Clogs and barefoot shoes don’t usually go together, since traditional clogs tend to be stiff, heavy, and structured. So when Barebound launched last year with a clog as their flagship model, I was immediately curious. After wearing them, I can say they’ve done something genuinely different: a clog that looks substantial but feels soft, flexible, and surprisingly foot-friendly.

Meet Barebound

Barebound is a young barefoot footwear brand that started with children’s shoes before expanding into adult styles. They launched just last year with a focused lineup beginning with clogs and recently adding a boat shoe. Their adult models are unisex and available in EU sizes 35-46.

With only a couple models so far, Barebound is still in its early stages, but the thoughtful execution so far suggests that they will be a company to contend with in the barefoot space as they grow.

What I Love About Them

Their design philosophy centers on combining natural movement with elevated, versatile aesthetics. Barebound leans into shoes that look substantial while still maintaining flexibility and comfort.

One standout aspect is their material innovation. Alongside traditional suede options, they offer a leather alternative made from corn waste paired with natural rubber outsoles. The result is a breathable, natural-feeling material that is eco-friendly and avoids the plasticky feel common in many vegan leathers while requiring minimal upkeep compared to real leather.

The shoes are on the pricier end, and because they’re currently overseas-based, shipping can be expensive for US customers (which is one of the reasons I’m hoping to carry them in the shop this year).

Barebound Clogs Review

Barefoot clogs are notoriously difficult to get right, because clogs are traditionally stiff, heavy, and structured, more like wooden blocks than natural footwear. Somehow, Barebound manages to land in a sweet spot between structure and flexibility with the Ikaros model. They look very much like a traditional clog but they don’t at all wear like one.

Visually, the sole looks fairly substantial (somewhat similar to brands like Lang.S) but on the foot it feels soft and flexible. The sole has a medium thickness, thinner than conventional clogs, but thicker than ultra-minimal barefoot shoes. This gives you a bit of cushioning which I appreciate sometimes, but may not be for diehard barefoot enthusiasts.

One detail I especially appreciate is the vertical toe height. Sometimes barefoot shoes squash the toes from above, but these provide enough space that your toes aren’t compressed – something that makes a big difference for all-day comfort.

These are surprisingly versatile. They can be styled casually with socks and lounge wear, as an everyday shoe with jeans, or dressed up slightly with a more polished outfit.

They come in multiple neutral color options and have a clean aesthetic that feels modern and classic at the same time.

Sizing & Fit

Barebound clogs fit true-to-size overall with:

• Medium width – Wider than slim barefoot brands like Vivobarefoot, but not extra wide.
• Medium volume – The top strap has adjustability but leans toward higher volume. Even on the tightest setting, it may feel roomy for low-volume feet, and tightening all the way can cause bunching in the material – not a good look!
• The heel is really nicely fitted compared to many clog designs, which often feel wide and floppy in the back.

Because I have low-volume feet with narrow heels, I found sizing down worked better for me. The extra space I normally appreciate in boots and sneakers felt too loose in a clog format.

Wearing them with socks or adding an insole also helps dial in the fit. The raised lip around the heel area provides enough depth to accommodate an added insole, and it also offers some extra protection from the elements. Find my favorite insoles here.

The back strap is adjustable and helps secure the shoe, but overtightening can push the foot forward. 

Barebound Boat Shoes (First Look)

Barebound recently introduced a boat shoe called the Orpheus made from the same corn-waste leather alternative and natural rubber sole.

I haven’t personally tested this model yet, so I can’t really speak to its comfort or fit. But, it appears to follow the same design philosophy combining classic silhouettes with barefoot-friendly construction, and it’s overall a really nice-looking shoe. 

Barebound Brave (Kids)

These itty bitty clogs are the first shoe Barebound released. I have not yet tried these either. They are very cute, but for small children I am quite particular about flexibility and a secure fit on the foot. So I want to be sure they meet my criteria before recommending. They come in sizes EU 20-27. If you’ve tried them, please let me know what you think!

In summary, Barebound is a thoughtful newcomer in the barefoot space. They feel special enough to highlight and fill a niche many barefoot wearers have been waiting for. Given how new they are, it’s likely we’ll see additional models in the future. I’ll be keeping my eye on this company as it grows!

PaperKrane began in 2012 as a passion project when founder Kate Corleison began making eye-catching baby booties inspired by her love of the Japanese art of origami. Her bold and quirky patterns quickly gained popularity, and over time they expanded into adult models.

PaperKrane’s mission is to create ethically made, fashion-forward barefoot footwear for all ages featuring a sole with their signature “Four Fs.” Flexible, flat, featherlight, and foot-shaped.

I think one of the things I love best about the PaperKrane is that they are always playing with the unexpected: brightly colored prints and boldly patterned outsoles, featuring leopard and zebra prints, army print, and my personal favorite—the rainbow outsole.

Besides their prints, something else that is unique about the shoes is that they are thoughtfully designed to be accessible and disability friendly as outlined here —a personal mission for founder Kate Corleison, whose own daughter has needed adaptive footwear. Velcro openings and a high instep that opens up wide make a number of PK models mobility-friendly. This is not easy to find in the shoe world in general, let alone in the barefoot shoe world!

Because many Australian schools require uniforms, PaperKrane has also created a line of school-friendly barefoot shoes that check all the boxes—compliant with regulations but still foot-shaped, featherlight, flat (zero drop), and flexible. Unlike the heavy, clunky, and heeled school shoes that have dominated uniforms for decades, these kicks let growing feet move naturally while keeping kids comfortable all day. We have had just one single issue come up over the years – one time the threads on the outsole of a pair of sneakers started to fray quite quickly. This seemed like an isolated incident, considering how many other pairs we’ve tested without any issue.

One thing to note: they have a more rectangular fit, meaning the midfoot runs a bit loose. While some may love the extra room, those who prefer a snugger midfoot fit might find them a tad too boxy. Overall, they offer a solid, universal fit that works well for most feet!

Something you’ll want to keep in mind if ordering PaperKrane shoes is their return policy. To request a return, you must contact them within 14 days of delivery. Shipping back to Australia is at your own expense and they don’t offer full refunds unless a mistake was made on their end; you only get an exchange or store credit for change of mind, wrong sizing, or anything bought on sale. Meet Tolos

Tolos is run by Evan, a true one-man show. Evan designs the shoes, fulfills the orders, and even answers your customer service questions — all while being one of the kindest people I have ever met in the barefoot shoe space. He’s supported my events from the very beginning (we first met in 2023), and it’s been such a joy to watch him expand his line. You can really feel the care and thoughtfulness he puts into each shoe.

Tolos first launched with just one barefoot sneaker (the Archetype) that was thin, flexible, and very performance-oriented. Now they’ve expanded into a full line that includes both barefoot and “transition” options, giving you the choice between a super thin sole or a thicker, more protective one. As someone who loves having variety in my shoe wardrobe, I am a big fan of what Tolos is doing.

Transition VS Barefoot

What sets Tolos apart is that you can choose how much ground feel and flexibility you want. All models except the Archetype come in either a barefoot version (thin and flexible) or a transition version (thicker sole). Both use the exact same grippy, high-abrasion outsole, so you’re not trading off durability no matter which you choose.

The transition midsole is firm rather than squishy, which some people prefer for long-term use because it holds up better over time. Even though it’s called a “transition” shoe, I find it really practical as an option for barefoot enthusiasts who just want a little extra underfoot protection for those longer days walking on concrete. And if you are a hard-core barefooter who likes to keep things ultra-thin, the barefoot version definitely gives you that classic, flexible feel.

For both models of shoe, the insoles are sewn in and not removable, which is worth noting. If you need/want more soft cushion, you always have the option to add in your own insole.

Sizing & Fit

Here are some pointers for the sizing and fit on the new Tolos models.

• The shoes have a wide to extra-wide toe box
• They have a bean-shaped toe box, so if you have a more square-shaped foot you might find them less ideal.
• Sizing runs just a little small, so if you’re in between, definitely size up. Existing customers will likely need a half-size larger than their Archetype. 
• The outsole shape narrows by the arch, which is great if you have a high arch or a narrow midfoot. If you have a wide midfoot or a very low arch, this area might bother you.
• The volume is medium, but because of the laces you can open them up for higher volume feet or tighten them down if you’re lower volume. 

Samantha’s extra-wide feet fit in them perfectly, but that’s because she has a sloped foot. I have an overall narrower foot than her, but find that the new Tolos shoes don’t have enough space for my outer toes because mine have a squarer shape. This is the first time something wide enough for Samantha wasn’t wide enough for me (in the right places)!

The Canvas High Top is a good addition to the barefoot/natural footwear world as a true classic high top sneaker. It features a reinforced rubber toe guard which is great for durability, and I love that it’s all cotton canvas, inside and out. That makes for a breathable, machine washable shoe that is also a bit nostalgic/retro. They come in barefoot or transition thickness, and in off-white or pure white.

Samantha is testing a pair along with me in the Transition thickness and she is a huge fan. She’s been wearing them a ton the last few months! They’re classic and cool. I prefer the Barefoot version because it’s lighter and I don’t notice the outer edge of the shoe as much in it. But neither fits my feet shape really well, sadly.

I had one other minor fit issue – the first time I wore them my socks didn’t go above the tops of the shoes and I found that the edge rubbed my skin. Samantha didn’t experience this, but she has high volume feet and I have very low volume feet. I have mine totally cinched up and it seems that makes it cut in more. So the next time I wore taller socks!

Soleil

The Soleil is Tolos’ sportier new option. It’s made of ripstop mesh with faux suede details, so it’s not quite as natural as the canvas, but it’s super abrasion-resistant and has more padding and structure through the heel and ankle. 

The fit is the same as the Canvas High Tops, but I do have a small beef with the shoe tongue. The edge of it is raw which makes it look unfinished. Overall, the style doesn’t do it as well for me as the High Tops. But Robby, our male tester, loves them and has been wearing them a ton.

Performance wise, the Soleil can perform like an athletic shoe but looks more like a mainstream sneaker. It comes in one color — a creamy base with taupe accents.

Archetype 2.0

The Archetype is Tolos’ original model that is lighter, and more flexible and minimal. They are designed to be flush with your foot and dynamic for the gym, but can also work as an everyday shoe. These ones fit me better because the sole sits lower on the sides of the shoe, but even in this one I feel my pinkie toe on the side. However, they’re a great all-arounder barefoot shoe!

This model fits more true to size than the other two.

I love that Evan offers both barefoot and transition soles in the new styles — it’s so rare to get that choice without compromising fit or quality. The shoes are wide, durable, and practical, while still looking like “normal” sneakers. If you’ve been wanting a shoe that can handle long days on hard ground but still respects a natural foot shape, or you are just craving that classic high-top look, Tolos is absolutely worth checking out.

No one does outdoor shoes like Vivobarefoot. They walk a delicate balance between durable, practical and yet still flexible and thin enough to let you feel the earth. You can find boots and shoes for different terrains, climates, and seasons and all function excellently. Between all the members of my family, we’ve tried just about all of them.

My favorite is the Vivobarefoot Tracker Leather – they’re an excellent durable barefoot hiking boot with natural water resistance, lugs for traction, and a removable thermal insole. They’re IMO the best combination of barefoot feel with function. And for warm weather, the Primus Trail is the favorite in our house. They all shed mud well and are up to the task.

While the Vibarefoot hiking boots are extremely functional and durable, they feel a little stiff at first for a barefoot hiking shoe and take breaking in. We have multiple pairs in our house that are several years old and I can confidently attest to them becoming soft and flexible over time.

Here you can see the different outdoor soles in order of their tread depth. I find the FG and SG work well on all terrains and I can wear them all day easily, while the Esc sole is extra rugged and durable (a little beefier than I need most of the time). Xero Hiking Shoes

Xero has a few barefoot hiking boot and shoe options, but my favorite is the Scrambler line. They have a softer fit and feel than the Ridgeway line and are easy to wear. Especially the Scrambler Low EV, which is the most flexible option with a forgiving mesh upper. The waterproof options fit a little snugger (because of the membrane), so I tend to prefer the others.

Xero’s barefoot hikers are a little more cushioned than Vivobarefoot and need less breaking in, but aren’t quite as technical. However, they’ve been long lasting for me, are at a lower price point, and I appreciate the medium thick sole for just a bit more between me and the ground.

• Works for most foot volumes from low to high. I was able to cinch them well on my low volume feet.

Compared to Vivobarefoot, Xero has a straighter cut with more width and volume in the midfoot and heel area.

Freet Barefoot has several barefoot hiking boots and shoes that function excellently, including waterproof and knit options. The hallmark feature of Freet hikers is that they have a wide foot shape with plenty of space for all toes, while still being practical for outdoor use. The Chamois (above right) is new for 2025 and I am really enjoying them! The hardwearing leather upper is a little bit stiff (every waterproof boot I test is), but the fit is good and they feel quality.

Our lightweight favorites are the Howgill and Keld 2 (above left) -they are so soft and comfy with zero break in time and all the toe space. The Keld 2 is the most breathable, airy trail shoe in this list!

Groundies Portland

The Groundies Portland surprised me this spring. They have a roomy toe box, but are still fitted through the midfoot and heel. They are structured but soft, and the outsole has decent grip. There is not as much tread on the Portland as the above options I’ve reviewed, but they are a good balance between barefoot feel and function.

They are similar to the Freet Chamois, but not quite as wide in the toe box and the outsole is a little more flexible, thin and grippy (the Freet Chamois has a deeper tread).

Sizing & Fit

• Runs slightly small because of the insulation and waterproofing. I have a size 38.
• Wide to slightly extra wide
• Medium volume

Lono Wild

Suede & Vegan Option | Sizes EU 36-46

The Lono Wild is a lightweight, soft suede hiking shoe that required no breaking in and was immediately soft on my feet – a rarity among leather hiking shoes. They have just a bit of cushion under foot, but there is still a lot of ground feel. Overall, I find them delightful to wear!

My one gripe is that the laces don’t tighten super easily over my low volume feet. It’s one of those oft overlooked but still important features. However wearing them with a pair of wool socks helped fill in any extra volume and I expect that the suede will mold to my foot making the shoe easier to work with. Worth it to not have any pinch points but still have good traction and stability.

Be Lenka barefoot has two good hiking shoes. The first is the Trailwalker – a lowcut option with a flexible, light outsole. These were recently updated to a 3.0 version, and this version is not quite as wide as the original so I no longer recommend for extra wide feet. The 3.0 is also more padded and feels a little more protective (I tend to bang my feet into rocks when I hike). The suede upper is durable, but soft and the toe guard protects against inevitable scuffs.

The second is the Nevada (currently only in the EU) – they have an extra wide toe box, one of the widest available, and are made of a soft but sturdy leather. They are great for people who want the width, but I do find the sole a little bit heavier than I prefer.

• Trailwalker is true to size. The Nevada runs slightly small. I can wear my usual size and one size up.
• Fits wide to extra wide feet.
• Medium Volume, easily adjusted.

Merrell Vapor Trail Glove

Merrell is a US brand that primarily sells non-barefoot shoes, but also has a few good wide toe box barefoot models. The best known, and the one that my son backpacked Yosemite in, is the Trail Glove. It has a quality outsole with toe protection, a bit of water resistance for shallow puddles, and a breathable mesh upper.

The outsole is a little bit thicker and stiffer than many of the other barefoot hiking shoes reviewed here, but that can be useful if you want a bit more protection. They also have an even heavier duty model called the Wrapt for extreme terrains. Merrell has been a solid high quality brand for me for many years, even before I started wearing barefoot shoes.

Sizing & Fit

• True to size, but I sized up for more toe room
• Slim to Medium wide – not suited for extra wide feet
• Medium volume with removable insole

I sized up for a little extra width because I have wider than average feet. They are comfy for me, but I do feel my toes on the sides of the shoe.

Softstar Switchback II – Extra Wide Friendly

Leather & Wool Lining | Sizes US 5U-13U

The Softstar Switchback II has a soft, supple leather upper and thin wool lining for a comfortable fit with no break in time. It comes in two widths to fit average to extra wide feet. The outsole is thick but flexible Vibram Megagrip – it has serious traction and durability that should last for many, many miles. And if it does wear out, you can have it resoled by a professional cobbler (this is the only barefoot hiker listed here that can be repaired easily)!

I love that they conformed to my arches and ankles easily with no rubbing, and leave space above my toes (no more pressure from above like in the previous version). My only complaint is that they come in whole sizes only, and I would fit best in a half size. Mine are a 7U or Women’s 8 and they are a little too big and long, which makes the sole feel a little heavier and clunkier. I am thinking about going to the size below, because the leather should mold to my feet even if they are a little bit short!

Best Wide Toe Box Cushioned Hiking Boots

Here are some excellent wide toe box hiking shoes that have more cushion and a little more stability than in your typical barefoot shoe. I make regular use of this type of shoe for long hikes or difficult terrain. They are also favorites for people doing ultra hikes or multi-day backpacking treks. And they can be great for people who want a wide toe box but are not comfortable in the other features of barefoot shoes.

Altra Lone Peak – Extra Wide Friendly

Waterproof Options | Vegan | Sizes US Women’s 5.5 – US Men’s 16

The Lone Peak from Altra is a well loved zero drop trail and hiking shoe line that features a generously wide toe box and flat but cushioned outsole. They are one of, if not the, best in terms of technical specs and have been used by many on major thru hikes and ultra trail running distances. A friend of mine borrowed my All Weather Mid (shown above right) to hike Kilimanjaro last year, and Justin wore the waterproof Lone Peak to backpack Yosemite!

I find the shape and width of them to be an almost universally good fit and the thick sole can be a life saver for long distances or if you just need more sole underfoot. They are secure through the midfoot and heel, but leave plenty of room in the toe box – just the way I like it! And the standard Lone Peak even has an extra wide option that has more upper material, to allow for a thicker foot.

Lems carries a variety of trail shoes with a wide to aaaalmost extra wide toe box and thick, durable outsoles. My personal favorite is the waterproof Lems Boulder Boot Grip. They have a generous fit and strike a good balance between structured traction and flexibility. I wear mine all the time when it’s cold, wet, and muddy. Justin also is a huge fan of Lems hikers both on and off the trails.

If you want something even more rugged, there is the Outlander boot, and coming soon – the Trail Thrasher (low top). There is a removable insole if you need more space, and you can swap it out for a sheepskin one to stay extra cozy. Please note that the insoles that come with these boots has a 3mm compressible heel rise.

Sizing & Fit

• Runs small – They have a reliable sizing guide, so follow that. I usually size up a whole size in Lems boots.
• Fits wide feet – I recommend choose the Widest Natural Shape models, unless you have slim feet.
• High volume – I wear leg warmers with mine usually to fill in the extra space.

One thing I love about Lems shoes is that they have a lot of space above the toes, which makes them feel very roomy without being too big on the rest of the foot.

The Rediscover from Bahe is a moderately cushioned, more traditional-feeling wide toe box hiker. It has an 18mm total stack height and is fully waterproof, but it is fairly stiff and takes some time to break in. Particularly around the ankle is not as soft as I would prefer, but if you are someone who wants that structure and stability the Bahe Revive is a good wide toe box alternative. Oh, and they have grounding capabilities!

Everyone will experience width differently, but I did my best to generalize it here. Keep in mind that this is organized by width in the toe box, and not width in other parts of the shoe (like midfoot and heel).

Fit & Waterproofing Hacks

When it comes to barefoot hiking boots I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Here are a few of my best pointers that will improve the fit and longevity of your shoes.

• Err on the larger size – feet swell when you hike so it’s a good idea to buy a half or whole size bigger than you typically wear. This also allows for socks and insoles.
• Grab an extra pair of insoles – with thin barefoot shoes these can really come in handy if you’re on extra hard terrain or your feet just need a break.
• Learn how to waterproof your shoes – waterproof shoes all have an expiration date and will start leaking eventually. If you get yourself some waterproofing products you can really increase the usefulness of your boots.

In my experience, barefoot hiking boots for kids is often not necessary unless they are serious little mountain goats. With their center of gravity so close to the ground, additional tread often doesn’t add more stability. So we focus more on durability and water resistance when choosing practical hiking shoes for my kids. Many of us gravitate towards flats for comfort (better than heels, amiright?). But in my opinion the standard ballet flat is not cutting it. Most options you find in store and online have a painfully pinchy toe box and a small heel. We can do better! That is why I wear barefoot ballet flats. They are:

• Shaped like a foot – No toe squish!
• Zero drop – No heel whatsoever.
• Secure to the foot – No flopping.

The All Around Best Barefoot Ballet Flats

For me Groundies barefoot ballet flats best encapsulate the “stays on, but doesn’t squish your toes” fit that I strive for with flats. The opening is elasticized for a secure fit, and they are are super light and stylish. They give that touch of breezy, European street style to my outfits, and are the flats I reach for most often.

The Lily also comes in two widths. I wear the regular width, but the Barefoot+ (wide) version is extra wide friendly.

I’ve found with the elasticized opening that they fit slightly smaller than expected, and some people with higher volume feet have reported they cut into the backs of their heels. So you may want to size up a half size, and have some moleskin on hand for the break in process.

Sizing & Fit:

• Fits slightly small – I am in between a 6 & 7 in flats and I went with the 7 (EU 37).
• Average to slightly wide in Barefoot width, extra wide in Barefoot + (the Lily model).
• Fits medium to lower volume feet best – might cut into your heels if you have thicker, high volume feet.
• Removable insole gives you more versatility.

Shapen my favorite elegant barefoot ballet flats, and of all the options on this list are IMO the best for fancy occasions. They have those extra special details to make a statement and take the look up a notch.

The Orchid (above right) is my favorite, followed by the Poppy. They really make dressing up so much more enjoyable!

Sizing & Fit:

• The Orchid and Poppy run long! Tulip is true to size.
• All Shapen barefoot flats come in a regular and wide. Regular fits average and slim feet best. Wide fits wide and extra wide feet best.
• Works for most foot volumes, because so much of the shoe is open. But those with really thick, high volume feet might find that the straps are barely long enough.

I’d say the trickiest thing about Shapen is that it’s tricky to find your size. I recommend everyone size down one, and to go with wide if you know you have wide feet or like lots of toe room.

Be Lenka ballet flats are well made and durable, with a removable insole. They are slightly thicker and more structured than Groundies flats, with a medium wide fit. I especially love the Bellissima flat that has a cut out detail for just a little bit of interest. They make great teacher flats!

Because these have a bit more structure to them, I found that they felt a little tight when brand new and needed some breaking in. They also don’t fit as securely on my narrow heels as Groundies. But after a few wears they are comfortable and don’t slip.

• Slightly small – I wear a size 37 in these as well, and could not go down.
• Average width – not extra wide friendly.

Jenon Leather Villet

The Jenon Leather Villet is a surprise favorite of mine. Each pair is handmade in a small workshop in the Czech republic. They come with a lightly cushioned insole, and have a lovely toe box shape that is both wide and tall, so your toes don’t get smashed from any angle. They are wide enough to fit extra wide friends (Samantha approved!), but also secure and comfortable on my medium width, low volume feet.

They have a more structured look to them that I really like (not baggy), but they don’t rub anywhere and I’ve found them so comfortable and cute. The two strap version is a custom model especially made for Anya’s Shop, but you can order the one strap Villet in more colors (they do custom pairs!) directly from Jenon Leather.

All Origo mary janes are very classic, and have a secure fit which is much appreciated if you often slip out of your shoes. Everything but the Woven Ballerina is leather lined and feels a little bit structured, like the leather needs a bit of breaking in. For me it’s a good balance between holding the shape and being flexible.

The Xero Phoenix is one of the more affordable cute barefoot ballet flats, and I find them perfect as a simple dress shoe. They are knitted, which makes them look a bit more casual, but the cut is nice and they feel good to wear.

The knit material can stretch a bit, and they’re a little loose on narrow heels. So I sized down to a 6, and that is the best fit for me. They’re frequently out of stock because they are so popular! If you can snag a pair when they’re restocked, they are worth it.

Softstar Shoes

Softstar makes a classic Ballerine flat, and a Merry Jane. Both can be customized in a bunch of colors, which is super fun, and they offer multiple widths. The insole is a bit more cushioned than the other options here, making them good for people who are on their feet all day.

The heel in the classic Ballerina does slip a little more on me once broken in, so I prefer the ankle strap version (shown on me below). Or you can get the Ballerine with a sport closure for more security.

The mary jane style (Primal Merry Jane) has an extra wide, square shape, so if you need an uncompromising toe box that is where to look. But keep in mind that the fit is shallow over the toes, so I recommend stuffing it with paper towels overnight to give it some vertical space.

While they are not super dressy, the price point of $40 can’t be beat. They have a good wide fit, and a good amount of cushion, so a lot of newcomers to the barefoot space like them as an easy entry point.

I find them true to size, but they don’t stay on my heel super well because the knit is a bit stretchy.

Meet Ohne

Ohne Project was born when founders Manel and Hanna were looking for the best shoes for their newly walking toddler’s developing feet. Convinced by the benefits of barefoot footwear for toddlers and children, they wondered—why should adults settle for anything less? But the barefoot shoe market lacked the stylish sneakers they loved. When Hanna quipped, “I’ll wear barefoot shoes only if you design me some,” Manel took the challenge seriously, launching Ohne Project.

I got my first pair about a year ago, but the brand initially struggled with inventory (as new startups frequently do). That has stabilized a bit, with more available inventory than before. But sizes do tend to sell out quickly, so be sure to sign up for restock notifications if you see something you like! The green pair in this review will be restocked at the end of April.

All of Ohne’s shoes are entirely vegan and earth-friendly. Each barefoot sneaker is handcrafted in Spain, employing the finest 100% plant-based materials made from corn waste, bamboo and organic cotton. Normally, vegan leathers feel plasticky to me, and I steer away from them, opting for real leather, cotton, or hemp. But I have been pretty impressed by Ohne’s vegan leather, which feels way more natural to me than most.

The shoes are lined with a recycled polyester or microfiber. The microfiber-lined model I have felt a little hot for me last summer, but I adored them in the spring and fall. I wear them with these low cut toe socks.

I am enjoying their good barefoot feel and have what I would consider a medium level of cushioning – perfect for days when a little extra comfort is needed.

The shoes are on the higher end of the price range, coming in at $170 USD, but if you use our discount code it comes down to $153.

What I Love About Them

Ohne nails the retro sneaker look better than almost anyone and have a high-end, fashion-forward look and feel. With three lines inspired by the styles of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, their designs are a good mix of nostalgia and style. Fun, bold, and effortlessly cool, these sneakers have filled a gap in my collection! And I am loving their more colorful styles too.

I feel like Ohne does a good job of delivering a lot of toe space without looking like it, and the fit is secure around the midfoot and heel so you don’t feel like you’re sliding around. For me, this is much appreciated because I feel like a lot of barefoot shoes are too roomy in the hindfoot.

They also deliver a classic sneaker look *mostly* without sacrificing a natural feel. Their custom-molded sole mimics the look of a traditional sneaker but stays quite thin at under 5 mm (without insole), however it doesn’t bend and freely as well as some other barefoot shoes. It’s still pretty flexy, and gets more so as you wear them.

Finally, a fully finished interior means you can wear them with or without the provided insoles and still enjoy a smooth, comfortable feel.

Sizing & Fit 

Ohne Project shoes are:

• True to size – I have a size 37
• Generous width to the toe-box — roomier than Vivobarefoot but not extra wide — making them a good fit for most foot types.
• Comes with two insoles in different thicknesses
• Low to high volume — I have low-volume feet and find the fit ideal with the thinner insole provided, but if you have a higher volume foot you can remove it. And if you have a very low volume foot you can put in the thicker insole.

As of the time of writing this review – shipping comes in at €29 EUR or $34ish USD, and outside of the EU, returns are not accepted – so you will definitely want to order carefully. If you find the shoes don’t work for you, your best option would be to try to resell them online. Something you might want to keep in mind!

Lono is a new brand in the barefoot shoe space, with just two models. Lono’s mission is to offer shoes both good for the health of the planet as well as the health of our bodies. They focus on sustainability with biodegradable natural materials, and reasonable pricing.

Lono Flow Review

I have really been enjoying the Lono Flow, and consider them to pack a serious punch for their price point. I’ve tested and reviewed so many barefoot sneakers, and these stand out for their quality and feel without costing $150+ (Flow is $98 before my code ANYASREVIEWS for 10% off). If you are looking for that flexible, soft, light-as-air-but-still-functional feel, Lono Flow is the one.

They have a flexible 6 mm outsole with removable insole and super breathable knit upper with reinforced edges. They are vegan friendly too. I have been slipping mine on and off without doing the laces (upper is stretchy, laces are not, so it means I can’t tie them super tight), and have not seen any deforming or stretching out of the materials so far.

Lono offers your basic neutral color options as well as some bright pops of color. Style-wise, they definitely look sporty but I am a fan of the fun colors.

The laces go fully side-to-side across the top of the shoe, which offers good adjustability and a secure fit. If you plan to use these in the gym or for sport, this is an important feature. The lateral stability of the laces will keep your foot secure and not sliding around.

What I Love About Them

Lono Flows have a pretty generous toe box, with more space than comparable sport shoes from Vivobarefoot. But they still have that secure fit through the heel and midfoot, which is so needed in sport shoes. It’s a fit that is hard to nail, but tends to fit a wide range of people well. It’s really the best of both worlds!

Something else I really love about these shoes is that although I have worn the shoes often, and in some inclement weather, they have held their shape well and the collar still looks good.

Sizing & Fit

Lono Flow shoes are:

• True to size
• Fan-shaped with a wide to extra wide toe box.
• Medium volume (high volume friends might not fit well)
• Removable insole gives you a bit more adjustability

It is true that the Flow S (for sport) has a tighter fit so you have more security in the shoe – and this made the toe box feel a little narrower than on the original Flow. So if you want all that room, go for original Flow.

And keep in mind that the soles are pretty thin on Lono shoes, so not the best if you need some extra cushion.

Here is a comparison of Flow (left) to Flow S (right). You can see that Flow S is cinched in more, and it has some extra grippy tread on the outsole.

How I Wear Lono

These definitely look like a sport shoe, but they function really well as an everyday shoe. The outsoles are pretty grippy and versatile for use in the gym and on the road. They work well for running, HIIT, CrossFit, and strength training (I would choose Flow S for HIIT and CrossFit). I’ve even wore mine hiking and then machine-washed them after.

Wildling Spring

Wildling is bringing the color this spring! The Borba has an orange/pink butterfly print that is so cheery and fun, I couldn’t resist. And it’s ultra light and soft. I have a size 37 and they are roomy and wide fitting, but not extra wide.

And we are also loving the Lago model. In small kid’s sizes it has a fun blue outsole and velcro straps.

But the biggest news from Wildling this spring is their rain boot. Ranidae (rainy day, get it?) is I think the highest quality rain boot we’ve seen in barefoot shoes to date. The toe box is also quite generous without being excessively floppy. They do run on the big side over all – I tried both a 38 and a 37, because I wear a size 38 in a number of Wildling shoes. But in these the 37 is plenty big, and I can even fit in the new thick wool socks also launching tomorrow.

For those of you wondering if they’re extra wide friendly – Samantha tried them on and they fit her too! So great news all around. You can check out the other wide toe box rain boots on the market here.

Rain boot pro tip: Because rubber boots have to be wide enough to get your foot inside, heel slippage is common. I rectify this with stirrup socks!

Vega Espadrilles

Vega Barefoot has been around for a few seasons, and they tend to have really fun and pretty styles. They operate on a preorder basis, which isn’t my favorite (I wish I could try them on before I shared about them!), but I have been wanting an espadrille shoe just like the ones they are offering! I ordered a size 37 and will share more info when I get them, in case there are still any in stock.

Based on my experience with past models, the fit on their Barefoot width is pretty standard and will be best for average width fit. If you are looking for extra wide, they do have some nice models that come in a Barefoot Plus width (not the espadrilles though)!

The quality on these is also medium – they are a cheaper option compared to other high end barefoot dress shoes. It’s a pretty good deal for EU folks! But the shipping cost of 45 Euros to the US kind of canceled out the cheaper base price for me. Again, the style is unique and so pretty, so I still had to have them!

Shapen Playa

Available now is another espadrille style from Shapen – the Playa. This will come in beige and navy, in two widths! Shown above is Regular width, so Wide will be best for those with extra wide feet.

Splay Shoes has reimagined the classic American sneaker with a barefoot feel for more comfort.

Known for its accessibility and affordability, Splay Shoes recently redesigned its entire lineup and launched FIVE new models this year. The quality is overall better, but there are some things to know about the fit and feel.

Less Barefoot?

While Splay shoes are a fantastic entry point for those new to the barefoot movement, the changes might not appeal to the more dedicated barefoot enthusiasts. Most models now have a less flexible sole with a transitional feel, and a removable insole for optional cushion.

This makes them ideal for those who want to ease into barefoot footwear, or who are craving more classic styling. They still are flexible and wide, just not as much as they used to be (except for the kids Explore! Those are unchanged).

Splay will soon be launching an updated Freestyle with a wider and softer fit. If you’re someone who wants a true barefoot feel, stay tuned for that!

Improved Quality

The newly redesigned models are a marked improvement over older versions in terms of design and quality, but they aren’t intended to rival high-end sneakers. Splay shoes are best suited for casual wearers who don’t mind a sneaker looking slightly worn over time. Don’t expect them to hold up as well as $200 shoes, but for $60  – $100 a pair, they offer good value for their price.

Another great improvement to Splay shoes is that they all have a removable insole now! Something I’ve been pushing for from barefoot shoe brands for years. That also gives you the option of two different cushioning levels in the shoe.

Overall Sizing & Fit

While there are some differences between models, overall sizing is as follows:

• Runs slightly small, and doesn’t come in half sizes. I typically wear a women’s 6.5 and a 7 works well for me.
• Average to wide fit – adult models have lots of toe space compared to traditional sneakers, but may not suitable for extra wide toe splay. Kids models have a slim heel but wide toe box.
• Medium to high volume – this is where you get the most variation on fit between models, so read on for the lowdown!

Now let’s get into the individual models!

The Rev

The Rev is probably my favorite new shoe from Splay. They come in both low and high-top versions with a cool, modern look that is reminiscent of Vans shoes.

The design strikes a balance between functionality (as grippy skate shoes) and aesthetics, with a medium stack height that isn’t as thick as the new Runner 1 but still not super thin. I appreciate that they have a lot of vertical toe space, which makes the toe box feel roomier and more comfortable.

My one complaint is that the high tops take forever to put on and off. Neither of us wear high top sneakers very often for this reason, but it seems to take a particularly long time to do the laces on Rev hightop. Once on they’re really comfortable! But the low top Rev is the one I wear most often because I’m impatient.

Overall Justin and I both are fans and find the fit comfy and wearable.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: While the shoe is on the wider side, it’s not suited for extra-wide feet. The rubber sole wraps up around the edge, which makes for a cool look that both Justin and I appreciate, but it limits the stretchability of the canvas upper and makes it less adaptable for extra wide foot shapes.
• Medium to high volume: The Rev fits true to size and works best for medium to high-volume feet. The laces allow for customization, making it possible to tighten the shoe for low-volume feet (like mine). I noticed this caused a bit of bunching though.
• Vertical toe space! The Rev offers good vertical space above the toes, which is a common issue with many shoes. While it doesn’t quite match the spaciousness of the Runner 1, it still provides more than enough room to feel comfortable.

Streetstyle Slip-on

The Streetstyle Slip-On is the Splay shoe I have had the longest time to test. As a slip-on, it’s easy to throw on and go, and the canvas material softens quite a bit over time. However, they have a really high-volume fit that was tricky for me and lots of others. I had to add two tongue pads to the top of the shoe to keep my foot from sliding out!

Justin also had trouble with them being super wide in the heel, but if he wears them with socks they aren’t too slidey. He is less interested in using fit hacks to modify shoes, so socks it is. Despite the issue of them being too loose, we like the design and I find that I wear them on often.

In summary – high volume friends will be happy! And if you’re not high volume, expect to need to make use of tongue pads to get a good fit. Overall I still like the Streetstyle Slip-On because they look cool, are comfy, and easy to put on and off.

Sizing & Fit

These fit similarly to the Rev, just without laces for adjustability.

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Wide fit: A wide fit that feels generous because there is a lot of volume
• High volume: No adjustments means that medium and low volume feet may have too much room and need to use a fit hack.
• Vertical toe space: Space above the toes in the Streetstyle means more wriggle room!

The 101

The 101 is a leather sneaker that builds on the same foundation as the Rev and Streetstyle Slip-on, but with a more elevated design and materials. The leather upper gives it a more polished feel, making it a good option for those who want a higher end sneaker look. It also feel sturdier, is easier to clean, and offers better durability for long term wear. However, it does feel stiffer initially and takes a bit to break in.

While I love the look, I found these to be the least comfortable of the bunch when brand new. The thicker material makes the whole shoe feel narrower so my toes rub on the sides of the shoe. They’ve been breaking in over time and becoming more comfortable, but I still prefer the Rev and Streetstyle.

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium to wide fit: A wide fit that feels a little less roomy than Rev and Streetstyle because the leather is stiffer and thicker.
• High volume: On the high volume side, even with the removable insole inside. But I can cinch the laces to fit.

Runner 1 

The Runner 1 is a transition-style shoe with the thickest sole of all the Splay models and retro vibes. It is less flexible than the other models too, and doesn’t really have any ground feel. But if you are someone who wants zero drop and toe space in an otherwise typical sneaker, they’ll help you on your way to happier feet.

I like them alright myself, but wish the sole was more flexible. I don’t mind the thickness, I just wish it moved with my foot more. And I think the toe box could be a touch wider. But I’d wear them over New Balance sneakers any day!

Running Shoe? Despite its name, I personally wouldn’t use the Runner 1 for running or gym use. The upper is thick and not particularly breathable, and the outsole isn’t as flexible and grippy as I like for gym use. To me, they are a lifestyle shoe.

Sizing & Fot

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width – more toe space than a typical sneaker, but not as roomy as the other models. Best suited for an average width foot.
• Medium to low volume: These have a much closer fit than the other styles and feels a lot more secure on my low volume feet. You can remove the insole for more space.
• Vertical toe space: Runner 1 has a rounded shape with a lot of room above the toes.

Freestyle 2.0

The Freestyle 2.0 is your basic lace up sneaker. They have the thinnest, most flexible sole of any Splay shoe and come with a removable insole. For me the style is nothing special, compared to the other Splay styles, but classic Vans or Keds wearers will appreciate it.

I find the fit on the Freestyle to feel on the narrow side (for a barefoot shoe), because the canvas rubs. I actually feel like I have more room in the Rev and Streetstyle because those models have a lot more vertical space in the toe box. But the outsole is thinner and more flexible than those other models.

The Freestyle sneaker is already going through an update, and will be re-launched this year with a wider toe box and softer feel. I have a feeling I will appreciate this update!

Sizing & Fit

• Mostly true to size: These run slightly small and there are no half sizes, so if in between size up.
• Medium width: IMO these are best suited for average width and not wide or extra wide feet.
• Medium volume: These have an average volume and fit me fine with the insole and laces tightened a bit. Will fit higher volume feet without insole.

Kids Explore

The Kids Explore has the same thin, flexible sole as the Freestyle but a nice roomy toe box for growing toes. They are one of the cheapest kids barefoot shoes available, and come in all kinds of cute colors and prints. We have followed the Explore shoes from Splay ever since they were launched on a crowdfunding platform in 2018 – my son wore those shoes to death! The velcro is easy, they’re affordable, and they don’t squish their toes. Win all around.

Another great thing about the Explore is they are an accessible shoe for kids with mobility limitations.

The only issue we’ve ever had with the Explore is that the canvas can fade and look worn over time. For the price of these shoes, this is not surprising to me. And we were never too concerned about our shoes looking worn, so my boys just kept wearing them!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Extra wide toe box, slim heel and midfoot: This makes for a secure fit without compromising toe space. If your child has a thick foot throughout, the shoes might feel too snug in the middle.
• Medium volume, with adjustable velcro.

Overall, Splay has done a commendable job with their redesigned lineup. However, if you’re a barefoot purist looking for the most minimalistic experience, Splay might not be the best fit for you. That said, for those transitioning to barefoot shoes or seeking an affordable, casual option, Splay is a strong contender.

PaperKrane Neon Low

Ok how fun are these. PaperKrane is an Australian brand that specializes in the wild and wacky. Their rainbow soles have been around for a while now, but previously were too narrow for me. Recently PaperKrane moved to a wider toe box shape, and they now are an excellent fit for me! Woot! This pop of color is just what I need after a long dreary winter.

I love that the rainbow is both unexpected and subtle along the bottom of the shoe. Just enough for a bright splash of fun, without being over the top. The shoe is also really soft and comfy.

My only complaint is that I found the laces difficult to tighten, and the shoe kind of pooched unevenly on my low volume feet when I did. So I tightened just the top portion. They come with a removable insole, and I am wearing mine with the insole.

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size – Mine are a size 37 and they fit as expected, with enough room all around.
• Wide toe box – suitable for average and wide feet, but probably not extra wide.
• Medium to high volume – they come with a removable insole and can be tightened over low volume feet, but I found the laces were kind of hard to pull tighter. Instead I added an additional insole.

Lisbeth Joe Paris

You’re going to be seeing a lot more silver this year, and I am loving it! Lisbeth Joe recently updated their Paris mary janes, and I think they are so cute.

They have a touch more cushion than you typically find on barefoot dress shoes, making them a good option for teachers or those who are on their feet a lot. And the scallop detail on the opening is a nice touch – they look more elevated than a typical mary jane flat.

My main issue with the Paris is they are quite high volume, so they gape on the sides and above my foot. I have a pretty skinny foot, so it wouldn’t be so obvious on a fuller foot. They also make my feet sweat, but that doesn’t bother me personally.

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size – I have a size 6.5 in my Paris, which is typical for me in flats. I sometimes size down to a 6 in dress shoes, but when there is a strap I like 6.5.
• Medium width – they are definitely wider than most shoes, but the toe box is rounded and may not be suitable for those with a wide toe splay. I can feel my toes on the sides slightly.
• High volume – there is some gapping above my low volume foot.

Ohne Project

Ohne project has been around a few years, but I haven’t yet written about them because for a long time they had very low inventory. They are now picking up speed with new models and have lots more to choose from! These sneakers are super cool looking, with fun pops of color. At the time of this writing, many are also on sale (and my code above gets you an extra discount).

Just note that while the sole is flat it is not super flexible, so they have a bit more of a traditional sneaker feel.

Ohne shoes are entirely vegan, with the “leather” upper made of recycled corn waste (not sure what that is…) and organic cotton. Typically I don’t love faux leather, but this material is pleasant and doesn’t look cheap or plasticky.

They have a terry cloth lining, which makes them feel warmer than usual, so they felt too hot for me in summer. I got good use out of them in the fall though and expect to wear them through the spring.

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size – Mine are a size 37, my typical sneaker size. I have just enough room all around my foot.
• Wide fit – These are generous in the toe box, but not quite wide enough for Samantha.
• Medium to low volume – they come with a removable insole and fit on the lower volume side even without the insole. With the insole in they are quite fitted on my shallow feet. So I don’t think these would work well for a high volume foot.

Jenon leather is a great brand for the adventurous barefoot-shoe-wearer, because you can have your shoes custom made in tons of different color options. Our favorites are the Joplin flat and Villet Mary Jane. The Joplin isn’t exactly new (we reviewed them back in 2022), but the Joplin Rock and Villet are recent additions and they have new custom color options.

Above is the regular Joplin, a personal favorite of Samantha’s, who is always on the hunt for beautiful shoes that fit an extra wide foot.

My pair of Villet are in a very neutral tan, but they could be made in whatever color you want for a pop of fun. The Villet is more my style compared to the Joplin. And mary jane flats are very trendy right now!

Dillon Leather

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5 – Men’s 15

The original Dillon in knit has been one of my go to white sneakers the last year and a half. They have a comfortable fit with just enough width and volume over the toes while still looking stylish – but the knit gets dirty easily and I’ve had a hard time keeping them clean! So it’s good news that they are now available in leather because that is so much easier to keep clean.

The Dillon Leather is a classic everyday white sneaker with subtle details and a grippy sole. You can also use them for court sports and light exercise. They feel sturdy but not stiff and Justin and I are fans both of how they look and how they feel.

Sizing & Fit:

• Wide fit – should work both for average and wide feet.
• True to size.
• Medium to high volume, but should work for all volumes because of the laces and removable insole.

Breckenridge

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5-12

The Breckenridge is a classic lace up boot style that toes the line between dressy and casual. The outsole can be used outdoors, but isn’t so rugged looking that you couldn’t wear them with a nicer stylish outfit. They remind me a lot of the old Vivobarefoot Gobi Hi that is no longer available, but with a wider toe box. In fact, this is I think the widest toe box Xero has put on a boot. They feel great to me!

The leather upper on the black color is soft and nice and makes for that leather boot look and feel. But be warned that the grey feels different – I find it plasticky and stiff and I was not a fan. I’m not certain what the brown will be like, but my guess is that it is soft based on the natural looking finish you see in the photos.

Except for the grey colorway, I am a big fan of the Breckenridge!

Sizing & Fit:

• True to size
• Medium to wide fit
• Medium volume – should work for all volumes with laces and a removable insole

I find the fit on them to be pretty solid and likely to fit your average person. The toe box is wide enough for my wide feet, but not likely to work for extra wide feet. And they are semi-fitted through the heel and ankle so I don’t feel like I’m flopping all around.

Ridgeway Chelsea

Leather | Sizes US Women’s 5 – Men’s 15

The Ridgeway Chelsea uses the same rugged outsole as the other Ridgeway models with a classic chelsea leather upper. They are Xero’s take on the Blundstone style of boot that mixes function with fashion. And you certainly could use these boots for hiking, as a light work boot, and as an everyday shoe.

The toe box has good volume over the toes and is wide, but not as wide as the Lems Chelsea if you’re familiar with that one. They are also a little bit stiffer and heavier, but the outsole has better grip and tread.

Both are good boots in my opinion, but I wish the Xero Ridgeway was a smidge wider in the toe box and both Justin and I found the back to be hard and stiff against the achilles. If you are looking for a more rugged chelsea with a robust outsole and upper, this will be your speed. But probably not an ideal choice for people who want that light soft barefoot feel.

Sizing & Fit:

• May run small – they were nearly true to size for me, maybe a quarter size small. But for Justin they were a full size too small. He seldom needs larger than a men’s 13 but will need a 14 in the Ridgeway!!
• Medium wide
• High volume over the toes and midfoot – they come with a removable insole but I needed to add an extra one to fit.

Dillon Slip-on Youth

I love my Dillon Slip-ons, and my kids often want slip-ons of their own like their friends have. So we were both excited when Xero came out with the easy canvas slip-on sneaker that also is at an affordable price point for barefoot kids shoes.

They’re lightweight, cute, and comfortable. We’ve only had them about a month, but so far the canvas has held up to scuffing and the rough and tumble play my son is nearly constantly engaged in. And while they’re on sale the next two weeks they are only $44!

Sizing & Fit:

• Medium to wide width
• Medium to high volume (removable insoles)

My son has wide feet with average volume and these fit him fine without being excessively floppy or tight. He has a bit of extra room and you can remove the factory insole, so they will work for some kids with high volume feet as well. Sizing was true for us.

What I Love

When it comes to peformance, the Motus Flex is possibly the lightest most comfortable exercise shoe I’ve tried. The sole is grippy enough for gym floors and sturdy enough for outdoor exercise, while still being agile and soft. And they are very functional for everyday use and walking. I’ve even been hiking in mine quite a bit, which makes them super dirty but my feet are happy!

I also love that I have only had to adjust the elastic laces once – now every time I wear them I can pull the shoes on and off without having to fiddle with anything.

They have a roomy fit so I added an extra insole to mine for a more precise fit (I have very shallow arches). This made them just the right volume for my feet without having to tighten the laces too much and I have thoroughly enjoyed wearing them all day.

They are very similar to the Wildling Nittugo, but built more stable during dynamic movement and with a more robust outsole. Side note – I don’t love that the Motus Flex sole appears to be a close copy of the unique and innovative Wildling sole, but I do appreciate having something as comfortable that is more durable.

Sizing & Fit:

• Wider than most Vivo’s! Most likely because the stretchy upper and flexible sole adapts to different foot shapes
• Straight cut but still secure on my narrow heels because of the elastic closure
• Medium volume, but adjustable to most volumes (high volume can remove the factory insole)

Other tidbits: I have gotten mine quite dirty a couple of times so I had the chance to see how well they cleaned up. I soaked them in Oxiclean for several hours and then put them in the wash (in a garment bag, cold water, delicate cycle) and they came out pretty good!

Why We Love Barefoot Shoes for Training

Feet are a highly underrated part of our body, and they become especially important when we are physically active. Good form in the gym starts with the feet!

But unfortunately most of the gym shoes on the market don’t let your feet do their job, and consequently throw off the rest of your body. A tapered pointy toe box and an unnecessarily cushioned & heeled sole do not make for natural positioning of the feet.

So we wear barefoot shoes because they don’t interfere with your body’s connection to the ground. We also love the strength, balance, and sensory gains of being totally barefoot, but at times the workout calls for shoes.

So when we are shopping for gym shoes we look specifically for the following:

• A wide toe box so the toes can spread out and support the body
• A thin sole for better stability and proprioception
• Zero drop or a totally flat sole for neutral alignment

These features make for a shoe that lets your feet function at full capacity in the gym!

The Best Barefoot Gym Shoes

I’ve joined forces with my friend Megan, who is a physical therapist and gym enthusiast. Together we tested all the barefoot gym shoes on the market to determine which ones have the best grip, functionality, durability, and of course a good fit for healthy feet.

There are our favorite options that are as close to the barefoot experience as possible while giving your foot the protection it needs, whatever your preferred form of exercise is.

This article is about gym trainers, not lifters, which are especially made for a specific type of weightlifting – Olympic lifting. If you would like a wide toe box alternative to your standard Olympic lifter, check out this option from TYR.

Now on to the best barefoot training shoes!

Xero Forza

Sizes US Women’s 5 – Men’s 15 | Available from:

Best for: All gym & court workouts

This model ended up being the favorite for both of us because they were the most versatile for lifting/static exercises AND dynamic cardio workouts. And they are just dang comfy while being super secure to the foot! They have that perfect balance of being soft and flexible while still providing the right amount of grip and protection.

We love that you get both the lace adjustment and the strap adjustment to really fine tune the fit. That velcro stability strap provides a lot of security the whole length of the shoe, so we found that they work both on my really low volume foot and Megan’s high volume foot.

Cons: The uppers on the Forza are not reinforced so won’t be as durable as some of the other trainers we tested, especially for rope climbs. But because we love how soft they are, it’s a fair trade in our opinion (increased comfort, a little less durability).

And second, if it were up to us they would have more room in the toe box. Even though the soft upper is stretchy and forgiving, these are not ideal for people with a really wide toe splay. But because they are so secure you can size up for more room!

Men’s Xero shoes are wider than women’s, so I recommend ordering based on your foot width (since otherwise the shoe is the same).

Vivobarefoot Motus Strength

The Vivobarefoot Motus Strength is especially designed with a grippy, flat outsole for stability on the gym floor. They are a little more cushioned than other Vivobarefoot models for a bit of extra protection in high impact workouts. The quality is great, and we expect them to be really durable over time and with heavy use on gym floors.

The Motus Strength shoe can easily be worn for all gym exercise, but are just a tiny bit stiffer in parts of the shoe than the Xero Forza. Though we do expect them to get more and more comfortable over time (as has been the case with all my other pairs of Vivo shoes). If you want something like the Motus Strength but that is a lot more minimal check out the Motus Flex which as good grip with a soft knit upper.

One bonus about the Vivobarefoot Motus Strength is that they look more like a regular sneaker than most of the barefoot trainer options, so they can easily be worn straight from the gym to the town. This is a big plus if you’d rather not buy a different pair of shoes for every activity.

Cons: The stitching on the inside was a little irritating without socks, but with socks was not noticeable.

And we’d love them to be just a teensy bit more flexible for dynamic workouts and quick direction changes. However, they seem to be more durable than the Xero Forza with a higher walled rubber sole for protection against hard equipment, so again always a trade off.

Like Xero Shoes, Vivobarefoot men’s are wider than women’s otherwise no different. So order based on your foot type.

They fit Megan’s high volume feet well, but bunched a little bit on my low volume feet – more of an aesthetic issue than a fit issue!

TYR DropZero

Best for: Lifting & static exercise

If you need a shoe for lifting only, the TYR DropZero trainer is the best of the bunch. The quality is excellent, they are durable with reinforcements at high pressure points, have a grippy sole, and are breathable thanks to a soft knitted upper.

The two velcro adjustments make for an ultra secure fit without any pinch points or rubbing. We also found the toe box to be a good width, wider than both Vivo and Xero. I consider this shoe to be the best made of all in this list! And the one we recommend for serious lifters who want a shoe that lasts.

Cons: There is just one thing we would change to make them more versatile as a gym trainer, and that is a bit more flexibility in the sole for quick movements. The outsole is bendy, but not as flexible as we would like in all directions, so they don’t move as dynamically with the foot for full body cardio exercise like HIIT & CrossFit.

But they have gotten more flexible over time and certainly can be used as an all purpose gym trainer. It’s just that they’re not our top pick for those exercise modalities!

Bearfoot Shoes Ursus

The Bearfoot Ursus is a really soft comfortable shoe with no pinch points anywhere. We hardly notice we’re wearing them, which is the goal of a barefoot shoe! These are especially good for Megan, who has a wide high volume foot -they offer a whole lot of room in the toe box.

Despite the fact that the Bearfoot Ursus is soft, it still is durable and abrasion resistant. And the high top version can be useful to bring awareness to the ankle if you are in need of that.

Cons: The canvas does get dirty easily (they’ll need to be washed occasionally), and we found them better for lifting or casual wear than for dynamic sports – because they aren’t as responsive to quick movements.

I would also add, from a fit perspective, that the toe box is a little shallow over the toes, so if you are someone with “tall toes” or upward pointing nails they might feel tight.

Bearfoot Shoes also has a grip toe sock that you can use in the gym too. It doesn’t offer any protection against equipment, but are a nice alternative if you want to lift barefoot but aren’t allowed to.

Notorious Lift Radix

Best for: All gym exercise

Notorious Lift shoes are like a classic gym shoe but with more grip for stability while lifting (and of course a wide toe box and flat sole). These shoes cross over well to the more dynamic exercise modalities because they are very soft, flexible, and move with the foot.

They performed well for us as an all purpose trainer and are really comfortable!

Cons: We wish there was a stability strap for better security on the whole length of the foot. This will be especially noticeable in people with lower volume feet. BUT the Notorious Sumo Sole lifters were updated with a wide toe box sometime after I first wrote this review, and they have stability straps that likely will make for a more secure fit on lower volume feet.

I found these too roomy on my low volume feet and needed to add an extra insole to get a good secure fit. This is fine for high impact sports when I want some extra protection, but specifically for lifting I don’t want extra padding because it makes it harder to stabilize my foot. So if you have low volume feet and want to use these weightlifting, I’d go for another model here.

Vibram Five Fingers V-Train

Best for: Crossfit & all gym exercise

Vibram Five Fingers offer full toe articulation and awareness in the feet. Back in the day they were Megan’s go to for minimalistic shoes! The V-Train is specifically designed as a gym trainer so that’s the model we tested out, but they have others that work well as a gym shoe.

The V-Train has some padding on the balls of the feet which is good for high impact exercise and running on pavement. They are also flexible enough to allow natural foot patterning. The arch area is reinforced with hard lugs for rope climbs, which is good for durability but it does make them less flexible and open.

Cons: Really snug in the midfoot due to the firm rope traction lugs in the arch, so this particular model didn’t work for Megan’s wide, high volume feet.

If you like the idea of five finger shoes but want something without the firm arch reinforcement, I would suggest the KMD Sport LS or the KSO EVO. These are both designed for indoor gym use but without the rope lugs and should still give you a real barefoot feeling with the grip you need.

Lono Flow

The Lono Flow is a really flexible and soft shoe that has a secure fit because of the lacing. I’ve been enjoying the Flow the last year and a half as a lifestyle shoe because the fit is so good and they’re just dang comfy. But they also work well as a gym shoe!

The Flow S has a tighter knit for even more security, but both have a grippy outsole that works well for a variety of sports. They also both have a reinforced toe guard.

Cons: The upper is so light and soft that they don’t offer a ton of protection.

Tolos

Best for: Weightlifting

Tolos sneakers are very minimal and lightweight. We found them to be best for weightlifting when you are mostly static and not pounding the concrete. They have very minimal cushioning, so might not have enough foot protection for high impact exercise and sports.

But because they aren’t over-designed with a bunch of fancy doo dads, you are able to easily take them from the gym to just about anywhere. They are a good balance of function with minimalism. And you can add an extra insole if you want a little more cushion for running or jumping.

Cons: If you have a low volume foot it’s difficult to cinch the laces tight enough for a good fit. And they aren’t as secure throughout the whole foot as we’d prefer for dynamic exercise that involves quick movements.

Affordable Barefoot Gym Trainers

If you are looking for an affordable barefoot gym shoe to test the waters in, I recommend the following brands.

Whitin Shoes

Whitin has a variety of sneakers and trainers with a wide toe box and flexible sole. They’re basic, but do the job! And I like that they have mainstream looking styles if you want a classic sneaker look in the gym.

I recommend choosing shoes either from the “Wide Barefoot” section of their shop, or the style above right with the 5 nubs (like toes). And they run on the smaller side, so many people size up.

This brand ships from Amazon, which can be convenient if you are unsure about your size and want to be able to easily return.

Saguaro Smart

The Saguaro Smart has a mesh upper that is soft and breathable. They run a little bit small, so many people size up a half or whole size. The width is generous, and they’re a pretty solid shoe! Not as durable as the others we’ve reviewed here, but that is to be expected at this price. And they are genuinely very comfortable.

Saguaro has other barefoot shoes that can be used as gym shoes, but this one if my favorite.

The most important thing to note is that Saguaro ships from Asia, so can take a little while to arrive depending on where you are ordering from.

The Lems Primal 3 is out now! Lems Shoes makes excellent shoes for people who crave comfort and want to be kinder to their feet.

Check out my review of them in the video above for the highlights, and below I’ll share a few additional details.

Lems Primal 3 Review

These sneakers have a universal fit that works for most foot types, and is an all-around excellent shoe for people who want total comfort.

Especially for those who don’t want an ultra thin sole, spend a lot of time on their feet on hard surfaces, and/or are recovering from any kind of foot pain, the Primal 3 is a good option with a bit of cushion.

Justin loves his moderately cushioned barefoot shoes, and he has been wearing his Primal 3s to play volleyball, on long travel days, and for everyday walking the last few months. He was a long time Primal 2 fan, but has happily made the switch to the Primal 3.

Comparison to Primal 2

If you are a Primal 2 fan, you’ll want to know the biggest differences between 2 and 3. Let’s go through them one by one.

Wider outsole

The toe box is the same shape and width, but the midfoot and heel are wider. This is good for people who were spilling over the middle of the shoe in the Primal 2s.

But I did notice that the wider heel adds some lateral stability to the shoe. This will be nice for some people, but I personally prefer a slimmer heel with rounded sides (no lateral stability) for a more barefoot feel.

Thicker, More Durable Sole

The Primal 3 is a few millimeters thicker than the Primal 2 and is a little more structured. This makes for more durability and stability in the shoe – they should last longer and won’t twist around the foot or deform as it breaks in. This is great news for people who want a shoe that can take more of a beating.

But it does mean less ground feel and flexibility in all directions, so if you were a Primal 2 fan, that is important to note.

Half Sizes

Fit is important in shoes for your foot health, and having half sizes makes it easier to fine tune things. This increase in the size range should make you in-betweeners very happy!

Primal Eco

The Primal Eco is another new model coming soon from Lems this spring that is very similar to the Primal 3 but is made of 50% recycled materials for a more sustainable shoe.

The fit in the Eco is a little bit snugger in the upper because the material isn’t as soft and stretchy, which actually fits me a little better than the Primal 3. I have really low volume feet, so I love when a shoe fits nice and close around my midfoot.

Besides this fit difference and a slightly different design, the Primal Eco is made on the same shoe mold as the Primal 3 and overall is very similar.

Primal Zen

The Primal Zen from Lems is another similar sneaker. It’s made on a slightly different shoe last, but the fit feels pretty similar. However if you have a wide midfoot, you will probably be more comfortable in the Primal 3 and Primal Eco.

I love all 3 (and all 3 are excellent for toe freedom and comfort), but out of all of Lem’s wide toe box sneakers my favorite is still the Primal Zen.

The Primal 3 is spacious and durable

Ultimately, the Lems Primal 3 is going to be excellent for people who want lots of space for their feet and a more durable, functional shoe.

Xero Shoes Spring 2024 Review

This is usually a good time to shop with Xero, because the 20% off makes for good prices. So if you are looking for some staple barefoot shoes to add to your wardrobe this spring, there are some nice ones to choose from.

You can read my earlier Xero Shoes reviews for more context on this brand and reviews of other models.

Dillon Canvas Slip-on

This is the new Xero model I’m most excited about! The Dillon slip-on looks cool, is affordable compared to many other barefoot shoes (especially during the launch sale), and the fit is pretty darn good. I have enough space for my toes, but the shoe isn’t flopping all over!

I think they’re a great entry point barefoot shoe, for people who don’t want to stick out but want to give wide toe box shoes a go. I’ve been reaching for mine often because they match almost everything in my closet and of course are easy to slip on and go.

Justin has also been enjoying his for the same reasons. Both of us love the style and the fit.

The lace up version of the Dillon was released last year with a similar fit and they were an instant favorite for me and many of you as well. Seeing Xero make shoes with more width in the toe box and a closer fit through the midfoot and heel is super exciting to me, because it makes for a more universal fit.

Kona Slip-Ons

The Kona was first released in men’s sizes last year, but now is available in women’s. As you know, I love a good slip-on and these ones are also a good price.

They fit me well, but are higher volume than the Dillon Slip-ons so I needed to tie a knot into the elastic to tighten them. If you like Hey Dudes, they have a similar look but with a barefoot sole.

Even though they are comfortable, the style isn’t my favorite (not vibing with the orange accents). They’re perfect as a house shoe or mail-run-school-drop-off-take-out-the-trash shoe, but I much prefer the aesthetic of my Dillon Slip-Ons so wear those more often.

H-Trail Sandals

The H-Trail is a great flip flop replacement with multiple adjustment points. I like this style of all-purpose summer sandal. You can slip them on for walks and errands, take them to the beach or lake, wear them in the gym locker room.

My only issue with them is that there is only a little bit of velcro on the outside and heel straps. I have low volume feet and I’m not able to tighten them enough to fit securely, because there just isn’t enough strap. In general they seem to better suited for higher volume feet and weren’t a great fit for me. This has been true for every thong strap Xero sandal I’ve tried! So I stick with the Z Trek and Z Trail from Xero.

Scrambler Mid II Hiking Boot

The Scrambler Mid II is a light hiking boot that works well for casual hikes and longer more intense hikes. The Michelin outsole is grippy and flexible (it gets more and more so over time) and the lacing pattern is really easy to tighten and adjust to a perfect fit.

I find Xero’s hiking shoes to be a bit hit or miss when it comes to the toe box width – sometimes they are narrow fitting and don’t work for me other times they are perfect. And I LOVE the original Scrambler Mid and Scrambler Low, so I was a little hesitant to hear they were coming out with a second version.

The outsole is the same as before, but the upper on the new version is no longer meshy. This is good if you are concerned about water coming in, but I love the breathable stretchy feel of the original upper! And it does take away a little bit of the width that I loved in the original.

While the Scrambler Mid II still has a generous fit, they are just a little less roomy in the toe box and I miss that space. The good news is that there is still a lot of original Scrambler Mid inventory, so if you don’t mind the airy mesh upper you can purchase that one for a while yet.

Ultimately both are good, comfortable shoes that perform well.

Scrambler Mid Waterproof Hiking Boot

This is the waterproof version of the Scrambler Mid. Whenever you make a shoe with a waterproof lining you lose some flexibility, so this model fits a little snugger overall than the non-waterproof version. Otherwise, it’s very similar with the same outsole and overall design.

Ridgeway Mesh Low Hiking Shoe

Last fall Xero came out with the Ridgeway Mid, which I really enjoyed. And I am liking the Ridgeway Mesh Low even more. The sole is fairly cushioned, so barefoot purists might not want to go for this one.

But the uppers are more flexible than the Ridgeway Mid and if you are doing ultra hiking or want a little bit more padding under foot these will do the job. I also found the width to be generous and my toes had plenty of space!

I found last fall that the Ridgeway outsole is not as grippy on slick surfaces as the Scrambler’s Michelin sole. I didn’t get a chance to confirm that again this spring, because it’s been dry with only one really rainy day (and the earth sucked it right up so it wasn’t slick). All I can say this time is that the soles have been performing great for me this spring in dry weather!
