I highly recommend removing Splay shoes from any best-of lists. I have bought two pairs now. One before they switched to a “new water-based” that was supposed to be better. But my original Freestyles AND my 101’s (which were supposed to have the new/better glue) failed in less than 6 months of ONLY indoor, office environment wear. By failed, I mean that the glue holding the soles to the upper gave out in so many places that the sole eventually started “flapping” around. I cannot possibly recommend them to anyone. (I feel scammed…)

Hi Stefan! I think I understand what you’re referring to. In a previous year these winter boots were made on the same sole material but with a slightly different shape (3mm difference). This is what you’re calling the original – it was the first sole Nevada was ever made one as well as some others. And then the following year they modified it slightly. But the currently available Winter and Winter Neo, for example, are both on the newer modified. As far as I can tell, you can’t buy any models on the “original” shape anymore directly from Be Lenka. In any case, I don’t believe this will be an issue in the next season as all boots of one style will only have one name and one shape option. Some people with square feet noticed the 3mm difference, but for a lot of people that space was not missed – it was taken out of the outside front edge, so not exactly 3mm narrower in the way a lot of people think about width.

Hi,
I love all the advice and the reviews you provide here, and thank you for all the effort you put into this website.
I have a question and a potential correction. In your “Be Lenka Barefoot Boots Review” post, you say that:
“Some of the Nevada models say Neo in the title – all this means is that variation was produced in a different facility. They are the same boot! This is true for all the models that say Neo in the title”.
However, the Nevada Neo are a few millimeters narrower: e.g. size 41 is 96mm in Neo versus 99mm in the original model (Be Lenka customer service confirmed that the new version has “a slightly adjusted fit”). I recently tried on the original Nevada boots in that size and really liked them (except that I would like a bit more cushion, maybe just a more substantial insole), but didn’t buy them as I wanted some more time to think until the colder weather arrives and to see if they release some new autumn/winter models. But I’m now worried the Neo model might not fit me or at least not offer the kind of splay-freedom of the original one. My feet are 253-255mm long and around 97-98mm wide.
Have you maybe had the opportunity to compare the width and the feel of both models? Do you think I’m right to worry about the Neo boots? I know that this one measurement is not all that matters when it comes to overall toe box size – maybe shape adjustments correct for it – but 3mm is not negligible in the world of barefoot models.

The reason they didn't make it on this list specifically is because they don't have as wide of a range of styles like women's dress, sandals, kids shoes, etc.

I am so surprised that you didn’t list Lems Shoes among the barefoot shoes brands. They offer a range of high quality, long lasting minimalist shoes, including vegan shoes and they’ve been around for a long time, longer than many of the brands you listed. They stand behind their products, offer very easy exchanges and returns and are just great people. Please consider adding them to your list.
