For years we struggled to find kids winter boots that were both good for their feet and practical for real weather. Finally there are options that have a wide toe box and flexibility. We did the research so you don’t have to!

Here are the best barefoot winter boots for kids that are practical for playing in cold, mud, snow, and rain.

Why Barefoot Boots for Kids?

We live in a cold climate with temps often dipping below zero Fahrenheit. In order to get outside year round, practical shoes are a must. But after my run-in with chronic foot pain I’ve learned that we also need shoes that don’t hurt our feet! This is especially important for little feet that are still developing.

The barefoot winter boots listed here are what I feel confident putting on my own children, knowing they won’t damage their growing bodies and will still protect them from the elements. This is the same criteria I use for all my kids shoes.

Before we head into my recommended winter shoes, here are a few tips for staying warm in the coldest of temps.

Winter Hacks

The following are winter essentials in our house. They keep us moving and grooving in our wide toe box boots all through the cold season.

• Wool insoles (Felty is extra thick, Woolly is thinner) – I keep an extra pair handy to add to boots that aren’t quite warm enough. They make a HUGE difference.
• Wool socks – my younger son wears Plus 12 socks and my older son wears Creepers toe socks.
• Waterproofing products – Kids that are tough on shoes wear through waterproofing quickly. It’s worth having something on hand to up the water resistance mid-season.
• Boot dryer – I have used this exact one on my floor vents (with fan air, not heat) for years. If you don’t have floor vents you can use an electric dryer. It has SAVED us because nobody likes putting on cold, wet shoes.

My oldest son has been wearing Vivobarefoot snow boots for the past 7 years. They’ve been the only pair he’s needed for rain, snow, mud, and cold weather. I love that they come in a huge size range from toddlers all the way to big kids. This year the Tracker AT boot has extra insulation, including a felt-lined insole (finally!)

The outsole has good traction that’s meant for all terrain, complete with a toe guard to prevent inevitable wear. And the top cinches down to seal out snow and keep them securely on foot. If you live in a very cold climate, you may consider using a sheepskin or wool insole in place of the Vivobarefoot one for more warmth.

This nylon boot is easy to pull on and has a generous toe box that should fit most kids’ foot shape. They are a good balance of light and flexible, with a practical outsole and protective toe guard. I also like that they are somewhat fitted through the ankle so that they aren’t floppy.

We love everything about them, except that they aren’t waterproof. For some families that may be alright, but for my kids it’s a dealbreaker. They only have one winter boot in their closet, and they simply spend too much time out in the snow for them to not be waterproof. If you are ambitious, you can waterproof them yourself!

Oh Wildling Shoes, how we love your sock like feel and cozy warmth! These are another big favorite in our house because they are so lightweight and comfortable, but surprisingly warm and weather resistant.

I recommend choosing the models made entirely of wool (upper and lining) for the most warmth, and adding a wool insole to your order. This combo keep my kids and myself cozy and dry. You’d be amazed at how practical a shoe this minimal can be! However they aren’t snow boots, so you can still get snow in the top and if you spend long hours in wet conditions water will likely get through.

Wildling’s winter models tend to change each year. For the 2025-2026 season the Koselig, Atento, and Kindur Sten are all made of wool and are great for shorter outings or less extreme winter days.

The Softstar Phoenix is a supremely cozy sheepskin boot, handmade in Oregon. I wear the Phoenix in adult sizes, and the quality is excellent. They are luxurious boots for serious warmth! You can choose custom colors, which my son loved. The lower portion is made of smooth leather and naturally water resistant, but the shaft of the boot is suede and water can soak through. For my rough and tumble kiddo, this proved to be an issue. So for serious snow play I recommend using something like SnoSeal on the upper.

Another thing to note is that they have a side zipper but otherwise can’t be adjusted. My son liked to wear these without socks (one of the beautiful things about genuine sheepskin!), and after the leather broke in they were a little floppy on him. He walked right out of them into the snow once! So while they are delightfully warm, they work better with socks or for thick, high volume feet.

Be Lenka has a new line of kids winter shoes out this year that we have been testing for you. They have a generous toe box shape, are waterproof, insulated, and functional for winter activities. But we find them quite stiff this year, and wish the outsole was lighter and more flexible. For some families this will still be a good option, but our kids testers are kind of clomping around in them.

The Ailo boot is very thick and insulated. It has a velcro closure, and a higher volume fit. I wish they had some adjustability over the arch, but like how warm they are. The Zippu is an alternative with velcro closures for a more secure fit. They are not as insulated, but will work for lighter snow and rain play.

Feelgrounds has kids vegan Chelsea and lace up boots with a warm microfiber lining. They’re not snow boots or as warm as some others here, but they will keep your kid cozy and dry in a lot of weather. The Patrol boot (left) has a waterproof membrane, while the Chelsea (right) is water-resistant.

They’re a little bit stiffer than I like in kids’ shoes, but durable and have good grippy tread on the outsoles. And they have the added bonus of looking a little dressier, so they can be worn both for outdoor use or to nicer occasions.

Zeazoo makes delightfully soft and light barefoot sheepskin boots for kids. While definitely not as rugged or durable as the more robust snow boots in this article, they make up for it in their extreme coziness. They are so light, flexible, soft and warm!

The Will is one of our favorite because they are really wide, soft, and flexible and come in at about $50 after my coupon code. But they are not water resistant and the materials are a synthetic fabric so get wet easily. My kids use them when they don’t need a full snow boot, but want to be warm.

Ten Little has these cute and functional snow boots for toddlers and little kids! The main body is an insulated polyester material that reminds me of a puffer jacket. They can cinch closed at the top with a elastic toggle strap and the entire boot shaft opens with a large velcro closure on the side. They’re easy enough for my 4 year to put on himself! I was delighted to discover the outsole on these has some grippy lugs, too.

These are $60 and only available up to size 13, but we have hope that Ten Little will expand the size range for these in the future.

After years of testing and hundreds of barefoot shoes in my closet, I am confident these are the absolute best wide toe box hiking boots on the market, no matter where you are in the world. Hiking just feels so much better when I’m in naturally fitting boots!

Here is what I look for in my barefoot hiking shoes:

No one does outdoor shoes like Vivobarefoot. They walk a delicate balance between durable, practical and yet still flexible and thin enough to let you feel the earth. You can find boots and shoes for different terrains, climates, and seasons and all function excellently. Between all the members of my family, we’ve tried just about all of them.

My favorite is the Vivobarefoot Tracker Leather – they’re an excellent durable barefoot hiking boot with natural water resistance, lugs for traction, and a removable thermal insole. They’re IMO the best combination of barefoot feel with function. And for warm weather, the Primus Trail is the favorite in our house. They all shed mud well and are up to the task.

While the Vibarefoot hiking boots are extremely functional and durable, they feel a little stiff at first for a barefoot hiking shoe and take breaking in. We have multiple pairs in our house that are several years old and I can confidently attest to them becoming soft and flexible over time.

Xero Hiking Shoes

Xero has a few barefoot hiking boot and shoe options, but my favorite is the Scrambler line. They have a softer fit and feel than the Ridgeway line and are easy to wear. Especially the Scrambler Low EV, which is the most flexible option with a forgiving mesh upper. The waterproof options fit a little snugger (because of the membrane), so I tend to prefer the others.

Xero’s barefoot hikers are a little more cushioned than Vivobarefoot and need less breaking in, but aren’t quite as technical. However, they’ve been long lasting for me, are at a lower price point, and I appreciate the medium thick sole for just a bit more between me and the ground.

• Works for most foot volumes from low to high. I was able to cinch them well on my low volume feet.

Compared to Vivobarefoot, Xero has a straighter cut with more width and volume in the midfoot and heel area.

Freet Barefoot has several barefoot hiking boots and shoes that function excellently, including waterproof and knit options. The hallmark feature of Freet hikers is that they have a wide foot shape with plenty of space for all toes, while still being practical for outdoor use. The Chamois (above right) is new for 2025 and I am really enjoying them! The hardwearing leather upper is a little bit stiff (every waterproof boot I test is), but the fit is good and they feel quality.

Our lightweight favorites are the Howgill and Keld 2 (above left) -they are so soft and comfy with zero break in time and all the toe space. The Keld 2 is the most breathable, airy trail shoe in this list!

Groundies Portland

Waterproof | Leather | Sizes EU 36-48

The Groundies Portland surprised me this spring. They have a roomy toe box, but are still fitted through the midfoot and heel. They are structured but soft, and the outsole has decent grip. There is not as much tread on the Portland as the above options I’ve reviewed, but they are a good balance between barefoot feel and function.

They are similar to the Freet Chamois, but not quite as wide in the toe box and the outsole is a little more flexible, thin and grippy (the Freet Chamois has a deeper tread).

• Runs slightly small because of the insulation and waterproofing. I have a size 38.
• Wide to slightly extra wide
• Medium volume

Lono Wild

Suede & Vegan Option | Sizes EU 36-46

The Lono Wild is a lightweight, soft suede hiking shoe that required no breaking in and was immediately soft on my feet – a rarity among leather hiking shoes. They have just a bit of cushion under foot, but there is still a lot of ground feel. Overall, I find them delightful to wear!

My one gripe is that the laces don’t tighten super easily over my low volume feet. It’s one of those oft overlooked but still important features. However wearing them with a pair of wool socks helped fill in any extra volume and I expect that the suede will mold to my foot making the shoe easier to work with. Worth it to not have any pinch points but still have good traction and stability.

Be Lenka Barefoot – Extra Wide Friendly

Be Lenka barefoot has two good hiking shoes. The first is the Trailwalker – a lowcut option with a flexible, light outsole. These were recently updated to a 3.0 version, and this version is not quite as wide as the original so I no longer recommend for extra wide feet. The 3.0 is also more padded and feels a little more protective (I tend to bang my feet into rocks when I hike). The suede upper is durable, but soft and the toe guard protects against inevitable scuffs.

The second is the Nevada (currently only in the EU) – they have an extra wide toe box, one of the widest available, and are made of a soft but sturdy leather. They are great for people who want the width, but I do find the sole a little bit heavier than I prefer.

Sizing & Fit

• Trailwalker is true to size. The Nevada runs slightly small. I can wear my usual size and one size up.
• Fits wide to extra wide feet.
• Medium Volume, easily adjusted.

Merrell Vapor Trail Glove

Waterproof Option | Recycled Mesh & Leather Options | Sizes US Women’s 5-11 & Men’s 7-15

Merrell is a US brand that primarily sells non-barefoot shoes, but also has a few good wide toe box barefoot models. The best known, and the one that my son backpacked Yosemite in, is the Trail Glove. It has a quality outsole with toe protection, a bit of water resistance for shallow puddles, and a breathable mesh upper.

The outsole is a little bit thicker and stiffer than many of the other barefoot hiking shoes reviewed here, but that can be useful if you want a bit more protection. They also have an even heavier duty model called the Wrapt for extreme terrains. Merrell has been a solid high quality brand for me for many years, even before I started wearing barefoot shoes.

Sizing & Fit

• True to size, but I sized up for more toe room
• Slim to Medium wide – not suited for extra wide feet
• Medium volume with removable insole

I sized up for a little extra width because I have wider than average feet. They are comfy for me, but I do feel my toes on the sides of the shoe.

Softstar Switchback II – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather & Wool Lining | Sizes US 5U-13U

The Softstar Switchback II has a soft, supple leather upper and thin wool lining for a comfortable fit with no break in time. It comes in two widths to fit average to extra wide feet. The outsole is thick but flexible Vibram Megagrip – it has serious traction and durability that should last for many, many miles. And if it does wear out, you can have it resoled by a professional cobbler (this is the only barefoot hiker listed here that can be repaired easily)!

I love that they conformed to my arches and ankles easily with no rubbing, and leave space above my toes (no more pressure from above like in the previous version). My only complaint is that they come in whole sizes only, and I would fit best in a half size. Mine are a 7U or Women’s 8 and they are a little too big and long, which makes the sole feel a little heavier and clunkier. I am thinking about going to the size below, because the leather should mold to my feet even if they are a little bit short!

Best Wide Toe Box Cushioned Hiking Boots

Here are some excellent wide toe box hiking shoes that have more cushion and a little more stability than in your typical barefoot shoe. I make regular use of this type of shoe for long hikes or difficult terrain. They are also favorites for people doing ultra hikes or multi-day backpacking treks. And they can be great for people who want a wide toe box but are not comfortable in the other features of barefoot shoes.

Altra Lone Peak – Extra Wide Friendly

Waterproof Options | Vegan | Sizes US Women’s 5.5 – US Men’s 16

The Lone Peak from Altra is a well loved zero drop trail and hiking shoe line that features a generously wide toe box and flat but cushioned outsole. They are one of, if not the, best in terms of technical specs and have been used by many on major thru hikes and ultra trail running distances. A friend of mine borrowed my All Weather Mid (shown above right) to hike Kilimanjaro last year, and Justin wore the waterproof Lone Peak to backpack Yosemite!

I find the shape and width of them to be an almost universally good fit and the thick sole can be a life saver for long distances or if you just need more sole underfoot. They are secure through the midfoot and heel, but leave plenty of room in the toe box – just the way I like it! And the standard Lone Peak even has an extra wide option that has more upper material, to allow for a thicker foot.

Lems Trail Shoes

Lems carries a variety of trail shoes with a wide to aaaalmost extra wide toe box and thick, durable outsoles. My personal favorite is the waterproof Lems Boulder Boot Grip. They have a generous fit and strike a good balance between structured traction and flexibility. I wear mine all the time when it’s cold, wet, and muddy. Justin also is a huge fan of Lems hikers both on and off the trails.

If you want something even more rugged, there is the Outlander boot, and coming soon – the Trail Thrasher (low top). There is a removable insole if you need more space, and you can swap it out for a sheepskin one to stay extra cozy. • Runs small – They have a reliable sizing guide, so follow that. I usually size up a whole size in Lems boots.

Everyone will experience width differently, but I did my best to generalize it here. Keep in mind that this is organized by width in the toe box, and not width in other parts of the shoe (like midfoot and heel).

Fit & Waterproofing Hacks

When it comes to barefoot hiking boots I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Here are a few of my best pointers that will improve the fit and longevity of your shoes.

• Err on the larger size – feet swell when you hike so it’s a good idea to buy a half or whole size bigger than you typically wear. This also allows for socks and insoles.
• Grab an extra pair of insoles – with thin barefoot shoes these can really come in handy if you’re on extra hard terrain or your feet just need a break.
• Learn how to waterproof your shoes – waterproof shoes all have an expiration date and will start leaking eventually. If you get yourself some waterproofing products you can really increase the usefulness of your boots.

Why I Wear Barefoot Chelsea Boots

My feet are important to me, and I am done stuffing them into shoes that don’t respect their natural shape. I wear barefoot Chelsea boots because:

1. They have a wide anatomical toe box that doesn’t squish my toes
2. They are flat (zero drop) and don’t push my weight forward
3. They style the same as regular Chelsea boots!
4. And you can choose more cushioned options or add insoles if you don’t want a thin sole!

Most fashion footwear, like the Chelsea boots on me above right and below right, have a pointy narrow shape and heel that can really hurt! Unlike shoes that claim to be good for wide feet but still come to a point at the end, barefoot boots actually give you the space and the flexibility where you need it.

The Best Barefoot Chelsea Boots

These are my all time top picks for the best barefoot Chelsea boots!

But first – Pro tip: Chelsea boots don’t have laces, which means they can be more slide-y and floppy than other shoes. I frequently make use of a few easy fit hacks to ensure I get a perfect fit. Ok NOW let’s talk about my personal favorite barefoot Chelsea boots that have space for your toes to wiggle AND are stylish and trendy.

Xero Shoes

Leather | Microfiber Lining | Sizes US W5 – M15

Xero has two barefoot Chelsea boots – the rugged Ridgeway, which comes in men’s and women’s sizing and the Tari II. The Ridgeway has been very popular as an all-purpose functional Chelsea, that also looks trendy. I personally found them too stiff in the back heel area for my liking, but I am quite sensitive there – a lot of people in my community are loving them.

The other Xero Chelsea boot is the women’s Tari II – which I co-designed with them! I wanted to see a Chelsea with a touch more sophistication, and that something extra that makes you excited to put them. While not as rugged as the Ridgeway, the outsole is still meant to be functional throughout the season with some grip. If you have low volume feet and narrow heels, this is the best barefoot Chelsea boot for you. I am almost always swimming in pull-on barefoot shoes, but the Vivobarefoot Sensus Chelsea I can wear with no modifications. They come with a removable thermal insole that some people will want to take out (if you’re not quite as low volume as I), and the toe box width is solid! They are not extra wide, but wider fitting than other Vivobarefoot shoes I’ve tried.

They have a really sleek, outfit-completing silhouette that I love. Stylish, and still practical with an outsole that has some grip to it.

Sizing & Fit:

• I find them true to size, but they do run shorter than other Vivo shoes. So some people will want to size up or plan to remove the insole.
• Medium wide in the toe box
• Low volume fit with insole, medium low volume without insole

Lila by Anya

Leather Upper | Leather Lining | Sizes EU 34-45

When it comes to Chelsea boot styling, the Lila has been a go-to for years. I wanted something that looked more like a classic Chelsea boot than other barefoot options, so I went out and designed one! The leather paneling over the elastic makes for a more sophisticated look, so these dress up really well too. I reach for them and the Rosa boot (similar but with side zipper) all fall and winter when I really want to look good!

Lila Chelsea boots have a quality leather upper, leather lining, and leather insole – all chrome free and vegetable tanned without the use of harsh chemicals. It takes significantly longer and is more expensive to tan leather in this way, but it’s safer for skin and is softer/more breathable than chrome tanned leather.

The outsole has a rubber bottom for a bit of grip, but they are not intended for rugged use. And it is a bit thicker and stiffer sole (because it’s entirely leather) than some barefoot Chelsea boots, so if you want a real flexible feel you’ll probably like the others here better!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size, but slightly short for some. I wear my usual size still.
• Medium wide – suitable for average and wide feet, but not best for extra wide feet.
• High volume above the arch, so I added tongue pads to mine to get a secure fit (just be aware that tongue pads are semi permanent and don’t come off easily).

Lang.S Luna

These were an unexpected favorite from Lang.S (formerly Tikki), which has recently started making adult shoes. They have that ample toe box room both in width and in height – that means no toe pinching from any direction. They are lined with a soft chrome-free natural leather, and are so soft and lightweight. I also like the sole, which has a traditional welt and feels more classic.

I love that the Mukishoes Chelsea is a lower cut than most other wide toe box options, which gives you different styling options – easier to wear with jeans than taller Chelsea boots! They are also very light, flexible, and come with a real wool lining – not too thick, but nice for cold days.

They can get a little wrinkly/frumpy because they are so soft and unstructured, but it doesn’t stop me from styling them with lots of outfits. I reach for them often when I want a quick and easy look that’s still stylish. Mukishoes Chelsea is unisex.

Sizing & Fit:

• Slightly small – I have a pair both in my regular size and a size up – both fit but the smaller size is a bit short.
• Medium wide – best for average and some wide feet. The outsole is very soft and can flatten out a bit under wider feet as they break in, but don’t feel super wide when brand new.
• Medium volume – the ankle opening is slim and lower cut, so some people say the front edge cuts into their ankle a bit. But it helps keep the shoe from being floppy even on different instep heights.

Lems Chelsea

Hands down my favorite wide toe box Chelsea boot with cushion is the Lems Chelsea. They are really lightweight, have a very spacious toe box shape that can fit most foot shapes and widths, and they are soft and cushioned. Justin and I both have had great luck with ours – the quality, fit, and feel are all on point.

Also from Lems is the Chelsea Tuff. The brown color has a fluffy collar and lining that is surprisingly warm. The sole is quite thick (makes me feel so tall!) but flexes at the toe. Really well-made waterproof shoes with a grippy practical outsole. The black color has no fluff, but is still insulated.

Groundies

Leather | Velvet or no lining | Two Width Options | Sizes EU 36-43

Groundies has a few different Chelsea models, and all are well made and stylish. My favorite is the Camden, above left, which comes in Barefoot and Barefoot+ (extra wide). They are light, so flexible, and have a taller shaft for an edgier, slim-fit look. The Sienna, above right, has a trendy chunky look, and I like them but they’re not quite as flexible or as forgiving in the toe box.

The Camden has a slip-resistant outsole, which is handy in the fall and winter, and a thin velvety lining for a little bit of extra warmth. They feel great on foot! I love them in both widths myself since I don’t have an extra wide foot.

The Barefoot+ width is extra wide friendly and higher volume – they’re one of the best wide options if you have trouble fitting into most barefoot shoes.

They are heavier than the Groundies Camden and other barefoot Chelsea boots – some people love that extra durability and traction though. They certainly are good quality!

Be Lenka also has the Mojo chelsea boot that we really like. It’s not quite as wide as as Entice, but is still plenty wide for me and features a comfortable knit ankle opening.

• Medium volume – they do not have a removable insole, and people with high volume feet often find them tight over the top of the foot. They can loosen with wear though!

For years I’ve been sketching on napkins the shoe designs I’d love to wear but that didn’t exist yet. Because I have a dream to change the status quo of footwear.

So it’s my pleasure to introduce to you my most recent collaborative design, the Xero Tari II – a sophisticated barefoot Chelsea boot that is both classy and kind to your feet!

The Backstory

When Xero Shoes brought me on to help design their flagship Chelsea boot, I knew exactly what I wanted to see in the final product. I love a good old barefoot Chelsea boot that doesn’t hurt my feet, but I wanted to make something that excited me every time I put them on and every time I caught my reflection in the mirror. There’s no reason we can’t take better care of our feet and love what we wear too!

Xero’s design and production team brought the magic of marrying a pleasing aesthetic with the practicalities of barefoot shoe production, and before I knew it we were on to sample testing.

It’s incredible how many small decisions have to be made to pull together a final product. There are countless shades of leather, metal buckle finishes, and lining materials to choose from. And then there’s the question of fit.

The Xero team may have gotten more than they bargained for bringing me on for this project, because I had a lot of opinions on this topic. The ankle opening needed to be more sleek, the heel needed to be more secure, the toe box shape had to be just right. I have a shelf full of prototypes from each step along the way!

We all wanted the best fitting boot possible, so the product team went back to the drawing board again and again. But in the end it paid off! Because the Tari II is the versatile, stylish, and foot-friendly boot we set out to create.

Meet Tari II

Leather | US sizes 5 – 12 | Ships from US or EU

The Tari II is a barefoot Chelsea boot that has elastic goring and an inside zipper, for easy on and off. They do the double duty of being both a closet staple and adding something extra to your outfits.

They come in the basics of black and brown (basic, but not boring) and have a velvety microfiber interior for all-season breathability. The outside buckle is functional, and can be loosened for more ankle room. They also come with a removable insole for a little more adjustability.

But we didn’t stop with just black and brown…

Extra Special Taupe

In addition to helping behind the scenes with the Tari II boot, I also had the chance to design my own colorway – complete with special details and finishing touches. Doeskin is the final member of the Tari II collection, so you can have that something special in your shoe collection! Still practical and wearable, but a cut above in terms of style. Currently Doeskin is available only on the US website, but worldwide shipping is available.

I knew from the beginning I wanted to make a taupe boot. There’s something about taupe that catches the light and brings subtle sophistication. Especially with gold detailing. It’s the extra touch I crave in my barefoot shoes.

Besides the visuals, Doeskin also differentiates itself from the other colors with its more breathable microfiber lining that is suitable for transitional weather (think early fall and even into spring) and doesn’t make you sweat. Then when temps drop, add in some wool socks to keep wearing them all season.

I would recommend spraying them with a protectant before wearing (and every so often throughout the season) so that any scuffs or spots are easy to buff out. Pretty shoes aren’t meant to sit in the closet!

Fit & Sizing

The Tari II will fit best on feet that are:

• Average to wide width (not likely to work for extra wide feet)
• Medium volume at the arch – They also fit my low volume feet well, and there is a removable insole for higher volume feet
• Medium width at the ankle – the buckle and elastic goring provide some adjustability for thicker ankles

The sizing is true for these – I am wearing a size 6.5, which is equivalent to an EU 37. This is the size I most often wear in Chelsea boots, and they fit with enough room for medium thick socks.

In my opinion, Chelsea boots have got to fit wide enough in the toes to work for a wide variety of people, but tailored enough so you aren’t slipping out of them. I worked with Xero to hone in on a more feminine fit type for the Tari II that is more secure through the heel while still retaining a natural shape.

See here a comparison of the updated Tari II (left) with the original Tari boot (right). We refined the original shape to be better fitting through the midfoot and heel, and to have more toe room.

One final thing to watch out for if you have sensitive skin – the top edge of the boot can feel hard when they’re brand new if you wear low cut socks/no socks. I found that it softened after a couple of wears, and you can also wear socks that go above the top of the boot (my preference).

Styling

I style the Tari II the way I would any Chelsea boot. They can be worn casually or dressed up. Because the leather on all 3 colors has a matte finish, they blend in well with just about any style.

The height is designed to be versatile with many different cuts of jeans and skirts/dresses. Not too tall, not too short. My favorite combo is cropped wide leg pants with cute socks peeking out the top (I’m a toe sock girlie). Check out the gallery below for outfit inspiration!

Barefoot boots are the only way to keep my feet happy in the fall/winter seasons. I just can’t handle scrunched toes and clunky rigid soles! If you also hate stuffing your feet into uncomfortable boots you are in the right place. Thank goodness there are practical and stylish wide toe box boots that let your feet move naturally, and still protect you from the elements – your feet and body will thank you!

In this article I share my top ten favorite barefoot boots after years of testing on myself and many others. It has all the up to date information on what’s new and coming, and there are options with cushion if you only want the wide toe box! So read on to see the best barefoot boots for every day wear in the fall and winter.

Why I Wear Barefoot Boots

I wear barefoot boots because:

1. They are only type of boot I’ve found that has a truly anatomical toe box shape (not pointy and tapered like most boots) and after years of chronic foot pain I just need that!
2. They help me feel more stable in the elements because they are lower to the ground and flexible – I can control my body more easily than in thick, stiff boots.
3. And the thin sole is optional – There are barefoot boots with some cushion and support, and you can use insoles in most of the others! You can also find here a few more Wide Toe Box, But Not Barefoot boots.

A couple other tips: I highly recommend getting comfortable with your insole options! They can really increase the usefulness of your barefoot boots by adjusting fit, warmth, and cushioning levels. And keep in mind that your foot type will affect what works best for you – learn more about your foot type and how to measure here. To help, I’ve shared practical sizing info along with my recommendations in this article so you can shop easily!

Now let’s get to it. Here are my top ten tried-and-true favorite barefoot boots in order. Every brand listed offers women’s, unisex, and men’s styles for everyday use.

Peerko

What I Love About Them: Peerko boots were instant love as soon as I laid eyes on them. And 5 years later, still my most worn! They’re the most stylish and versatile barefoot boots I have, not to mention they’re lightweight and have a wide forefoot. They tend to fit people really well while looking great! The Go model is continually the best selling boot we carry at Anya’s Shop.

They have different cuts of boots with different linings for different degrees of warmth, so you can get something right for your climate. The lace up boots are my go to, but I also love their tall boots for dressier outfits. They’re all so easy to wear with my outfits, dang comfy and look equally classy on both men and women.

A few other tidbits – I use Renapur’s on them to keep the leather sleek and shiny through the season. The outsole is meant for everyday use and is not a rugged winter outsole (if that’s what you’re looking for, head to my practical winter boots guide or read on). And they have vegan options!

Sizing & Fit Type:

• True to size – I am wearing my usual size 37 in most of my Peerko boots, but I size up in the wool lined Frost (which I always do in boots with warm linings!).
• Wide fit – wider than your average barefoot shoe brand, but not extra wide.
• Medium volume, but adjust well on my low volume feet and the lace ups can loose for high volume.

What I love About Them: Be Lenka has a very versatile selection of barefoot boots, ranging from dressy and stylish to rugged and warm. All are quite practical with durable slip-resistant outsoles and they have a good fit with a wide toe box.

Besides having so many options, Be Lenka boots stands out for their top notch quality. They’re my go to when I need something functional that has plenty of space for my toes. Just be aware that the soles on Be Lenka boots are a little heftier than you might be used to with barefoot shoes. Sizing & Fit Type:

• Run slightly small – I size up to a 38 in all models.
• Wide to extra wide fit
• Medium to high volume – I usually need an extra insole for my low volume feet.

What I Love About Them: The Vivobarefoot Gobi boots were my very first barefoot winter boot back in 2017 and I used the heck out of them! They wore like a dream, and I love that Vivobarefoot boots look kinda urban and cool. I love the Hiber – they’re like a puffy jacket for your feet! And they have a dressy looking chelsea boot coming this year!

Vivobarefoot boots all have grippy outsoles and high quality uppers, but tend to be on the stiffer side when brand new. I’ve found that they take a bit to break in but then are soft, flexible AND durable.

And I learned the hard way that Vivobarefoot boots aren’t very warm unless you swap out the insole for a better one (check out my insoles guide for how to fix this). But overall we’ve had great luck with the quality and longevity of our pairs.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• Runs slightly long, but I wear my usual size. Exception is the Waterproof boots which fit snugger.
• Average width – the Hiber and Explorer Mid have the most forgiving fit and fit my wide feet well. The Gobi boot is on the narrow side for me.
• Medium to low volume

Lems Shoes

What I Love About Them: Lems Shoes has some really great barefoot boots with a little bit more cushion than the other brands listed here. I especially love the Chelsea boot and the waterproof Boulder Boot Grip is excellent for rain and mud. This winter you can expect some new tactical boots from Lems!

The thicker sole makes Lems a good brand for people who want more cushion or for days when your feet need a break. I also love that Lems have a lot of vertical space above the big toe. Plus, the look is classic and cool. Justin and I both love our Lems and wear them quite a lot during the cold months.

Note that not all Lems Shoes have the same shape. I recommend choosing their Wide or Widest models (they have a fit guide for each listing).

Sizing & Fit:

• Runs small in our experience – I usually go up a size in my Lems boots.
• Fits wide or extra wide feet if you choose Wide or Widest!
• Higher volume – I usually need to add extra insoles or socks, because I have low volume feet.

Shapen Barefoot

What I Love About Them: Shapen Barefoot makes stylish everyday boots for men and women that have a generously wide toe box and roomy fit. They’re great for people who want the style but need wider than what’s typical for barefoot shoes!

Winter models such as the Frosty, Cozy, Urbaneer, and Lynx are made on a grippier, more robust outsole than the other lifestyle boots. This year we have the Glam, Divine, Ivy, Cozy, and Maverick in the US at Anya’s Shop!

Sizing & Fit:

• Fits roomy and slightly big. I wear a 37 and have lots of room.
• Wide to extra wide fit – these fit Samantha’s extra wide feet well!

Xero Shoes

What I Love About Them: Xero Shoes makes several practical barefoot boots for fall and winter with a classic aesthetic. New this fall is the Breckenridge which I am really enjoying in black. The fit is super comfortable and they style well. Justin loves the Denver boots. But they cater to an average to narrow toe box width and a wide midfoot, which means they aren’t a great brand for my foot type.

But they are a favorite for people who are new to barefoot shoes because they tend to have a lower price point than other brands and a wide range of options. They also have a huge fall/winter sale that’s worth checking out!

Sizing & Fit: We find Xero to run true to size mostly for Justin, but I size up more often than not in their boots. In general when a boot is waterproof or lined it fits more snugly, so if you have wide feet I would also suggest sizing up in Xero. They also fit fairly high volume.

Wildling Shoes

What I Love About Them: Wilding Shoes is another brand that makes me giddy. All of their models are fabric with an extremely flexible sole and one of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn! You wouldn’t expect it because of how lightweight they are, but the Wildling winter models made of wool are pretty warm and with an extra wool insole feel great for most of the winter.

They’re also more durable and practical than you would think. The water resistance is enough for some rain and snow, and I find that I love wearing them on nature walks and light hikes so I can feel all the texture beneath me.

Sizing & Fit Type: I highly recommend you consult their size finder when ordering instead of ordering your usual size. Each model comes with a specific fit guide, so make sure you read that as well. Typically Wildlings cater to an average width foot, but there are always a few that work for extra wide feet.

You can expect your Wildling Shoes to have a squared off toe box so the outer toes don’t get squished and a flexible outsole that can adapt to a wide variety of foot shapes. They do tend to fit high volume feet best – if you have shallow feet I would recommend getting the wool insole for a better fit (works great for us!).

P.S. Some people are surprised by how long their Wildings are – this is intentional and as long as the shoe is secure and not flopping the extra length shouldn’t be an issue.

Mukishoes

What I Love About Them: Mukishoes is another extremely flexible and lightweight barefoot shoe brand with genuine ground feel. While not quite as flexible or “second-skin” like as Wildling shoes, they are more mainstream looking so I end up reaching for my Mukishoes a ton throughout the season. They feel so great and also look fashionable!

You can find Mukishoes barefoot boots seasonally, usually around September each year. They have high top sneakers, wool lined combat style boots, chelsea boots and I love all of them! We carry our favorites at Anya’s Shop.

Sizing & Fit Type: Mukishoes has an average width toe box, but the flexible outsole and soft upper accommodates some wider feet.

For me the chelsea boots fit slightly smaller than other brands (because the ankle opening pushes your foot a little forward) but the lace ups are pretty true to size. This is a brand that works great for high volume feet, so I wear an insole in all of my pairs because I have low arches and skinny ankles.

Zaqq Barefoot

What I Love About Them: Zaqq barefoot boots look amazing, they honestly have the widest selection of barefoot boots I’ve ever seen. And they are still soft and comfortable on foot. Like Peerko, they seem to have a universal fit that works well and looks great on most people!

My personal favorites are the Riquet and Equity – both very sleek. They’re a wonderful blend of mainstream style with really soft, flexible soles. We carry several styles in the US for easier access, because the Zaqq website is difficult to navigate for people outside the EU. This fall, we are also carrying a new style, the Qlare, that I am pretty excited about!

Sizing & Fit Type: Zaqq shoes are pretty much smack in the middle in terms of fit. Slightly wider than Vivobarefoot, they fit an average to wide feet, medium to high volume.

Some of their dress models have a more tapered toe box, so I recommend looking at the product images closely to avoid that. But the vast majority of their shoes have a natural shape to them.

Lang S by Tikki

What I Love About Them: These boots are fully leather, breathable, and flexible. They have a really nice fit with a generous toe box that is roomy in all directions (above the toes too!). The Kombat boot has a thicker outsole that looks cool and helps keep you farther from the cold ground. But it’s still super flexy. I really enjoyed them last season, because of how comfortable and stylish they are.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• Runs on the big side. I still wear 37, but have extra room.
• Extra wide toe box.
• Medium to high volume – I need an extra insole in mine for a secure fit.

Groundies

Leather | Sizes EU 36-48 | Available At:

What I Love About Them: Groundies does stylish barefoot boots for men and women very well. They have a few different available outsole types, but my two favorites for boots are the GO1 and the GX1. The GO1 is very flexible and has the widest fit, while the GX1 is a little thicker and more rugged – which can be nice for boots in the cold season. Both are high quality and long lasting.

Be aware that Groundies has three different toe box shapes – Regular, Barefoot, and Barefoot+ (extra wide). The “Regular” is tapered and a more traditional shape, so I recommend filtering by Barefoot or Barefoot+ so all you see are the foot shaped options.

Sizing & Fit Type: Groundies Barefoot models have an average width, but their Barefoot+ line is extra wide and runs a little longer in length than the same size in Barefoot width. Sizing is true and consistent otherwise, so not too many surprises between styles. The boots fit medium volume, but can often work for both high and low volume. I usually wear a size 37 in both widths of Groundies boots, but the Barefoot+ is roomier.

Runner Ups

The above are my top ten most worn barefoot boot brands for everyday style, but there are some other really great barefoot shoes that deserve a mention. And depending on your foot type and preferences, they might be perfect for you!

Rosa & Lila by Anya (me!)

I designed two wide toe box versions of a classic western ankle bootie that we carry at Anya’s shop called the Rosa (with side zipper) and Lila (pull-on chelsea). I wear them all the time because they style really well and look mainstream compared to a lot of barefoot shoes. I really wanted something more classic that didn’t squish my toes, so I just went ahead and made my own! The leather upper is really high quality and gets better with age, and the natural leather lining feels soft and breathable on the feet.

They do have a thicker, stiffer sole than a lot of the softer barefoot shoe brands, especially when brand new. The quality leather insole breaks in after a while, but they’ll never be as soft as some. For me this is an ok compromise when I want to dress up!

Sizing & Fit Type: They have a more average width with a higher volume upper. I use tongue pads in mine to get more security. Sizing is true.

Zeazoo Dingo

What I Love About Them: Hands down my most comfortable barefoot boot is the Zeazoo Dingo – they feel like slippers and look like Ugg boots! I like that they are so light but still dang warm and slip on easily. And it’s not just me who loves them, they have been super popular at Anya’s Shop and around the world for people in all climates. They’re a dream!

But because of the sole type, they’re not great at keeping snow and water out and not as durable as some of the other options here. For me they are the perfect walking and quick-errands boot in the winter, but if you tend to drag your feet or kick curbs you might bust a seam.

Sizing & Fit Type: The Zeazoo Dingo has a wide straight fit and a plateau shaped toe box. They run big and many people size down (especially because the thick lining tamps down with use).

They are generous around the ankle and arch, so work well for high volume feet – but I did fine in them with my low volume feet and skinny ankles after sizing down one from my normal size. I also wear thick socks in them to bunch up around the ankle for a little more security. If you need bigger than a size 42 you can request a custom size from Zeazoo.

Feelgrounds

Feelgrounds is an all vegan brand with a couple boot option! The Patrol is lined with fleece, and they come with both a fleece and a cork insole. They also come with a grippy outsole for all-weather conditions, and are gusseted up to the ankle for waterproof-ness. They’re entirely vegan and have a pretty thick sole that some people find stiff. But for wintery weather they are practical! You can also find a chelsea boot in several colors from Feelgrounds.

Koel

Koel (previously a kids’ brand) has recently added several lovely women’s styles. They’ve been growing the last couple of years and we now carry the Koel Fiona (above right) in the US at Anya’s Shop! They fit an average foot best and are medium to low volume. I don’t need any fit hacks to get a good fit, but they are only just wide enough.

Gaucho Ninja

Gaucho Ninja barefoot boots are goodyear welted for durability and longevity. They are designed in the UK by Gaucho Ninja and completely handmade with vegetable tanned leather in Spain by a family-run artisan factory. There’s so much to love about these boots! The leather is beautiful and high quality giving these boots a substantial feel to them. The tongue is gusseted, but unlined so it doesn’t feel bulky.

Ahinsa

Ahinsa boots are really light, flexible, and have a wide forefoot – just what I like in a boot. They are also all 100% vegan. The uppers are naturally water resistant, and they wear really well. I have yet to see any scuffs or fading of the material even after lots of winter use.

Ahinsa shoes run a teensy bit shorter than most other barefoot boots, so I am kind of in between a 37 & 38. Both my Ahinsa barefoot boots are a size 37, but I wish I had gotten a 38 in the Winter model that has a fleece lining. The “Comfort” models from Ahinsa are all the same as the Barefoot ones, they just come with an insole that adds a heel lift and arch support (wouldn’t be truly barefoot with this).

Magical Shoes

Magical Shoes is a Polish brand that makes super flexible barefoot shoes. Their boots are super comfortable and lined with warm wool or fleece. They also have a lot of vertical toe space, so they tend to be a home run when it comes to the comfort for a lot of people. I find their sneakers and boots run quite small, so I recommend sizing up one in them.

Clogs are all the rage right now. And while I really appreciate a wide, flat shoe – The Birkenstock Boston (and the like) are very stiff. I find flexible, minimalist soles to be much more comfortable and they support my long term foot health as well!

Here is your guide to the why behind barefoot clogs and which ones are my favorite.

Why I Don’t Wear Birkenstocks (Anymore)

Birkenstocks are a hot topic, and my take on them has both enlightened and enraged more than a few people. Here’s why I no longer wear Birkenstocks, including the popular Boston clog.

Birkenstocks are great as a pain relief shoe – in fact I am genuinely glad they have become so popular because they are much more natural than typical shoes. But they are SO rigid and supportive that they immobilize the foot – kind of like a cast. And I learned from experience that immobilizing your foot on a consistent basis leads to muscle atrophy.

Ideally we are all working toward feet that function well without so much support! Especially if you are not currently in pain or recovering from an injury, it doesn’t make sense to put a healthy foot into such a rigid shoe.

By contrast, a barefoot clog bends and moves with the foot, which helps keep the tissues supple and strong. Oh, and they have a back strap for better security!

And that’s why I moved away from my Birkenstocks and now embrace minimalist shoes as a long term strategy for my foot health.

Barefoot Clogs to Wear Instead

But I love a fashion moment, so it tickles me that there are now on-trend barefoot clogs! Here are 5 options that capture the aesthetic (and give you plenty of toe space) but are light, comfortable, and freeing for your feet.

(and side note, you may want to use a spray protectant like this one on your clogs to keep the suede looking fresh.)

Butterfly Your World Clog

We followed the size chart to order a US 7.5 Wide in the clogs for Samantha and a 7 Wide in the sandals, and they fit just as expected.

Mukishoes Soca

The Soca only comes in one width – medium wide – so not as good for extra wide feet. BUT they are already made and will get to you much faster than Butterfly Your World. They also have a beautiful construction and the leather is so soft and nice on the skin. They are flexible, breathable, and so cute.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• True to size, but I sized down for a more secure fit on my narrow heels
• Medium width – they fit my medium wide feet well, but likely wouldn’t work for an extra wide foot.
• Medium volume, but adjustable straps work on different foot volumes

This type of shoe construction is usually tricky for me to get a good fit in because I have such slim heels. They are a little less secure than I would like, but with the two adjustable straps I get a good enough fit and they are comfortable. And did I mention they’re dang cute!

Barebound Ikaros

The Barebound Ikaros is new to the barefoot shoe scene, and I am pretty excited about them! They have a flexible sole, but with more cushion than the other options here. They also have a nice tall toe box so that your toes don’t get squished from above. And the finish and feel of them is really on point – I can wear them with sweats or a nicer outfit and feel pretty cool both ways.

Sizing & Fit Type:

• True to size – I sized down to a 36 because I have narrow, low volume heels (I usually do that with this style of shoe!)
• Medium width – these are on the wider side of medium width, similar to Peerko shoes if you’re familiar.
• Medium volume, but you can adjust by loosening the strap or adding an insole.

Birkenstock Lutry

Suede | Sizes EU 35-48 | Ships globally from your local Birkenstock domain

The Birkenstock Lutry is unique from the Birkenstock Boston because it has a removable insole that, once taken out, will turn this normally stiff and supportive shoe into a barefoot shoe! Because they were designed to be used with the insole, you likely will want to add your own insole. Otherwise the shoe might feel excessively roomy and unpleasant because the inside is unfinished.

But they have great style and Birkenstocks quality! Which really is excellent – take it from a California girl who wore Arizona Birks for about 20 years before switching to barefoot shoes

• Sloped shape

Tomar Creation

Tomar Creation’s Twist model is a barefoot clog with a soft, supple leather upper and flexible sole. They are on the higher volume option, so felt a little too roomy for Stacey (modeling above) who has medium-low volume feet. But they match the clog aesthetic while being significantly more flexible and dynamic.

The Twist is available in many different solid colors and can be customized with a matching strap and buckle detail (which is what we did). They also come standard with a little flower decal on the side, which you can request to be left off. The main thing to know is that these are handmade in the EU, so shipping can be a little longer depending on where you live. AND if you customize them then they are non-returnable.

What if I need some cushion?

All of the flexible barefoot clogs we shared here have a thin sole. If you want to experience the foot freedom of barefoot clogs with a little more cushion, I recommend exploring some of the insole options below that you can add to any of the clogs I’ve shared:

• Cut to shape – 5mm thick
• Breathable Cushion – 3mm thick
• Flat socks – 5mm thick
• 3/4 Insole Cushion – 3mm thick

When using insoles like these I recommend going with the largest available size and trimming them to fit your shoes.

And you also want to factor in the space that these insoles take up inside the shoe. If you have high volume feet, you may consider sizing up in your clogs so the insoles fit comfortably.

Fit hacks for clogs

Clogs can sometimes feel floppy because there are no lace adjustments. A good fit is really important to me, so I make use of the following hacks to make my clogs fit perfectly:

• Tongue pad – this sticks inside the top of your shoe to fill in extra space and make them fit more securely
• Moleskin – This can be used on the heel strap or anywhere there is a bit of extra space or rubbing
• Any of the insoles linked above can also help if you have low volume feet

Less Barefoot?

While Splay shoes are a fantastic entry point for those new to the barefoot movement, the changes might not appeal to the more dedicated barefoot enthusiasts. Most models now have a less flexible sole with a transitional feel, and a removable insole for optional cushion.

This makes them ideal for those who want to ease into barefoot footwear, or who are craving more classic styling. They still are flexible and wide, just not as much as they used to be (except for the kids Explore! Those are unchanged).

Splay will soon be launching an updated Freestyle with a wider and softer fit. If you’re someone who wants a true barefoot feel, stay tuned for that!

Improved Quality

The newly redesigned models are a marked improvement over older versions in terms of design and quality, but they aren’t intended to rival high-end sneakers. Splay shoes are best suited for casual wearers who don’t mind a sneaker looking slightly worn over time. Don’t expect them to hold up as well as $200 shoes, but for $60  – $100 a pair, they offer good value for their price.

Another great improvement to Splay shoes is that they all have a removable insole now! Something I’ve been pushing for from barefoot shoe brands for years. That also gives you the option of two different cushioning levels in the shoe.

Overall Sizing & Fit

While there are some differences between models, overall sizing is as follows:

• Runs slightly small, and doesn’t come in half sizes. I typically wear a women’s 6.5 and a 7 works well for me.
• Average to wide fit – adult models have lots of toe space compared to traditional sneakers, but may not suitable for extra wide toe splay. Kids models have a slim heel but wide toe box.
• Medium to high volume – this is where you get the most variation on fit between models, so read on for the lowdown!

Now let’s get into the individual models!

The Rev

The Rev is probably my favorite new shoe from Splay. They come in both low and high-top versions with a cool, modern look that is reminiscent of Vans shoes.

The design strikes a balance between functionality (as grippy skate shoes) and aesthetics, with a medium stack height that isn’t as thick as the new Runner 1 but still not super thin. I appreciate that they have a lot of vertical toe space, which makes the toe box feel roomier and more comfortable.

My one complaint is that the high tops take forever to put on and off. Neither of us wear high top sneakers very often for this reason, but it seems to take a particularly long time to do the laces on Rev hightop. Once on they’re really comfortable! But the low top Rev is the one I wear most often because I’m impatient.

Overall Justin and I both are fans and find the fit comfy and wearable.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: While the shoe is on the wider side, it’s not suited for extra-wide feet. The rubber sole wraps up around the edge, which makes for a cool look that both Justin and I appreciate, but it limits the stretchability of the canvas upper and makes it less adaptable for extra wide foot shapes.
• Medium to high volume: The Rev fits true to size and works best for medium to high-volume feet. The laces allow for customization, making it possible to tighten the shoe for low-volume feet (like mine). I noticed this caused a bit of bunching though.
• Vertical toe space! The Rev offers good vertical space above the toes, which is a common issue with many shoes. While it doesn’t quite match the spaciousness of the Runner 1, it still provides more than enough room to feel comfortable.

Streetstyle Slip-on

The Streetstyle Slip-On is the Splay shoe I have had the longest time to test. As a slip-on, it’s easy to throw on and go, and the canvas material softens quite a bit over time. However, they have a really high-volume fit that was tricky for me and lots of others. I had to add two tongue pads to the top of the shoe to keep my foot from sliding out!

Justin also had trouble with them being super wide in the heel, but if he wears them with socks they aren’t too slidey. He is less interested in using fit hacks to modify shoes, so socks it is. Despite the issue of them being too loose, we like the design and I find that I wear them on often.

In summary – high volume friends will be happy! And if you’re not high volume, expect to need to make use of tongue pads to get a good fit. Overall I still like the Streetstyle Slip-On because they look cool, are comfy, and easy to put on and off.

Sizing & Fit

These fit similarly to the Rev, just without laces for adjustability.

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: A wide fit that feels generous because there is a lot of volume
• High volume: No adjustments means that medium and low volume feet may have too much room and need to use a fit hack.
• Vertical toe space: Space above the toes in the Streetstyle means more wriggle room!

The 101

The 101 is a leather sneaker that builds on the same foundation as the Rev and Streetstyle Slip-on, but with a more elevated design and materials. The leather upper gives it a more polished feel, making it a good option for those who want a higher end sneaker look. It also feel sturdier, is easier to clean, and offers better durability for long term wear. However, it does feel stiffer initially and takes a bit to break in.

While I love the look, I found these to be the least comfortable of the bunch when brand new. The thicker material makes the whole shoe feel narrower so my toes rub on the sides of the shoe. They’ve been breaking in over time and becoming more comfortable, but I still prefer the Rev and Streetstyle.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium to wide fit: A wide fit that feels a little less roomy than Rev and Streetstyle because the leather is stiffer and thicker.
• High volume: On the high volume side, even with the removable insole inside. But I can cinch the laces to fit.

Runner 1 

The Runner 1 is a transition-style shoe with the thickest sole of all the Splay models and retro vibes. It is less flexible than the other models too, and doesn’t really have any ground feel. But if you are someone who wants zero drop and toe space in an otherwise typical sneaker, they’ll help you on your way to happier feet.

I like them alright myself, but wish the sole was more flexible. I don’t mind the thickness, I just wish it moved with my foot more. And I think the toe box could be a touch wider. But I’d wear them over New Balance sneakers any day!

Running Shoe? Despite its name, I personally wouldn’t use the Runner 1 for running or gym use. The upper is thick and not particularly breathable, and the outsole isn’t as flexible and grippy as I like for gym use. To me, they are a lifestyle shoe.

Sizing & Fot

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width – more toe space than a typical sneaker, but not as roomy as the other models. Best suited for an average width foot.
• Medium to low volume: These have a much closer fit than the other styles and feels a lot more secure on my low volume feet. You can remove the insole for more space.
• Vertical toe space: Runner 1 has a rounded shape with a lot of room above the toes.

Freestyle 2.0

The Freestyle 2.0 is your basic lace up sneaker. They have the thinnest, most flexible sole of any Splay shoe and come with a removable insole. For me the style is nothing special, compared to the other Splay styles, but classic Vans or Keds wearers will appreciate it.

I find the fit on the Freestyle to feel on the narrow side (for a barefoot shoe), because the canvas rubs. I actually feel like I have more room in the Rev and Streetstyle because those models have a lot more vertical space in the toe box. But the outsole is thinner and more flexible than those other models.

The Freestyle sneaker is already going through an update, and will be re-launched this year with a wider toe box and softer feel. I have a feeling I will appreciate this update!

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width: IMO these are best suited for average width and not wide or extra wide feet.
• Medium volume: These have an average volume and fit me fine with the insole and laces tightened a bit. Will fit higher volume feet without insole.

Kids Explore

The Kids Explore has the same thin, flexible sole as the Freestyle but a nice roomy toe box for growing toes. They are one of the cheapest kids barefoot shoes available, and come in all kinds of cute colors and prints. We have followed the Explore shoes from Splay ever since they were launched on a crowdfunding platform in 2018 – my son wore those shoes to death! The velcro is easy, they’re affordable, and they don’t squish their toes. Win all around.

Another great thing about the Explore is they are an accessible shoe for kids with mobility limitations.

The only issue we’ve ever had with the Explore is that the canvas can fade and look worn over time. For the price of these shoes, this is not surprising to me. And we were never too concerned about our shoes looking worn, so my boys just kept wearing them!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Extra wide toe box, slim heel and midfoot: This makes for a secure fit without compromising toe space. If your child has a thick foot throughout, the shoes might feel too snug in the middle.
• Medium volume, with adjustable velcro.

Overall, Splay has done a commendable job with their redesigned lineup. However, if you’re a barefoot purist looking for the most minimalistic experience, Splay might not be the best fit for you. That said, for those transitioning to barefoot shoes or seeking an affordable, casual option, Splay is a strong contender.

I used to wear dress shoes every day for work. They looked nice, but of course they had pointy toes and raised heels. I gave them all away after I could no longer tolerate the toe squishing and how it affected the rest of my body.

Since then I’ve missed the feeling of looking really sharp! So adding Tomás Sullivent dress shoes to my closet is no less than a wardrobe renaissance for me. They have an uncompromisingly wide toe box, but otherwise look and feel like a high end luxury dress shoe.

Meet Sullivent’s Actually Wide Dress Shoes

Sullivent is a new brand of beautifully hand-crafted dress shoes with all the details you’d expect from a luxury item. But where they differ is in their shape. Sullivent shoes have an anatomical shape that actually mirrors the foot and does not squish the toes. This is a godsend for people who need to look nice, but can’t handle the toe crunching or who have wide feet and can’t fit into most shoes!

And the best part is when you’re wearing them they don’t look as out of place as you might think. You’re the only one seeing that top down view – from the side they look like a designer label dress shoe! Unique, yes. Trendsetter, totally. But they’re still great looking shoes.

Specs

Besides a wide toe box, Sullivent Shoes also have the following specifications:

• Zero drop sole
• Blake stitch construction for flexibility and reparability
• A durable outsole made of rubber, leather, or a combo of both
• High end leather uppers
• Compressible cushioning for a touch of extra comfort

Tom, founder and namesake of Tomás Sullivent, has worked relentlessly with his Spanish shoemakers to modify the classic dress shoe into a foot friendly alternative.

To accomplish this they had to push the boundary on how thin the soles can be without compromising on durability. They also had to get creative to keep the footbed level (because heels can be a back wrecker) while still maintaining stability at the heel counter (so your nice shoes don’t get frumpy). The solution was an outsole thicker in the forefoot and thinner at the heel to offset a short rubber heel piece.

And finally, their use of a “Blake Stitch” allows for more flexibility than other methods used in high-end shoemaking, while still allowing a cobbler to resole them.

Sizing & Fit

Sullivent shoes fit as follows:

• Sizing is true
• Wide fit – should be suitable for those with extra wide feet or who want a lot of toe space
• Medium/high volume over the arches

I wear the same size in Sullivent as I do in Vivobarefoot, and they fit my high-volume, mountain shaped feet perfectly. I found myself cinching down the laces on the Mutinys quite a bit, so those with lower volume feet may require Anya’s handy fit hack to achieve a snugger fit.

Natural Feel

Tomás Sullivent shoes are for people who want a natural fit and feel in their dress shoes, without compromising on a distinguished look.

My pairs took about a day of wear to break in – they are not a full barefoot shoe so don’t have that same out-of-the-box bendy feel to them. This structure helps them keep their shape so they look upscale even after use, while still feeling comfortable because you aren’t wearing a heel and don’t have your toes squished.

There also is a tiny bit of toe spring or elevation of the toes because of the stiffer sole (at least compared to barefoot shoes). Although these aren’t “true” barefoot design features, the effect is minimal and the toe spring helps you walk over the big toe without clomping. Knowing that these are for those special occasions when casual just won’t do, this is a reasonable compromise.

But if you are someone who is looking for for that genuine barefoot feel you may like these men’s barefoot dress shoes more. They have a similar silhouette with a lot more bend and flex.

Mutiny

I have been wear testing 3 different pairs of Sullivent shoes. The Mutiny is your classic lace up oxford. The rich brown matches any color of suit or pants, and I have worn these ones the most out of the bunch. Can’t go wrong with a classic!

Adrian

The Adrians (no relation to me) include a buckle with a hidden elastic element that provided the right snugness and flexibility out of the box. There are three holes in the strap that can adjust tighter or looser. 

The Adrians sport inlaid rubber in the forefoot that softens your step considerably. 

Pilot

The Pilot has an all-rubber sole that is more comfortable for walking on hard surfaces like city sidewalks. Although my beefy paws fared just fine clapping around New York City in the all-leather-soled Mutinys, this is an option for people who want a more cushiony feel.

How to Style

I’ve been wearing my Sullivent shoes to weddings, funerals, work days in New York City, and meetings with attorneys (who are famously fashion forward in workplace dress). At every occasion I felt dapper and confident, both because I was wearing the finest shoes I’ve had in a long time and because I was truly comfortable.

The color and design make for easy pairing with any of my suits and dress pants – they were a cinch to style with just about any color palette.

Another thing I love about these shoes is they can fit with all but the most formal dress (a tuxedo shoe is in the works), and they also elevate more casual outfits. I wore the Adrians without socks for an all-day business casual conference, and they felt and looked great.

How does Sullivent compare to other dress shoes?

Sullivent shoes sport high-end materials and construction techniques, akin to traditional luxury dress shoe brands at their price point and above (and they are resolable). Those switching from high-fashion Ferragamos might find Sullivents a bargain. And those who wear mid-tier brands like Cole Haan or Allen Edmonds should understand what you get for the $400+ price.

But in the realm of foot-friendly fashion, the closest comparison is Carets Shoes. I have a pair of black plain-toe oxfords from Carets and here is how they compare.

The main difference is that Carets have an elongated tip to give the illusion of a pointy toe box while still being wide. Carets also have more out-of-the-box comfort and flexibility in the forefoot. Those who want to fit in to the current pointy-toe standard may find this more appealing. They are also less expensive at $250.

Sullivents on the other hand have higher quality materials and construction, so look and wear more like a luxury shoe. And, as the model name “Mutiny” implies, Sullivents are for those who are comfortable bucking the trends and want to shift what society considers fashionable. I personally like that they embrace the wide shape.

I’m extremely grateful for Tom and his Spanish shoemakers for their innovative work in bringing these shoes to market. I believe there is nothing out there like it. 

As a barefoot purist, it’s hard to get me excited about putting on dress shoes. I’m happiest with nothing on my feet. But when I begrudgingly have to put something nice on, I am thrilled to have these in my closet. 

I’m very excited to see the various styles Sullivent has in the works and plan to add more to my collection over the years.

I hope many others will join me as wearers of Tomás Sullivent shoes, so together we can shift the footwear fashion standard to one that celebrates the shape of feet instead of trying to hide it.

As you may know, I am a sucker for loafers. Ballet flats can be tricky to get a good fit in, but loafers cover more of the foot so stay on better. They also are sophisticated and versatile, so thank goodness we can get this classic style with a wide toe box. I have a distinct memory of wearing pointy loafers just like the above right to get an MRI of my big toe. It’s hard to believe that I was not making the connection between my chronic big toe pain and the pinchy narrow shoes I was wearing!

The Be Lenka Viva is similar to my well-loved Dalia loafers but with a horsebit for an extra touch of glam. I think they are gorgeous, but I highly recommend putting a bit of moleskin or a cushion in the heel because the edge is a bit sharp and gave me blisters.

The Viva fit is on the lower volume and slimmer side (built on the same sole as their ballet flats), so if you have wide feet or want a lot of toe space you will do better in the Be Lenka Buena loafer shown below.

The Buena loafer (already available and ready to ship) is made on their Active sole and fits wide and extra wide feet better. They are a little more casual than the Viva, but still pretty and I know that many will appreciate the extra space in them. Both models come with a removable insole for more versatility in the volume, and don’t forget that low volume feet can use these fit hacks so they don’t flop around.

Lems Laguna

This is another style I had in my closet pre-barefoot shoe days and I am very happy to replace them now with the Lems Laguna. I love the neutral color palette and the combination of a sneaker sole with a leather upper – it makes for a sophisticated but casual vibe that matches most things. And who doesn’t love an easy slip-on?

The fit of the Laguna is on their wide last, not their widest. Which means that if you already know and love the Chelsea, Telluride, Primal 3, or Primal Zen you’ll notice that these Lagunas are a little slimmer. They still fit wide, but not extra wide. And also noticeable is that these are more cushioned than most barefoot shoes.

Sizing ran a little small for me, I have a women’s 7.5 but often wear a 7 in slip-ons (I wear a half size up in all my Lems!). However they fit well and are only a little too high volume for me. That means they’ll fit medium volume feet well.

You can remove the insole for more volume, but they aren’t meant to be worn without it so the inside isn’t finished. And if you’re low volume like me you can add a tongue pad to the upper or try a foot Snugg.

Lems already has a nice men’s slip-on called the Drifter, but I was really happy to see this new model in women’s sizes.

I remember several years ago when Peerko first released this model as the first toe cap barefoot shoe. But back then I didn’t have a barefoot shoe shop so couldn’t make them available to yooouuuuu! Peerko is now relaunching the Origin, and I’m very happy to be able to bring them to the US for easier shopping.

It is so exciting to have such an iconic style without the seriously pointy toe box. My feet hurt just looking at Converse nowadays!

The Peerko Origin is very soft, light and flexible. If you like a true barefoot feel you’ll be happy with these. I added the extra insole that came in the box because I have very low volume feet, and they fit me perfectly now.

Peerko is a good match for my foot type, because they have a wide toe box and a slim heel – essentially they are more fan-shaped than a brand like Bohempia for example (I do adore my Bohempia Velik slip-ons though).

Oh the retro sneaker! This classic color block style translates to a wide toe box quite easily – so easy in fact that I genuinely wonder why it’s so hard to find among mainstream shoe brands!

You all have been loving on Shapen barefoot shoes along with me for a while – their casual line is soft, light, and with an extra wide fit for superior comfort. Many people who have trouble getting enough width in other barefoot shoe brands have been enjoying Shapen, and the Re:wind is no different.

In fact, I would say they are even softer than their other Feelin sneakers. Both Samantha (wide, high volume foot model here at Anya’s Reviews) and I are loving them. Sizing is true, but on the roomier side overall.

What if I only want a wide toe box?

I love to add insoles to mine for days when I need more cushion, and I even have used an orthotic in my barefoot shoes back when I was recovering from a foot injury!

Wildling Shoes Fall Review

For being so minimal and light, Wildling’s winter shoes are always surprisingly functional for the cold season. They are one of my daily favorite barefoot shoe brands through the fall and winter.

I love natural fibers on my feet, and I also love how transparent Wildling is about their materials and manufacturing process. This summer I had the opportunity to visit Wildlings in their home base in Overath, Germany and I got to check out these fall beauties ahead of time! So I am excited to finally be able to share my thoughts with you.

Are They Winterproof?

I live in the midwest where weather is harsh for many months, so my standards here are high. Wildling’s fall & winter models all have a built in water resistant lining, which is very helpful. But I still recommend against letting them get totally soaked through, because they can be difficult to dry once thoroughly wet.

The outsoles are also not especially grippy or slip resistant, so when it’s extra slick out they might not be the best option for that either. For both of these reasons I don’t recommend them for long stretches in rain or snow, or rugged terrain.

However, Wildling’s fall and winter shoes are perfect for both mild and cold temps, some rain and snow, and every day walking around town and in nature.

Warm Insoles

When it comes to warmth, the wool Wildlings are quite warm. If you want to increase that warmth even more, I highly recommend checking out their wool insoles! They have two options:

• Felty, which is thick and very warm.
• Wooly, which is thinner and more versatile because it doesn’t take up much space.

I love both, my whole family uses them as sock replacements because they are breathable and moisture wicking. And in the winter the Felty insoles increase the warmth by a significant amount. I also use them often because I have low volume feet!

Sizing & Fit

I always recommend using Wildling’s size guide and fit kit available on each product listing for the most accurate advice. But Wildling tends to fit an average to wide width foot best and might be too too slim for an extra wide foot. They always have a couple models that work well for extra wide feet, and Samantha (our lovely extra wide-footed shoe tester) is usually able to get a good fit by sizing up in Wildlings. I have a wide foot myself, but not extra wide, and most Wildlings work well for me.

They also tend to fit high volume, so if you are someone with a lower arch height they might feel really spacious over the top of your foot. I use insoles in almost all of my Wildlings to solve that problem (really low volume feet here!).

Tejo

This model has a canvas upper, wool lining, and water resistant inner membrane, like all of the fall winter models. I love the metal lace holders to give the appearance of a modern chunky boot, while still being basically a baby bootie for big feet.

The Tejo fits really high volume so I add an additional felt insole AND thick socks so I don’t have to tighten the laces as much. Because this model is water resistant, the tongue is attached and folds up as you cinch the laces. The bunching isn’t super comfortable, so the insoles make everything smoother.

I chose the caramel color which is like a burnt orange. It’s warm and spicy for fall!

Atmo

The Atmo Paprika is bright cotton canvas hi-top with a cotton lining and a membrane to make them water resistant. This model is an excellent transition shoe for fall when the weather is chilly in the morning but warm later in the day because the cotton is breathable and easy to wear.

I am a sucker for a good punch of color and these deliver! Wildlings are not an ideal fit for my extra wide feet, but I still find them comfortable because of how unstructured and flexible they are. They are a glove-like fit for me.

The Atmo also comes in an all-black color in the Essentials section, available year round.

Ciclo

The Ciclo is a low-cut wool sneaker with virgin wool lining. The uppers are made with wool from Black Welsh Mountain sheep and around 25% plant-based-dyed recycled wool. They are stunning! Even though the weather hasn’t totally turned fall-like yet, Robby has been wearing these to his office job and is a big fan. He says they’re like wearing upscale slippers to work! They run very slightly shorter than usual, so size up if you’re between sizes.

North Wolf

The North Wolf is an Essential model from Wildling, so you can expect it to be available year after year. And I am so glad, because it is such a great fall/winter staple. It’s got a wool lining and a wool upper, so it’s one of the warmest options from Wildling. If I add in some warm socks and a felt insole my feet are toasty warm down to about 15-20* F/-9 C.

This model fits wider than most Wildlings, so it’s a good option for wide feet. But it is definitely high volume too!

Lotus Slipper

The Lotus is a felted wool house shoe. It was first released last fall and I wore them a ton through the winter and spring. They are warm, moisture wicking, light, and I really like having a rubber outsole indoors so I wasn’t slipping on my hard floors.

The felt is also moldable, similar to the way leather molds. But they are not well-suited for extra wide feet. Samantha gave these ones a go and they were too narrow for her.

You can also now find a low cut version of this barefoot slipper, the Nelus.

Chestnut

The Chestnut is a rustic ankle boot with a warm fall vibe that we love for little and big feet alike. The upper is a wool/hemp blend and the inner lining is wool, making these a good option for cold weather. Chestnut boots also have a wider fit like the North Wolf. We love them as an everyday go-to shoe.

Arni

Arni is another Essential model made of denim in a neutral grey. They have a slightly stiffer feel to them (denim), and are not as cozy warm as many of the other Wildling fall/winter models but for temperate weather they are a solid basic. I like the monochrome look, and similar to a good pair of jeans the material gets softer as it gets worn in. With the water resistant membrane they work for transitional weather in both fall and spring!

The following models we’re covering are Essential Wildling shoes that you can find year round and aren’t necessarily good for the cold wet months of the year, but we still wear them year round because of how comfortable they are.

Tanuki

Tanuki is one of my favorite Wildling models. While hardly a winter shoe, it is nice that you can get them year round from Wildling. The material is extremely lightweight and breathable, so I actually wear them most often in the summer. They’re the shoe for people who hate shoes!

Nittugo

Like the Tanuki, the Nittugo has a barely-there feel. This model has a knitted wool upper that is stretchy and soft, so works better for wider feet than the Tanuki because it conforms to your foot shape. I wear mine a ton for traveling with an extra insole (without it the sole is so thin that I can be uncomfortable when doing lots of pavement walking). These might be my all time fave Wildlings!

Kami

The Kami is a slip-on shoe made of the same material as Tanuki (washi paper). They are feather light and easy to wear. They fit wider than most Wildlings, so if in-between I recommend sizing down. I wear one size down in my Wildling slip-ons. This helps them fit more securely on my feet as well, because the opening can be loose if you have thin heels and low arches.

I’m always excited to see what’s new with Wildlings! They make it possible to be cozy warm and dry but still feel like I’m barefoot.
