I was chatting with Manitobah and they’re saying all their shoes are zero drop now! They said: There were some a season or two ago that had some arch support but they have since been discontinued for some time now.

Thank you, Anya. I ordered a Xero Alpine Pull-On. This seems to be an answer to prayer because I was concerned many of the popular brands would squish my feet. I prefer “barefoot” zero drop shoes and sandals, and had no idea there were boots. I had a pair of clunky snow boots for probably about 20 years, and they just “died” because the treads came off. I also ordered some socks to go with these boots and some cowboy boots I bought previously. I copied the link to this page in my Notepad. Very helpful.

Thanks for keeping this list updated! I wear truly barefoot shoes daily and for activities, but I have really cold feet (Reynauds) and I need a warm winter boot for times when I am standing around outside. The bottoms of my feet get cold and turn bad colors in standard barefoot shoes because the soles are so thin. A liner is not enough.. Sadly, I think I need some serious space between my foot and the ground. We get a lot of weird up and down weather in my area. For example, it is 15F today but the streams are still running. So I prefer the boot to be waterproof, at least on the bottom portion. I have a narrow heal and softer boots tend to slip down. I am considering Mukluks with waterproof spray. How terrible will those boots be, considering I am used to barefoot shoes? The Tundra Esc caught my eye, but they are not waterproof, and I just can’t spend that much if the shoe does not do *everything*. I also read that people’s feet slip in the Tundra Esc because of the way the ankle is laced. I like that both of those options come up high on the leg, although I suppose this is not a dealbreaker. What can you recommend for me?

In reply to Shaina. I wouldn't go for the WW in this case. The Mukluks can stretch and the wider one will also be wider in the heel.

Your review was excellent and super helpful! I’m looking at getting my first pair of barefoot boots, and I don’t have any experience with sizing. I measured my foot with the book, and it’s 89mm at the widest point. I want to get a pair of Steger Mukluks, and their 8W insole is exactly 89mm. The 8WW is 95. Which one would you recommend I go with here?

In reply to Julia. The Pull-on Alpine is so much more flexible and soft! The next closest would be Shapen Cozy, but I find the Alpine Pull-on to be warmer.

Hi! I have a pair of Xero Alpin boots and I find that the soles are too stiff, causing pain in my left foot. I was wondering if the Alpine Pull On has a more flexible sole? I have a worn out pair of Xero Makias but they don’t make them any more. Any other suggestions for a warm boot with a flexible sole? I was considering the Manitoba Mukluks but they don’t look like they have a big enough toe box. Thanks!

In reply to Kristina. If you are used to the original Lems Boulder boot, the Breck has MUCH better traction. I personally don't recommend the Lems Boulder for any kind of inclement weather, but the Boulder Boot Grip, Breck, and many of their other boots are built on a much more functional outdoor sole. Between the Breck and the Xero Alpine I would say the Breck is better on ice, though they are similar.

Hi Anya – thanks for this comprehensive list! I live in Minnesota (for context about the weather) and I’m comparing the Xero Shoes Alpine Snow Boot and the Lems Breck Boot insulated. I’m a big fan of Lems and use my Boulder boots a ton, but I guess I’m concerned about the traction and tread? I know you rated both the Alpine and Breck as good for ice, but would you have a preference between the two? (I’m okay with the Breck not being zero-drop). Thanks so much in advance!

In reply to Taphath Canon. I have used spikes with good success on my Lems boots and my Be Lenka boots. I also think they would work well on the Vivobarefoot Tundra and Steger Mukluks, but those boots are overall bulkier so I would need a bigger size of them.

Would any of these boots work with microspikes? I’m a hiker/backpacker and am searching for boots what I can use with spikes and snowshoes. Microspikes can squeeze boots if they are too soft.
