaped fit good for wide and extra wide width
• High volume (but adjustable with laces & velcro)
• 2.5mm sole

We find the kids’ models to have a pretty universal fit, in fact they are one of our top 10 kids barefoot shoe brands! My kiddo has narrow heels and low volume feet, but with laces cinched they stay secure and she has plenty of toe space. Anya’s son has thick, high volume feet and he also fits wonderfully in Mukishoes with the laces looser.

Mukishoes Adults Fit Type:

• Mountain shaped toe box
• Straight fit best for average to slightly wide width
• High volume (but adjustable due to laces)
• Unisex sizing – there is a general “Grown-ups” range that does not differentiate between Men’s and Women’s.
• 3.5mm sole

I have extra wide sloped shaped feet so Mukishoes has never been a perfect match for me. I opted to size up from my usual for extra width, and thanks to the unstructured nature of the sole it expands to fit me comfortably. I still think Mukishoes is better suited to average and wide width feet, but I appreciate that the sole is adaptable to different shapes and widths.

Both models use highly flexible natural rubber outsoles that have excellent ground feel, and both can work for low volume feet with laces tightened or with an additional insole.

Matching pink barefoot high tops with my daughter? Yes, please! The Hope model from Mukishoes has a hemp upper that is naturally dyed using onion skins and the color is lovely. I am a crafty person and really enjoyed reading all about the natural dye process for Hope here. It’s paired with a pale yellow natural rubber outsole that has amazing flexibility and ground feel with no break-in period required. The lining is a teal colored organic cotton. We both found these comfortable from the very first walk, and isn’t it amazing that they’re DYED WITH ONION SKINS??

Challenge Review

Anya and her son are wearing the Challenge model this spring. It fits the same as the Hope model above, but is made with organic cotton in a pretty blue/green hue. The inner lining is also organic cotton in a fun purple color. The upper fabric is denim-like in feel, and is a teensy but stiff out of box but wears in quickly (if it didn’t her picky son wouldn’t touch them!).

We aren’t a big fan of socks for babies, as they can restrict foot development and inhibit the nerves on the soles of their feet. Most baby barefoot shoes can be worn without socks, and when not in shoes just be barefoot! Older children might want socks for warmth, comfort, or to prevent stinky shoes. Here are the foot friendly socks we recommend for older kids.

As parents and caretakers we worry about our child’s comfort, but the truth is our own feet are probably a lot more sensitive than our children’s. So even if your feet feel a little cold inside the house, most likely your child would still prefer being barefoot over having socks on.

Why Babies Have Flat Feet

Babies are born with soft bones that shift around as they grow and develop. Because babies begin to put weight on their feet as infants, you will usually find a thick fat pad in the middle of their foot. This protects the forming bones of the midfoot so they can walk and stand without doing damage!

You might have noticed your child has a chubby flat foot – this is why. Most kids lose this fat pad around the age of 5 and have visible arches by around 6 or 7, so it’s perfectly normal for small children to have flat feet.

What To Look For In a Baby Shoe

These guidelines are similar to what we want in a barefoot shoe for kids and adults, but for babies they should be even less structured. Look for the softest, most unrestrictive shoe possible.

An ideal baby shoe is:

• Flat – no heel, no arch support, and no toe spring.
• As thin and flexible as possible so baby can sense the ground.
• Wide enough not to squish any part of the foot.

Tip Toey Joey‘s origin story is not unheard of. Like many barefoot shoe brands – it starts with children. The founders made the original pair of TTJs for their first child and her footprint became the inspiration and guiding design for the brand. Undoubtedly, these are some of the best looking kids barefoot shoes we’ve seen. They have vegan and leather styles for all seasons in three size categories with some key differences between them (more on that below!). Now, here’s the lowdown on all 3 categories of Tip Toey Joey barefoot shoes for kids!

Run and Play EU 22-32

The Run and Play line is for sizes EU 22-32 (roughly preschool to early school-aged). They are full of kid-approved color combos and styles that let littles blend in with their peers without sacrificing foot function.

The walled rubber outsole and toe cap (on canvas models) protects the uppers, and the padded heel collar is comfortable right from the start. Canvas models will need a little wear to break in, but the leather models are soft right away and only get softer. And they all feature either velcro or elastic, for easy on/off. While my kids only tested sneaker models, I think the girl’s ballet flats look like a beautiful option for dress shoes.

Durability

Because Run and Play shoes get into the school aged crowd, you have to look at their durability. Anya’s rough-and-tumble, but also fashion conscience, 7 year old son put a pair of Ollie’s to the test. While he loved them, he also nearly destroyed them!

A couple of years would have made all the difference, younger children likely will not wear through them so fast. But this kiddo was wearing them hiking, in snow, and all over the playground. For us these are more of a fashion/lifestyle shoe in the older kids sizes and maybe not the best choice as an everyday hardcore play shoe.

Overall still a huge win because they looked cool enough for him to forget about the Nike sneakers he desperately wanted. We would love to see these cool barefoot sneakers in an even bigger size range and a little more durability.

Sizing and fit: Average to wide toe box, sloped shape, all foot volumes.

Walk and Balance EU 17-23

The Walk & Balance line from TTJ is a great choice for a walking toddler. The outsole is just a few millimeters thick and very flexible. There’s no break-in period for the uppers, and they have a clever little piece of elastic on both sides of the heel that keeps the shoe in place while walking. Different models come with different closures and if you have a difficult time getting shoes on your child’s foot I recommend the velcro style that can open all the way up for easier entry. Both styles fit wide chubby toddler feel well.

This line also has some lovely dress flats for girls if you’re in need of special occasion shoes! Patent leather options are not easy to come by in barefoot shoes, but you can find them at TTJ.

Sizing and fit: Wide toe box, Plateau/Square shaped, high volume

Born and Grow EU 14-17

The Born and Grow line features some precious little shoes meant for the tiniest feet. My youngest was too big to wear these but my daughters had fun putting them on their dolls! They are soft and cute with leather soles and feel a little more structured than a moccasin. They have the same little hidden elastic on both sides of the ankle as the toddler shoes.

We recommend the softest barely-there shoes for babies and new walkers, so these are not our first choice as a baby shoe. However, for special events and occasional use they are ok. You can also massage and stretch the leather to make them softer before putting them on. Here are a few of our top picks for baby/toddler shoes.

Caring for Wildling Shoes

All models this season have an integrated membrane for water resistance. In addition, most models are also pre-treated with a waterproofing spray. That means your Wildlings are more functional for weather, Autumn weather! To maintain the water resistance, you can reapply waterproofing spray throughout the season.

Wildlings with 100% wool uppers should not get treated with any type of spray – they are naturally water repellent. The best way to clean your Wildlings up when they get dirty is to let them dry completely and then knock or brush any dirt off. I have found that the ones with wool uppers repel dirt pretty easily, but the fabric ones need more frequent brushing out of dirt. The new dense weave canvas cleans up beautifully!

Wildling just launched their Repair Center where you can have necessary repairs done to your Wildlings that are under warranty. Just contact customer service and they’ll give you next steps based on your individual needs.

Sizing & Fit

Thanks to the unique construction of Wildlings, they can fit a variety of foot shapes. They have a squared off toe box and the materials are really flexible. There’s nothing rigid about these shoes. I recommend using the Wildling Fitkit to find your size and referencing each model’s sizing notes on the product page. You can also use the EU/US size conversion chart that has recommended foot lengths (this was updated in April 2022 so if you’ve ordered previously make sure you check the new conversions).

Yew

$119-$149 | Wool Lined | Water Resistant Membrane | Sizes US Kids 7 to W 14 / M 13.5

The most water repellent model Wildlings has ever produced is Yew. It has a more rugged hiking boot vibe thanks to the ring eyelets and extra long laces meant to be wrapped around the ankle. I found it a little tricky to thread the laces through the tab on the heel, but it’s not necessary to pull them back out each time. There’s plenty of length to loosen the laces and leave them threaded!

The uppers are a very densely woven cotton canvas (in the perfect olive green shade!) that helps keep water out. Inside you’ll find felted wool which adds another layer against the elements. To top it all off, there’s also a integrated membrane AND water flap to give these the best chance possible at keeping your feet dry! Just remember these are water resistant and not waterproof and should not be expected to function as such.

Overall Yew feels slightly more substantial than Wildling models I’ve worn previously, and also roomier. I think they are fantastic. I love the aesthetic, the functionality, and the feel. Like all Wildlings, they’re super lightweight, flexible, and have excellent ground feel. You cannot find a more minimal boot for cool weather.

Chestnut

$79-$139 | Wool & Hemp | Water Resistant Membrane | US Sizes Kids 3 to W 14 / M 13.5

Are these the cutest shoes in the entire world? Quite possibly. Just look at them! They are precious! The uppers are a gorgeous blend of undyed wool and hemp and they are lined with wool too. They open up nice and wide, are easy to put on, and the laces give a secure fit. I don’t usually use shoes that tie with my little babies, but these are so adorable I don’t mind the extra minute it takes! You can swap them for elastic laces if you want, too.

The outsole on the toddler sizes (EU 18-22 or US 3-6) is slightly different. Same material, same wild flexibility, but there’s no split on the bottom and no wrap around on the toe or heel.

Modeled here on my 8 month old, I purposely got a size larger for room to grow. He isn’t close to walking yet so the extra length isn’t an issue and there’s plenty of room for a Wildling Wooly Insole and even socks when the temps drop further. I am hopeful they’ll still fit in the spring when should be walking!

Chokeberry

$79-$139 | Felted Wool | Water Resistant Membrane| US Sizes Kids 3 to W 14 / M 13.5

I opted for Chokeberry this season because I wanted a pair of Wildlings that was wool inside and out so I could wear them through the winter. For what essentially feels like a slipper, they are surprisingly functional. The internal membrane makes them water resistant, and the addition of a wool insole means I can comfortably wear them down to about 20F/-7C.

They also fit extra wide, so I have plenty of space for warm socks in them in my usual size. The cool petrol green color has a neutral look to them but still add a bit of color. Like all my Wildlings, I expect them to be a go-to this cool season.

Another wool-on-wool option for the cold season is North Wolf.

Pine

$69-$119 | Vegan | Water Resistant Membrane | US Sizes Kids 3 to W 14 / M 13.5

For my oldest son I picked Pine. These shoes are made of an organic cotton/linen blend and have the internal membrane for water resistance. They are neutral and subtle with only a few details in the laces and the inside pattern.

My son likes everything blue and refuses to wear shoes that aren’t completely soft, so Wildling is a natural choice for him. The Pine is not as warm as the wool options, so works best as a transitional fall shoe.

I am always smitten with the cold weather options from Wilding and this year is no exception. There’s some great new features, more protection from the elements, and a more durable canvas. All without compromising the amazing flexibility and lightweight construction they’re known for.
